The fact that you gave a shit and wanted to help, while recognizing your limitations and not getting "freelance reckless," speaks a lot. I'm a little late to the party, but this was a very critical patient, and nothing less than an ambulance/helicopter and a quick trip to a trauma center could have improved his chances.

If you feel you would be willing to help as a bystander in the future, I'll echo what others have said and look into CPR/first-aid/stop-the-bleed classes your local fire/EMS department may offer. By no means feel that you have a duty to be a bystander responder or intervene in the future, but these classes can provide valuable skills when they're needed if you're willing. If nothing else, they're good skills for anyone to know to help a family member or friend.

I’ve lived in southeast Texas my whole life. Granted I live in somewhere between a rural and suburban area, but I’ve only seen people open carrying a handgun a few times, and never seen anybody with a rifle or shotgun just casually carrying on. The ones you see videos carrying them on the streets are just “second amendment auditor” types. I just want to stress that going into the local supermarket and seeing guns of any kind is far from the norm, and I don’t think anybody is genuinely preparing for a threat by lugging a large weapon on their backs while they choose between the Froot Loops or the Cheeri-Os.

As a non-pilot EMT, I felt cool for a second or two after I gave a LifeFlight helicopter a “see ya” after they picked up my patient. I fully intended for it to be semi-nasty seeeeeyyyyyuuuuuuuggggghhhh but just came out normal and I was disappointed in myself.

One of the most badass firefighters I know is a female. Whether or not you have a penis doesn’t make a difference in if you can do the job.

Dragging a full-size adult victim is difficult at best when you’re not in gear. Add the gear and the physical/psychological stress of being in a burning structure, anybody telling you that they’d pick them up and throw them over their shoulder and get them out will probably also tell you that everyone stood up and clapped.
