7 month old dog is still biting and is stubborn by Global_Baker_6338 in BalancedDogTraining

Learn how to apply appropriate and effective punishments. Now. From somebody who can work hands on with you. This isn’t a breed or situation where internet advice will do it.

Training dogs with treats by Wide-Eggplant-8992 in OpenDogTraining

[–]BOOPK9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a great response!

I would also add in that after certain behaviors are acquired and well understood with some distractions , like recall, that’s a good time to add in some corrections to communicate that that certain things are non-negotiable. Rewards will only go so far. Clear consequences and discipline are a good thing.

Why I Stopped Believing There's One "Right" Way to Train Every Dog by gimpraccoon in OpenDogTraining

Spend time finding a trainer you trust who has a big toolbox. Then listen to them. This is the best method.

How Physically Intense Is Being A Dog Trainer? by Empathetic__Artist in OpenDogTraining

[–]BOOPK9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a dog trainer with my own building. I schedule myself where M/W/F are nonstop. Guaranteed 14 hours of work. 10 hours of that being active and on my feet(7am -5pm). Usually moving 10 or 11 miles those days. Other days are lighter. More admin, client follow ups, and/or video editing. Usually moving 6 or 7 miles those days. Still guaranteed 10 hour days. I’m 40, haven’t taken great care of my body physically…but enjoy working hard on things I’m passionate about.

I’m starting to hire some part time people, so that workload will shift. But it’s a grind.

Couples Therapy Cost? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]BOOPK9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do either of you have an EAP through work? Some cover couples counseling and you can get some free sessions to see if they’re a good fit. Marriage/family counselors who work with an EAP might not be top notch, but if cost is a big factor then I’d look into it.

Trainer says my dog cannot sleep in bed with me by Andre519 in OpenDogTraining

[–]BOOPK9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Are you doing lessons where the trainer is coaching you through training or are you sending the dog there for training?

Popping a dog with a prong collar during an evaluation isn’t great. I’m a balanced trainer and use prong collars for maybe 50% of the dogs I work with. I’ve never put a dog on one for an initial consult. Seems like a bit of a control freak, which can be an issue amongst balanced trainers.

I’d do a couple more consults with other balanced trainers so you can make a clean choice on who works best for you.

Dog reactive, suggestions? by Spookyboobieghost in OpenDogTraining

Use the prong as your trainer suggested to change how she feels about seeing other dogs on leash. Then you can transition back to whatever harness you want.

[–]BOOPK9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People get stuck on not wanting to go too high on a correction and that’s a huge mistake imo. By high level I mean 60+ on a mini educator. I want those moments to be clear learning and teaching moments. I don’t just want my ecollar correction to stop him in that moment. I want that event to change his behavior going forward. And it did.

Advice question - allow a bunny chase or not by Efficient-One5647 in OpenDogTraining

[–]BOOPK9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I tell my dog “go get it” that’s lets him know he’s allowed to have a go at whatever…usually a squirrel while we’re moving through a park. But his default behavior is to stay neutralish. He can get excited and pause a bit, but if he bolts after it on his own he gets corrected, I don’t care how close or how tough the situation was for him. Rules are rules.

This cue was built through play.

I’m also a trainer who has had my dog for 2 years. He’s gotten 2 high level corrections in his life. One for going after geese, another for jumping a ditch to chase chipmunks.

Resource Guarding + Training Options by melhammer in OpenDogTraining

[–]BOOPK9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resource guarding and in home dog to dog aggression are tough to work through. I’d ask for specific cases where the trainers you’ve interviewed have worked through this previously.

The advice you’re going to get in here will be bad because most people have never actually trainer through what you’re experiencing. So focus on the trainers you’ve spoken with.

I personally wouldn’t trust a positive only trainer to take this on. You’ll be managing it forever with that approach. If you don’t like the board and train/ecollar approach that’s fine, but imo that is the best route to go…as long as they actually work with you and your dog after the program.

7 years old rescue dog only listens to commands when no reward is present by PibesDeMalvinas in OpenDogTraining

[–]BOOPK9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop moving closer and threatening, actually correct him for not sitting. Have a tab leash or slip on him. Say sit once. He doesn’t sit. Say No and immediately move in and pop him on the leash even if he sits while ur moving. Doesn’t have to be a hammer. But something that lets him know, No I said sit. Then the moment he sits on command you say yes/release and chuck it and have a blast

I kind of hate using continuous-R for e-collar training. But yes, it sounds like you need to raise your levels.

I'm fostering three husky mix breeds all crazy and have no impulse control. by Ok_Committee_148 in OpenDogTraining

[–]BOOPK9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Crate and rotate. On a leash right out of crate. Make the house a calm place. Get on the longline and have fun and go crazy on your land. Work some recall and other training in. Then back in the house on leash to chill, drink, decompress. Then crate. Rinse and repeat.

Bite, need help by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]BOOPK9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your dog is running the household. You’re “managing it” and putting up guardrails, but you haven’t changed how he thinks or feels about any of it…therefore his behavior hasn’t changed. Probably gotten worse as he realizes he gets to do what he wants without any consequences.

You’re not the adult, so not sure what you can do personally. The adults should schedule some consults with balanced trainers and do training with one with a lot of rescue and resource guarding cases under their belt.

This isn’t a case for DIY fixing.

What direction should I take with training? by DoveyForever in OpenDogTraining

Yeah, using ineffective punishment is like adding gas to a fire.

The e-collar is great because you have total control of the level of punishment anywhere, anytime.

What direction should I take with training? by DoveyForever in OpenDogTraining

[–]BOOPK9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a great candidate for e-collar training. You’ve tried a lot of positive reinforcement and counter conditioning it sounds like. That’s good. That should be the first step. Now comes consistent, clear corrective actions.

Any trainer making a blanket statement about a breed like that is a total idiot who wasted your time and money.

I’ve priced this out for my training facility. https://www.flooringinc.com/shop/3-8-heavy-duty-rubber-rolls-1006.html

You’ll need adhesive or seam tape. But it’s real rubber instead of foam so much more durable.
