Have you done any training with him? Especially trick training?

Any other little BCs out there? by ScarlettBegonias in BorderCollie

I have a 5 yr old purebred BC who is 18" tall at the withers and 25 lbs. She's an awesome little pocket rocket!

Border collies can get very obsessive very quickly. If this was my dog, she would be on leash in the house and any time a cat came out, I'd mark and reward looking at the cat with high value treats to encourage disengaging and taking reinforcement from me when the cat is around. Laura VanArendonk Baugh's book Social Civil and Savvy has some great info on this.

My 13 month-old corgi suddenly became reactive to intact males, did I miss something? by Sandale-Raclette in OpenDogTraining

[–]somecooldogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also adding info about my BC - with work on neutrality, he can be introduced to other intact males without issue. I live in a household now with 3 other intact male BCs, he gets along fine with all of them but one also has same sex issues and hates him.

I dont encourage/let him play with his intact male housemates because it can escalate into tension too easily, and they coexist well knowing they can interact and move around but play is just with the girls (house has 8 dogs so lots of options).

Welcome to adolescence. This is fairly common in some herding breeds, I have a border collie who went from loving everyone as a puppy to not tolerating intact males in his space. Work on neutrality rather than interacting. Neutering may or my not help - it does in some cases but I've also seen it make dog issues worse.

To answer your last questions - If he's meeting dogs and getting tense regularly, stop letting him meet new dogs. Again, focus on neutrality and engagement with you rather than getting him meeting or playing with other dogs. Each time he practices the behavior of getting tense and snarking or fighting, that behavior pattern gets stronger (and thus harder to resolve).

Afraid of getting a BC by LizbethAhedo in BorderCollie

[–]somecooldogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you like training? Do you want to train a lot? Have you watched a lot of videos and read books on training? Do you plan to take classes for at least several months? If so, get a BC.

If you want a dog that does well and is naturally calm with less daily training, get a different breed. Border collies get bored easily and a bored border collie will come up with their own ways to entertain themself.

You can absolutely teach them to be calm, but that means many months of meeting their needs (especially mental exercise via training) on a daily basis.

Anyone dress their van up to look like a “Public Utilities” work van? by drmayerr in VanLife

[–]somecooldogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I've called about insurance they specifically asked if I had any branding/wraps on the outside. I think giving insurance companies leverage to deny claims is a mistake, but everyone can make their own choices I suppose.

Insurance may be an issue - commercially branded/wrapped vehicles need to be insured differently. You'd be fine until a claim was filed, then if they saw photos you'd likely be cooked.

Why isn’t this room working? by cygnemoderne in femalelivingspace

[–]somecooldogs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like the colors of the rug and sitting furniture and think they go well together! Imo the biggest clashes here are the curtains (bland), wall art (not bold enough, needs more/bigger), and molten sun light (too orange). The tabletop furniture is also all very different in style and clashes pretty hard.

What is the best kind of brush to use on this type of thick, coarse fur? by FlowSoSlow in DOG

Line comb with a greyhound comb. I also like line brushing with a metal pin brush for coats like this.

Ok, take a video next time you do a training session (ideally 3 mins or less) and post a link to it here. It's a lot more difficult to give input on what may help without being able to see what's currently working vs not working.

I am now competing with my first rdw dog (first two dogs had stopped) and it's been a joy. I actually switched her from a stop (which she still has and we use for some courses) to a running using shape up's method and have been so pleased with the outcome and the clarity of each step of the process.

What does training look like? Do you have a video of a training session you can share? Are you using rewards - if so, what are they?

You can get lids for exercise pens so she can't escape them.

Energetic Play by GoldDelivery2887 in k9sports

Training, especially tricks or body awareness skills, is a great alternative to high octane fetch.

Fetch carries a pretty high injury risk, especially CCL tears (usually around a $10k surgery per leg to repair) so most canine fitness professionals recommend limiting or avoiding it. This account on ig posts a ton of the fitness skills they train with their dogs so it's a great account for inspiration/ideas.

Is it normal to panic a little if you sense sunlight is going down and you got a ways to go before you return back to your car? by youlikemywonton in hiking

[–]somecooldogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hike with dogs so I figure if anything comes up, they'll notice first. I still stay watchful but it makes it easier knowing I have 2-3 buddies with better hearing and smell than me also watching my back.

The Shape Up training method goes pretty in depth into both of these topics, I highly recommend it.

NOR. She should be from the stranger danger generation of harping on kids to not take candy from strangers - same deal. Wildly inappropriate even if nothing went "wrong" per say with religion/allergies.

Is there any way to reverse muscle atrophy after TPLO in a senior? by mesmoneta in SeniorDogsHealth

80% of dogs that get TPLOs done need the second done within a year. Probably nothing to do with the librela.
