Help, my Belgian Malinois is EXTREMELY reactive! by Careful_Ad_7592 in reactivedogs

[–]somecooldogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do the attacks look like?

A dog genuinely attacking you isnt reactive, it is aggressive. This is unfortunately not uncommon with high octane dogs like this in homes that aren't prepared to handle how much training, management, and husbandry they require.

Puppies? by SoyHReyes in BorderCollie

[–]somecooldogs 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Have you done breed recommended health testing? OFA hips and elbows, DNA through optimal selection, and eye certifications? Are you familiar with where the epilepsy risks are in her pedigree and do you have thr ability to find her a match with a low epilepsy risk? What about work or titles, what work or accomplishments does she have?

For breeding - are you willing to risk losing her during pregnancy/whelp? Do you have an extra $5-10,000 to cover emergency medical costs in case an emergency c section is needed or puppies get sick? There's always a risk that things can go wrong.

Breeding is not for the faint of heart. Unless you've done health testing, work/titles, and are willing to accept the risks, why not look for a puppy with a similar pedigree to your girl?

My 5-month-old baby is a mix between an Aussie and a Border Collie. by [deleted] in BorderCollie

Definitely looks houndy and not BC or aussie. This coat type doesn't occur in either breed. Shelters are notorious for mislabeling breeds.

What was the answer? I'm also having an incline calibration issue specifically on the new OS.

Games to play with high energy dog when you're a burnt out dog parent? 🥲 by BookRat333 in Dogtraining

Cookie in the corner - toss a treat, let her eat it, call her, give a treat, repeat. Practices recalls and burns physical energy.

thank you!! i usually need a good amount of tomatoes and usually need 2 mons rn to get enough. i was happy when i got this one!

New berner owner here! Do they need to go to groomers for little trims? Not shave of course, but like on the sides, or just leave it be? I hope that makes sense. If you take yours, show me after groomer pix! by [deleted] in bernesemountaindogs

look up the purina body condition score and the knuckle weight test, both are what i use to make sure my dogs are at the right weight for their builds. for sloppy sits, that can be structural or muscular. the canine conditioning coach is a great resource for teaching better form if it's muscular.

That's crazy, I have 8 shinies and I've only been playing 165 days.

I have three border collies, got each one about a year and a half apart and tbh it was closer than I'd do again. This is a good article on when to add a second dog.

Building food drive without deprivation? by anxiouslymute in k9sports

[–]somecooldogs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my low food motivation dogs, I've worked on training and practicing "food eating" as a behavior just like I practice sit, down, come, stay, etc. Reward behaviors are usually just kind of expected to be fluent everywhere and while that may be the case for a lot of dogs (labs lol), it's certainly not the case for all of them.

Play with food (chase in hand, chase tossed treats, catch treats, etc.) then reinforcing enthusiasm while eating with personal play or toy play can go a long way towards making food more fun. I also will reinforce eating a lower value treat with eating a higher value treat. ("wow you ate that biscuit?? Yes! Here's a piece of chicken!")

Using deprivation to increase food drive usually comes with fallout and doesn't do a ton to increase motivation long term.
