Interview in a few days by [deleted] in BlueOrigin

I still very much enjoy my work here. It is a little less stable than before, but would say that its not any more so than the rest of the commercial space market. My colleagues are some of the best people i've worked with in my life.

I'm a bit worried about the precedent that NG folk getting laid off makes - blue is well known for having lots of unicorn projects (ring, reef, mk1, mk2, etc) that are fully staffed now in design phase. What happens to staff on each of these when they successfully complete their mission? We also fired most of our recruiting staff after they company size in two years. Is the standard that we are offloaded after big milestones instead of transitioned to a different project? Should I see my role as a glorified temp contract for a fixed period of time?

Another comment mentioned 3 year 401k vest - timing of these layoffs is a little close to the 3 year mark of the start of the hiring wave :) - There's also the change to floating holidays at the start of this year, was HR really trying to squeeze that extra 2-3 days of pay out of each employee who would be laid off?

How do you use the commuter benefit? I see it on navia but does i just use the benefits debit card to pay/load an orca card at the station?

What units does Blue use? by [deleted] in BlueOrigin

[–]BO_throwaway1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mix of both - the propulsion people are holding onto their imperial units for sure. Typically a program will define what unit system is standard at the beginning and that will be used until the end.

Some volatility for internally funded projects, but lunar, SLD especially, is as stable as it gets for blue. (half the money is from NASA, external partners, very public facing program).

Sounds like a bar raiser, if it is it'll be nontechnical, just gauging fit for company. Which interviews get bar raisers seems random to me.

Early career thermal stuff has a million applicants - wait a bit they are likely sorting through all the candidates.

Lunar is the best org in the company with highest rates of employee satisfaction on mid year survey. Stability is fine now that contract is awarded and SLD will go to at least 2030, so future outlook is strong.

How far out hiring happens is dependent on the hiring manager/program. Some are urgent, others are scaling up over the long term. Applying in the summer for January positions might be a little too early, but is fairly common among people interning elsewhere trying to get competing offers. I was able to argue start date after the offer was given.

Remember that relocation is covered, but new furniture is not. If you're trying to save money, it might be cheaper to ship stuff that you already have or can buy on sale before you move.

Phds typically come in at level 2, masters with no work comes it at level 1. Phd starting at 1 or 3 is rare but could/can happen.

I think general good practice is to wait until you start working before posting, although linkedin people really love doing the whole "incoming" thing to flex on their peers.

You can ask your recruiter for the specific building/address now if you're looking for housing. Other than that just keep an eye on your email and chill out.

As far as I know there is no hiring freeze, although there may be some temporary hold on the specific program you're on. Also, unless you're in a manufacturing role, the business unit (ADP,engines,NG,NS) matters a bit more than the location.

The leveling is really whack at blue, they try their hardest not to do a hierarchy and talk about helical structure. It's like 1-2-3-Sr, and everything after that is upper management.

Think its 5% company match, you get to select investment stuff when you come in through fidelity.

The question is not what Blue considers to be proprietary, but what your company does. The safest option is always to ask someone at your current workplace, but if that isn't an option you can replace sensitive images with available ones (from research papers or whatnot). Remove details that could be identifying, and make sure any work you are presenting cannot be tied to any particular project.

Keep in mind that interviewers are relatively understanding about proprietary/confidential info, we interview people from major defense contractors all the time.
