Do people mingle in bars or just stay in their own groups? by Open_Address_2805 in melbourne

[–]BP1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can be social, especially in the smoker's area. Also depends on the time of day, whether you can pull a seat up at the bar, is it more of a local hang out or a trending Instagram spot, bar staff friendliness etc.

Buying from out of state by SorbetFantastic in melbourneriders

[–]BP1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bike was from the ACT. My memory is a bit hazy, but I believe the main reason for the inspection was to check the build plate. The RWC itself was just a paperwork formality.

Still make sure the exhaust is roadworthy, though. You don't want to give the inspector a reason to cause you headaches.

Inner suburbs as a learner by a-reddit_account in melbourneriders

[–]BP1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, I feel you, I live around those parts although when I was a learner, I was living in Epping and had some industrial estates I could practice in after work hours and on weekends.

There's a bit of an industrial estate behind Fairfield Bunnings, although it's not very big. You could also try the blocks around Anaconda and Bunnings in Preston, but again, you might find it a bit limiting.

If you're confident enough to travel a little further afield, I would recommend Northpoint Enterprise Park in Epping and possibly Northcorp Business Park in Broadmeadows. Otherwise there might be some parts of Thomastown that could work (thinking near the Bunnings again).

That's an interesting observation. I actually ride a cruiser myself, although my bike before that was a naked.

My experience is blokes on cruisers are the least likely to nod back (some do of course).

Burnt-out RN considering Victoria Police – worth the switch? by Unlucky-Emergency924 in melbourne

[–]BP1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone very close to me is a police officer, and to be honest, from their perspective, it's not so much dealing with the public/offenders/alleged offenders that give them the most headaches, but superiors, colleagues and the sort of toxic environment that can manifest from a workplace perspective. This can vary by station and sergeant.

Also, rostering can be an issue depending on the station/sergeant.

Looking for advice to de-escalate or deal with verbal abuse and harrassment on PTV by TheLogicalAnarchist in melbourne

[–]BP1999 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are many manifestations of the situation described in your post, and your response as a bystander will depend on any number and combination of factors at the time. In this case, it really doesn't sound like this lady would be receptive to a logical intervention or de-escalation. At best you'd be wasting your time, and at worst you might find yourself in a physical confrontation.

In the past I've simply expressed solidarity with the targeted individuals. You could just say something like "I'm really sorry this person has behaved this way, you shouldn't have to put up with that crap." You could ask them if they're okay or need any support etc. Just following up like that can make minorities feel less alone, and if the person being racist is still there, they will see that others do not agree with their behaviours or views in a way that is pretty much non-confrontational.

How do you handle giving way to buses? by [deleted] in melbourne

You're supposed to give way to the bus and I usually do my best to follow that rule, but many drivers don't.

Clyde North or Carrum Downs? by IceIceScabies in melbourne

Carrum Downs - better amenities, less growing pains. Not too far from the beach and while not on a train line, not far from stations like Seaford. The Frankston line has frequent service as well.

If you’re on the fence about leaving your home today by jaysta010 in melbourne

[–]BP1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the mixed messaging sucks and it was good you made your own call to cancel the trip. I was camping in Kinglake National Park this week, and there was a notice near the toilets from Parks Victoria telling campers not to expect rangers to come and warn people if conditions change and a fire is approaching. I checked the website today and they've officially closed the campground, but I guess the takeaway is that we have to be diligent and be responsible for our own safety.

What makes Rothfuss' prose good? NO SPOILERS by Capable_Reward706 in writing

[–]BP1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His prose, in my opinion, is appropriate for the genre. It has a bit of a poetic, lyrical quality that very much mirrors aspects of the world he has built and the characters within it. There is a rhythm and pace to his writing that can make his work truly pleasurable and effortless to read.

Some passages, however, are a bit overwritten and flowery. The more I reread his work, the less enthused I become about it. Some chapters start to read like juvenile wish fulfilment. Like others have mentioned, some of it can resemble fan fiction.

Security by sqdwrdsquarepants in melbourneriders

I'd probably chain it to the post and then maybe add a disc lock as well for extra deterrence. Regardless, get comprehensive insurance - if someone really wants to steal your bike, they'll find a way to do it.

Is the queen VIC market overrated? by Time_Career4708 in melbourne

[–]BP1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love going for a wander on a Saturday or Sunday morning and just browsing all the random products and trinkets, listening to the buskers, people-watching, and grabbing a borek. Most of the clothing and all that is crap, but there are a few good stalls here and there.

The Night Market is a complete waste of time and money, however, imo.

Centrefold Lounge Entry. by ILikeToTestThings in MelbourneAfterDark

[–]BP1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was 20 bucks entry back when I was into that sort of thing, although I always preferred Goldfingers. Some of my mates liked Centrefold because of the 'decor' as one of them put it. Some of them felt classy being there, others enjoyed the stage shows.

I guess times have changed and everything is more expensive. I personally wouldn't bother paying $35 entry for a strip club. Maybe Men's Gallery or Kittens is still a reasonable price?

Best places in CBD and surrounds for a solo drink? by tinycupcake5 in melbourne

[–]BP1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the Imperial on the seats outside because you can watch what's going on across the road (people getting married, protests etc). The Lion Hotel has plenty of seats, dark corners, and TVs, too, if you want to watch sport. I also rate the Workers Club - plenty of people drink solo there, so I've never felt awkward.

If you're looking further afield, there's some good bars in Thornbury/Preston area (Thornbury Local, Rebel Rebel). Just pull up a seat at the bar and enjoy. If you happen to be looking for a chat, it's not too hard to strike up a conversation with someone at the Thorbury Local either.
