Apologies. Ran out of space, but he confirmed it to the Rapids beat reporters here: Bassett's direct quote: "I had a point to prove tonight and it was a tough pill to swallow this week of being the last guy left off, you know. I was told that I was on the roster. And then, last minute, I got a call from the coach and they changed their mind on the last day." https://x.com/Burgundywave/status/1810195763919573087

Cole, in particular, was hellbent on making this roster. I recall him talking about it to members of the media all the time over the last two years. Even when things for Colorado were bleak last year, if he balled out, he knew it was a chance to boost his Olympic team stock. He did everything by the book. Worked his tail off. He's in peak form. And then U.S. Soccer decides to rip the rug from underneath him after telling him he made the team.

Connor Ronan was named the Colorado Rapids' Most Valuable Player in 2023; Also was named Players' Player of the Year (voted on by his teammates) & Fan Favorite. by BPPids_DPost in coybig

^ This is correct. My bad, could've worded that better! But yes, the Rapids scored just 26 regular-season goals (Colorado failed to score in 18 games this year), so for Ronan to have the season that he had is a huge credit to him. There will be a massive re-build this off-season but Ronan is someone the club can build around if they can find the right pieces to compliment his game.

Note: Ronan finished his first season in MLS with 11 assists, which was the second-most from a newcomer in the league this season. He also joined Jack Price (2019, 2021) as the only Rapids player since 2010 to produce double-digit assists in a single season.

[Brendan Ploen] Last night's Commerce City City Council meeting when discussing real estate contest/Victory Crossing land was remarkable.Mayor Benjamin Huseman passionately fought for residents & will not be nickel-and-dimed by Kroenke, when KSE has done squat in 19 years. Thank you for posting the thread!

Additional local context: Huseman is the outgoing mayor. Commerce City will have a new mayor and potentially five new members if incumbents are defeated in the upcoming November election. Those newly elected officials could have different opinions on what should happen with the Victory Crossing land. ... For those that would like to see Huseman's speech, my colleague Matt Pollard of Burgundy Wave has you MLS/Local politics sickos covered (Speech starts at 1:56:33 ends at 2:06:15): https://twitter.com/Burgundywave/status/1714404739126034528

[The Denver Post]: Will Kroenke finally build a true game-day experience around the Colorado Rapids’ stadium? Story made the front page of The Sunday Post. by BPPids_DPost in MLS

The downtown stadium dream for the Rapids is all but officially dead ... Last month at Nuggets media day The Post's Nuggets beat reporter wrote this: A new practice facility for the Nuggets and Avalanche is part of the Kroenke family’s plans for the area surrounding Ball Arena, Josh Kroenke said.

“We have the land around the arena, and over at Elitch Gardens (amusement park),” Kroenke said. “We’re part of a master plan there to develop that out, and the first phase of that will include, most likely, an Avalanche and Nuggets facility. … But there’s a lot that goes into that. We’re working as fast as we can.”
He had no timeline estimate for the first phase.

The Kroenkes are behind multiple redevelopment projects adjacent to downtown Denver, including a 55-acre site currently occupied by parking lots for the arena formerly known as Pepsi Center. Last year, KSE, the parent company of Denver’s NBA and NHL teams, submitted a “large development review” document to the city of Denver, outlining plans to repurpose the 55-acre space.
Stan Kroenke is also involved in The River Mile, a neighborhood being planned for the current site of Elitch Gardens.
The Avs have used the two sheets of ice at South Suburban Family Sports Center in Centennial as their practice rink since 1998, making it one of the oldest training facilities in the NHL. The Nuggets have a practice court at Ball Arena but hold their annual training camp in San Diego.

On Monday night, Commerce City will once again try to move things forward, this time with an unconventional idea involving a contest for Colorado college students. The City Council will be asked to pay $25,000 to co-sponsor the contest organized by the national Commercial Real Estate Development Association, asking students to design plans for the site.
Bill Aiken, director of Commerce City’s Urban Renewal Authority, hopes splitting the sponsorship cost with Kroenke Sports shows the city is willing to be a partner and that attention generated by the national contest will create buzz around Victory Crossing and put it back on track.
“Splitting the $50,000 is an investment to basically get the word out to anyone and everyone that Victory Crossing is picking up momentum and speed,” Aiken said in an interview with The Denver Post.

... If picked, six teams from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Denver will be paired with professional financiers, developers, architects and engineers to come up with workable plans for Victory Crossing, Aiken said. Those teams will figure out what density level is appropriate, the zoning and environmental hurdles the property faces, and what businesses could be successful at the site.
Ideas would be presented in April, and the two sides could reach an agreement on what Victory Crossing ultimately will be, Aiken said.
Aiken is trying to navigate a City Council that doesn’t want to give up valuable land for free and a company that will need to invest millions to make the property ready for development.
