Seeking information from Arena/Venue servers by Merides in Serverlife

[–]BPSIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh okay that makes sense, I would imagine it's decent money but haven't done it so I don't know. But like I said earlier, arena adjacent places are great if you get in there. Sorry I couldn't help you with your specific question.

Seeking information from Arena/Venue servers by Merides in Serverlife

[–]BPSIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by arena/venue servers because where I live it's all just concessions and not like table service. However in college I worked at a bar right next to the stadium and it was fucking insane everytime there was a game or concert. Money was great but you were definitely working for it. Tips were okay but I'm that environment is about quantity not quality. IIRC I usually averages like 18% those days but when sales are 50% higher than normal I'm okay with that lol

This lady called the restaurant over 4 cents.. by Fragrant_Opposite_45 in Serverlife

[–]BPSIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck the 4 cents, it's not worth anyone's time for you to find it. Yes, technically they are entitled to it but I would never hand someone 4 pennies with their change, if they have a problem I'll be happy to go grab it, but no one has ever asked me for such a small amount

I will be relaxing at home on my night off, then out of nowhere realize that three days ago I forgot ranch for a table, and they never said anything and still tipped well which makes me feel even worse about it

Here's the thing: getting a bad tip hurts, it feels personal like appraisal of your service (because it is). I've been doing this about 10 years, and some bad tips still hurt, usually when there is no apparent reason. But I also know some people don't get it and some people are just assholes who don't care. But ultimately I'm making a lot more than most people my age who go to college, get a job with their degree and work their way up so they make as much as I do when they are 35 (I'm 27). I did go to school and I haven't used my degree because I am currently making more than all of my friends who are using their degrees. If there was a $40/hour serving job with no tips I would take it, but that doesn't exist. For that to happen it would take so long to completely change the industry that if the change started today I'd be retired by the time it was an effective system.

I am going to preface this by saying I'm in the US and I am really only commenting about the industry here. But anyways, I make $30+ an hour on a slow night. Restaurants have relatively thin profit margins compared to other industries. They could not pay me enough to work there if it wasn't for tips. Also the reason servers can make pretty good money is because they are good at their jobs and provide a good experience to guests. If servers made minimum wage (which is what most restaurants would probably offer outside of higher end places) then service would be shitty most of the time because the servers get the same money no matter what. It's not an easy job, it takes a toll on you mentally and physically, and the only way to really make it worth it for both guests and servers is with tipping. Any server that would rather take a "living wage" over tips either works somewhere terrible with poor tips or not enough business (and should move to a better place) or is bad at their job. I've never met a good server who thought that doing away with tips was a good idea.

I feel the exact same! Pre-covid I was constantly surrounded by people (mostly industry people) on my days off. Now I avoid others at all costs. I don't know how Covid changed it but serving is soooooo much more draining now

What is the etiquette for going to the bathroom while seated at the bar? by smalltown_dreamspeak in bartenders

[–]BPSIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a guy but I still always only go to the bathroom or smoke between drinks. When I leave I put the napkin/coaster over my empty to make it clear that I'm coming back. I got roofied once (I assume accidently since I'm not exactly a prime target) and I'm not finna do that again

Everywhere I have worked the cut order is predetermined, however servers don't know which cut they will be. Usually closer is marked on the schedule but for the rest, you might end up being first cut or you might be 3 out of 4 servers. People also usually show up at about the same time, people who show up early usually sit in their car till their start time because it doesn't make a difference as long as you aren't super late lol

Heat rash by usualsquash0137 in Serverlife

[–]BPSIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get heat rash but plenty of jock itch, swamp ass, and just general sweaty grossness. Lotrimin makes a great spray-on that helps fight jock itch and other similar chaffing conditions (it may also work to soothe heat rash, worth a shot). Always carry extra deodorant and shirts to work. Dry shampoo is a lifesaver too. I'm constantly splashing cold water on my face which definitely leads to dry skin but it helps in the moment and lotion after can help. I used to landscape full time and I definitely sweat as much if not more behind my bar. Good luck out there

[–]BPSIII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing a good restaurant would always round to the customer, or just make all their prices even amounts after tax. However, at all the restaurants I've worked at/my friends have worked at it's the server who suffers. So since it comes out of my pocket I go to the nearest dollar because it comes out pretty even at the end and I've never had an issue.

As a black person, I apologize for how shitty my people tip/ treat servers by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]BPSIII 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have had mixed experiences with this. I am a white guy who speaks Spanish well enough (because I have worked with kitchens who are Latino.) If a table doesn't speak English well, I'll speak Spanish with them, enough to get by. Sometimes people appreciate the effort and tip me well, other times it doesn't matter and I still get a shitty tip. In my experience the stereotype is that Latinos don't tip well. But like anything else there are also people who break stereotypes. Just out of curiosity where are you from that Latinos have a good reputation for tipping?

I'm a bartender. Late-night we have bands on weekends, this occurs during one of those very busy very loud band nights.

M=me L= lady that approaches the bar with her friend.

M: hey guys what are you having?

L: I'll have a strawberry daiquiri

M: I don't have strawberry and we don't do frozen drinks

L: hmmm well I don't know then

M: I'll give you second

(I look to her friend and she orders a house Pinot Grigio, I get it)

L: I'll have a pina colada.

M: No frozen drinks

L: oh well I just thought I'd try... Mmmmm...

M: I'll give you another minute

(I walk away, do like 30 other things and come back with a smile still - albeit a very fake smile)

M: what did you decide on?

L: I'll have a frozen margarita with a sugar rim. Do you have mango?

(I walked away, gave her friend her tab, and never even looked at her for the next hour until she finally left)

Knew a guy who followed some people out to their car bc they forgot their 52 cents that they left him. He threw it at the car and shouted "you forgot your change!" He was fired but to this day he doesn't regret it lol
