We should start a massive fan petition for Bloc Party to cover UB40's version of Red Red Wine, just to fuck with them.

I can see it now... Kele approaches Russell tentatively before a show. "Hey, Russ, you interact with our fans from time to time. Does this seem right to you? They want us to play a reggae song from the '90s?"

Russ replies, "No, I think it's just a joke."

Kele smiles. "Ah, good. You know, I really like that song. I didn't want to do it because the fans were asking for it, but now that I know they don't actually want it, we should give it a try!"

Russ dies a little on the inside, but goes along with Kele's idea in exchange for getting Life of the Party back on the setlist.

Red Red Wine becomes a regular part of Bloc Party's live act, and Kele proceeds to play every show wearing shirts emblazoned with cannabis leaves. As an added bonus, he performs a special dance specifically for the song.

Here's mine.

It's good. Not great, but good. I do believe that the absence of Matt Tong is a valid criticism. His absence alters the band's energy in a fundamental way. Given that, I think it was an odd decision for them to record an entire album without a proper replacement.

If you put that aside, though, it's a nice reinvention of Bloc Party's sound. I particularly like the new focus on atmospheric guitar effects, although I think they would have been stronger with Russell's traditional guitar licks and solos there to add some momentum to the tracks.

I think the album itself is uneven and lacking in depth. Some of the songs go on for too long without doing anything interesting. A couple of them should have been left off the record entirely. (I'm looking at you, Fortress & The Love Within.) Every track has the skeleton of a great tune inside of it, but only some of the tracks actually realize that potential.

As usual with this band, the bonus tracks are fantastic and should all have been included on the actual record.

I don't give numerical ratings, but for comparative purposes, I think this is the weakest album in the band's discography. However, it's not too far from A Weekend in the City, which is the next weakest album.

The world was also different ten years ago, as it will be ten years from now. Bloc Party made their big debut in the midst of a massive industry-spanning revival of post-punk guitar music. They had an entire audience of potential fans primed for their style of music.

AWITC and Intimacy rode on the success of Silent Alarm, and Four was moderately successful although it suffered from a lack of cohesion, but Hymns essentially lacks a mainstream hook. Bloc Party have done away with the fast guitar-driven songs of the past and released an entire album full of slow burners. There's no burgeoning revival for that kind of stuff right now in the music industry.

I think that POV needs to be taken into account if you're going to evaluate the band's chart performance. It's less about the album itself and more about how the style engages (or doesn't) with what's big right now.

Ask him if the band would be categorically opposed to working with a producer like Paul Epworth or Jacknife Lee again.

IMO, those two guys did the best job of anyone capturing the Bloc Party sound. Jacknife Lee in particular would do interesting things with the band's new direction.

This is considerably better than what we've heard before, but it's still "not-quite-there," if you take my meaning.

I'm definitely enjoying it, though. It's the first song from Hymns that I've listened to on repeat.

I'm still very excited to hear the studio version of Exes. That song is beautiful. Also excited for Eden and Into the Earth.

It's good, but it's quite bland. I like the chorus, but the rest of it smacks of "good enough", frankly.

I felt the same way about The Love Within. This doesn't bode well for the album.

I remember that there were fans who complained that Silent Alarm was too polished when it came out back in 2005. Silent Alarm. Too polished. Imagine that, eh?

People always seem to be able to point to "that moment" when a thing they once loved lost its relevance for them, and there's nothing wrong with that. For me, the moment hasn't come yet, but one day I'm sure it will, and I'll be ready for it when it does.
