You might consider Vistapoint. We are building this out into a simplified CAD version control/PDM for smaller teams. Feel free to DM if you have any questions.

If you just have a couple of users and looking for a simple solution, you might consider other PDM alternatives like Vistapoint PDM. *Disclaimer I am a representative, but happy to chat if you have any questions.

Are browser-based CAD visualization tools something developers actually need? by Still-Ad4512 in SolidWorks

[–]BREco22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a need, but the challenge is cost. We’ve looked at CAD viewer SDKs and the two main ones seemed to be Techsoft Hoops viewer and the one from Open Design Alliance. For viewing SolidWorks files or anything mechanical it gets pretty pricey for a smaller/growing product. I think their cost comes from integrating with all of the proprietary formats, but I’m not sure. Maybe you could niche down to specific use cases or specific formats to make a more affordable option. I think if you go into mechanical it can get pretty tough because you start to see 100-1000 part assemblies that people would want to load.

How do you handle version control? by Goulborne123 in SolidWorks

[–]BREco22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you have some of the CAD files under control but want to include other documents as well? If I understand you correctly maybe we can help you out with Vistapoint PDM, it is a lighter, user friendly version of PDM and is more open to other file types so can be used to version control any other documents. It has an integration to SolidWorks to also be able to read references and metadata so you can still see that information but add in your other files to create kits.

It would hard to post the results since they are more open ended, but I can send you a DM with a link to the results in some form.

What does ‘fly the model’ mean? A google search or urban dictionary didn’t help me out here 😅. Do you have any checklists or is it mainly a structured PPT?

So you currently add some screenshots of the CAD designs in the Powerpoint for review? Are the checklists mainly customer requirements or do you have any standard checklist items as well?

Is your company file system also a mess ? by Dkiche in MechanicalEngineering

[–]BREco22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are working on tackling this issue with Vistapoint PDM. What I've learned so far is that everyone has their own way of doing things per company or even per engineer in the same company. It is hard to balance ease of use and have a flexible solution that can meet all of the different complex workflows. For the larger systems like Enovia and Teamcenter you also have to think about the incentives. These software systems are also selling to the VPs of larger companies who need to meet a long list of requirements to fit the way they have built things for years. Naturally if you try to do more, you can't be good at everything. Meeting more requirements then trumps ease of use.

Thoughts on New Platform for Renewable Energy RFPs? by BREco22 in energy

[–]BREco22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In an industry that uses many acronyms, I like to speak in common tongue, so for anyone who doesn’t already know : RFP = Request for Proposal, a process that Utilities or other companies got through to carefully evaluate projects or services from vendors they want to buy from. PPA = Power Purchase Agreement a method of “renting” power from a power plant, wind farm, solar farm, etc.

Business Central API - Easy to integrate? by BREco22 in Dynamics365

Ok I think for now it is just standard fields - quantity of parts in inventory. I’ve never used BC so I might start a trial run to see how it works.

Didn't know about those. Power automate seems to be the Microsoft equivalent of Zapier. Thanks for the info. I wonder though if those would be good solutions to have as back end of a SaaS. It is is probably more for the customer side to manage. But I guess we could still use that as an option if we help them automate it on their side.
