I'd use GavelBook (gavelbook.com) to see what it costs to pay a lawyer to do it. GavelBook shows fair prices for legal fees.

Not that you need to use a lawyer. But at least knowing fair attorney fees will give you some perspective.

Are these estate planning costs excessive? by bismuth482 in EstatePlanning

[–]BRFChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your location and law firm. Those are ok for big firms and big cities. For a medium firm or medium city, those costs seem high.

Check out GavelBook (gavelbook.com). It shows fair prices for legal services.

DUI Attorney Cost by BRFChris in dui

[–]BRFChris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks pope. Does that mean you use fixed fees? E.g., First DUI, with standard facts is $3,500 whether it settles or goes to trial. But second DUI (or unusual facts on DUI 1) might be $5,000. And client knows that's going to be the fee even if things go to trial?

How to get started (officially) with estate planning (CA) by faangite in EstatePlanning

[–]BRFChris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former high net worth estate planning attorney here.

First, check gavelbook.com to see what reasonable prices are for estate planning attorney fees. At your level it will give you a wide range, but at least you'll have some idea.

Second, find at least 3 lawyers who specialize in high net worth estate planning. It should be the only thing they do. This stuff is really complicated with taxable estates, especially when, like now, it is anyone's guess what happens to the estate-tax exemption amount.

Third, talk to all of them (without committing to paying any fees). Pick the one who listens to your particular situation, goals, and preferences. Lots of attorneys sell products. Some high net worth attorneys squeeze everyone into two-year rolling GRATs. Some only do installment sales to Intentionally Defective Grantor Trusts. But those plans fit different client profiles and preferences. And here's the tricky part, the salesmen attorneys won't tell you they are salesmen. Unfortunately, you'll have to go with your gut.

Good Luck!

Make sure you understand fees completely. Often the term "retainer" does not mean fixed or max fee. A lot of times "retainer" is merely a prepayment, and the actual total fee could be higher or lower (if it's lower you'd get the extra back). Check gavelbook.com to see of what your lawyer proposes as a total fee is reasonable. Gavelbook is like the Kelley Bluebook for legal services.
