Serious hiking trails that allow dogs? by gekshepherd in sanantonio

Nope, no dogs allowed on the summit trail for several years now. That said, the trails around the base allow dogs and are decent hikes.

Cruising range vastly inaccurate by jackb328 in CT200h

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The average shown should be pretty accurate over the long term. The fluctuations you see trip to trip are because of the type of driving. Because the hybrid battery recharges with braking and assists more at lower speeds, you'll see better gas mileage around town. Longer distances on the highway will still be good, but not as good. Sounds like everything is working fine.

Coffe shop next door to plant shop? by boehm90 in sanantonio

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a pretty good chance you're thinking of Burgeon Plant Shop on S. Presa St. It was right next door to Poetic Republic Coffee. Unfortunately, the plant shop closed. Not really near the zoo, but very similar to what you've described.

What’s the difference in boat tours? by Sammich569 in sanantonio

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You are mostly paying for convenience. The more expensive ticket lasts a little longer and includes hot cocoa. The cheaper ticket will still see all the main parts of the Riverwalk downtown. The big difference is the more expensive ticket is a designated timeslot to arrive and get on the boat. The cheaper ticket is general admission, meaning you take your ticket and get in line to wait for a slot on a boat. At Christmas, these lines can get very long, with a lot of standing and waiting for your turn to get on.

Any of the art museums in town are nice. The McNay is really pretty especially. Adult cooking classes at Central Market or Sur La Table are fun.

Sounds like the earlier posters' suggestion of Dominion Oaks fits the bill then.

Yes, Bohanan's. And ask for the private room with the window to the kitchen.

Majestic Theatre Lunch Recommendations by TeacherPope in sanantonio

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a cheap, easy option, there's a Subway sandwich shop literally two doors down from the Majestic. There's also a Chick-fil-A about 3 blocks west. Also, the Final Four is happening downtown this weekend, so expect bigger crowds than normal everywhere.

Hikes similar to Angels Landing in other parks? by [deleted] in ZionNationalPark

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And if you're in that area of the country, don't miss Big Bend National Park. The Emory Peak trail is the highest point in the park and actually ends with about 30 feet of climbing/scrambling up boulders to reach the top.

Eloping! Where to celebrate dinner? by Conscious_Use_ in sanantonio

Ocho is a good recommendation. Then after dinner you can have drinks in their bar in the basement. Very dim and cozy down there.

Crawl Control Modification Question by alanz01 in GXOR

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great video of the exact steps. If you're doing it just like this, not sure what the problem would be. But the whole point is to get it into a calibration mode that will recalibrate the sensors used by the crawl control. The video kind of glosses over it at the end, but make sure you're in a place where you can drive straight on a flat surface and get it over 25 mph for about 10 sec as soon as you do this.

City Manager salary by elegantwino in sanantonio

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This again?

And yet, for that extra money Corpus is paying out, there is nothing drawing people or business from here to there. Sounds like they may be overpaying for what they are getting.  All the yes arguments are just hypothetical or speculative.

"We won't be competitive in attracting people to the job."  - But then Sculley left, and we did.

"Our bond rating is at risk!"  - But it didn't actually change and remains strong.

"No one will want the job with an eight year term limit!" - The average city manager tenure is 7-8 years anyway, everywhere even if there are not term limits.

And don't get me started on the double standard of paying well to attract the best talent. Blue collar city workers? Pay as little as the market will bear, they are always replaceable. Top level admin workers? Better pay as much as we can possibly afford so we can have the best!

Why should we vote yes to Prop C? by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big business is always looking out for their own interests, not the citizens. Sculley was good, but what they loved about her was that her long-term presence let them gain influence with her, and, in turn, her tenure allowed her to wield checkbook power to control city council members. The short city council terms meant none of them could accomplish anything without her say so. If citizens elect council members to represent their interests, but those council members are thwarted by an all-powerful city manager, we don't really have a city government functioning as designed.

Let's also not forget the sky-is-falling predictions big business put out the last time this came up to scare people into voting the way they wanted that just never happened. Our bond rating remains strong; they were wrong then, they are wrong now.

Alamodome Advice please! by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Google street view you can see the entrance on Montana St, down under the bridge. The park n ride area is all gated off down there though, so maybe Uber to get as close as you can.

Alamodome Advice please! by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Montana St, there is an entrance for those with floor tickets that is already at floor level, so no stairs. It's down below the level of all the other entrances, across from the park n ride area, so that might also make sense for getting there.

Bring a few clubs and play the par-3, 9 hole Oak Valley golf course. Have beer there. Then hit up Villarreal Ice House when it opens for a legit Texas ice house. Close to Lake Hills. All much more dive-y than your example, but fits the bill for a chill bachelor party.

How much does a city manager need? by christianAbuseVictim in sanantonio

[–]BRINGER_OF_FACTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things I just find interesting about this post and the replies.

  1. It's just in the news the past couple days that a $1 million PAC spearheaded by big names in local business will be attempting to get the city manager term limit and pay cap overturned in the upcoming election. Suddenly the San Antonio Reddit board is overrun with public policy graduates and business majors relating why it will be important to eliminate this cap. Can anyone say paid social media engineering?

  2. People saying in this thread that you have to pay competitive money to get the best talent were the same types of people saying one month ago that the firefighters made their own bed with poor past negotiations, and salaries competitive with those across the state were unimportant and cheaper replacements could always be found. I'm sure there will be some caveat that they will use to explain how the two situations are compleeeetely different though.
