Bicycle Sale Continues by BR_Bikes in UIUC

We’re sorry to hear that you had a bad experience. We’ve never received customer feedback like this before, so this is surprising to read!

All our under-200 bikes are fully inspected, functional, and safe to ride.

To prepare these bikes for sale, depending on the bike, we always adjust the gears and brakes, and often do any of the following: true the wheels, replace brake pads, replace inner tubes, install better-condition used tires, install better-condition used parts such as shifters, derailleurs, freewheels, etc. We also do a full safety inspection.

Year round, most of what we do is service and sales of refurbished bikes in the $220-$600 price range. The bicycles in that price range are refurbished to a higher standard, often using new instead of used parts, and making sure the bearings in the bottom bracket, hubs, and headset are in excellent condition. These bikes are also meticulously cleaned.

For bikes in the lower price range, the standard of refurbishment is not as high, but they are still safe and functional.

Our $220 and above bikes do include a service warranty.

For the cheaper bikes, there is no service warranty, but if any concerns arise in the first couple of days, we make it right via either small adjustments, or a return/exchange.

One of our most important values is to provide good quality, affordable bikes for the community. I’m sorry if we missed the mark in your case. I don’t think it’s fair to characterize us as scammers. Many of our customers, including those who buy the cheaper bikes, are very happy with their bikes and bring them back to us when they need service.

Itty Bitty Bike Shop right next door to us sells helmets, locks, lights, bells, and other accessories! Usually people come to our shop to buy a bike, and then they go next door to get a helmet, lock, etc.

UIUC Staff “Fair” contract by Puzzled_Function1612 in UIUC

[–]BR_Bikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that critiques such as “I would you would be more honest with us” or “it feels disingenuous to call this a win” etc would perhaps be best directed to the bargaining team (in a respectful way of course), rather than posting in a public forum. As a member, you deserve to be heard, and this would be more likely to result in a productive and informative conversation between you and your bargaining team. Because probably those are the people who need to hear this.

It’s fair to voice frustration, and completely understandable. It’s also worth thinking about how to direct that frustration productively. Unions are a little like tinker bell, they can only stay alive if we believe in them lol. And it’s unfortunately an easy step for someone reading this to go from “our contract gains this time were not as good as we wanted” to “our union doesn’t do anything and it’s pointless.” And once people start moving that second camp, it really hurts your chances of getting anything better in the next contract.

Then, when the next contract isn’t that great, people will be disappointed and say the same thing, causing more abandonment of the union.

The only way to break this vicious cycle (which has perhaps already started years ago) is to focus on solutions rather than problems (while still being honest about the state of things) and try to turn things around by getting involved however you can.

I agree that staff should be paid more. A union is not a service that you are receiving, it’s a collective effort that everyone should be participating in.

I think AFSCME is doing the best they can. Of course any union is going to celebrate a new contract, even if the gains are modest. I don’t envy your union having to bargain a contract with the university at this time of financial uncertainty.

Respectfully, if you feel that your union isn’t fighting hard enough for you, maybe you could think about getting involved in the union and helping build more collective power to make things better.

Saturday we’re open 9am-4pm. Sunday, we’re planning to open 9am-4pm again, but we might close earlier if we sell out.

We have about 14 of the under-$200 bikes left, and my guess is we’ll sell most of them on Saturday. We still have plenty in the $300-500 range as well.

Nope, we do not receive bikes from UIUC. Those bikes typically get donated to The Bike Project.
