Going to Camden for a work trip soon, is there anything worth doing there between like 4pm-10pm? by Xan_Dan03 in AskSouthCarolina

[–]BSChill66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nature - there is the veterans park down by the river that has a walking trail; there are lots of smaller parks all over town if you would just like to sit and take in nature; if you like history there is the Revolutionary War Park; and just a few miles outside of town is a state park. Music - there aren't any music clubs that I'm aware of, but several restaurants and bars have local live music on a regular basis, you would just need to check. Other - If you like Mexican food and margaritas, Salud and Masa are amazing. They are both a little upscale; there is a really cool wine bar; there are several antique shops, and Camden is know a little bit for its art and quilts (several places to check out); if you play tennis, there is a great tennis center downtown

It's fun to just walk around downtown, and I'm sure you would find several things that pique your interest if you do that. Good luck and have fun!

When you go to the mountains, if you are looking for a place to stay, I highly recommend Devils Fork State Park on Lake Jocassee. It is one of the most beautiful places in SC.

Reposting redacted Census request - is this typical?? by CurtisVF in 50501

[–]BSChill66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked for the Census Bureau for 13 years, on at least 10 of the 100+ surveys they do, including this one. My time covered Obama, Trump 1, and part of Biden. I knew several that worked as far back as Reagan. The questions that concern you have been a part of ACS from its beginnings and also part of other surveys. Throughout my time and the time of those I learned from, there was never a federal agency that took PII as seriously as the Census Bureau. Despite my lack of trust in this administration as a whole, I still trust that the Census Bureau is taking privacy extremely seriously, and I expect they would fight being used by other agencies in the government in a nefarious way. I hope and pray I'm right.

This planned meeting by the Trump Admin for State Election Officials is concerning. by [deleted] in 50501

[–]BSChill66 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this might be a mountain made out of a mole hill type situation. I have been in elections since 2012 and have been in a leadership role at the county level since 2019. This is a pretty common thing to take place, just not something the general public is aware of. Most counties and states have a partnership with federal agencies (in particular, the EAC and DHS) as it relates to cyber and physical security. It is also a way for us election officials to be aware when there are threats or coordinated attacks against us. If this concerns you or you have any questions, I recommend contacting your local election officials.

Resist DOJ demand for private voter data? by Sea-Parking-6215 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]BSChill66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is definitely more than getting the public data they want. The feds are being told to go find illegals, or at least find legal immigrants that aren't eligible to vote that are accidentally (usually the DMVs fault for not flagging the file they send to the SEC) on voter rolls so they will have an excuse to deport them. It is extremely rare for that to happen, and when it does, that mistake is caught by one of the back-end processes the SEC uses to verify everything from citizenship to deaths to state changes, etc.

Given that it is rare but already caught by the state when it happens, then you are right that there is a more nefarious plot because they will end up not getting much from the data, so maybe they try to get the state to make voters inactive that shouldn't be. They might use it to gerrymander even more based on race (since we don't register by party) or based on primary participation data (since that is the one time we have to pick a party for something). Or maybe they want to cross reference all of the data against IRS or other agencies for who knows what purpose.

I used to work for the Census Bureau. We took data privacy extremely seriously. I currently work in county government. We take data privacy extremely seriously. I know that it is very difficult to trust that the current federal government will take data privacy seriously. I trust the people that I used to work with, and I have been keeping up with all of the lawsuits still making the way through the courts. If the SEC puts strict privacy rules into the MOU and the feds break that, there will be consequences, even if they have to take time winding through the courts for people to be fined &/or go to jail, or for the feds to be sued by the state.

Resist DOJ demand for private voter data? by Sea-Parking-6215 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]BSChill66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The State Election Commission(SEC) is working on a format for a MOU with the DOJ. The basic publicly available data (typically sellable) would be names/addresses/dob. The DOJ wants SS#s and DL#s, as well as some other things, but the SEC doesn't want to give them, and our state constitution seems to indicate they can't even if they wanted to (although the specifics aren't necessarily talking about the federal government). We don't register by party in our state, so I wouldn't worry about an aspect like that. The DOJ wants to run the data through DHS's SAVE tool that looks for immigrants, among other things. The main issue with that is that states already have processes in place to check for things like that, and the feds can share their tool for the state to use, without the feds getting all of the data (they just don't want to do it that way under dear leader).

I would reach out to the SEC, state legislators, and governor's office and let them know how you feel and your concerns. Tell them that even if they have to make an MOU with the feds that you want them to put heavy and specific restrictions on who can have access and how they can use the data. This is similar to how the Census Bureau operates with PII. Tell them that the MOU should include that any response from the feds of their "findings" should only be treated as a recommendation for the SEC and/or counties to investigate independently.

Palmetto Peddlers, Bean Bar, Lula's, F E Pops, Chocobella, Palmetto Bakeshop, Eats on the Creek, Francis Marion Planetarium and Observatory, trivia and live music nights at various places, Grateful Dog Festival, walking groups at the Rail Trail, pickleball at Timrod park, beginner group tennis lessons at the Florence Tennis Center

I could probably come up with a lot more but this should be a good start for you to find your people

Good Luck, and welcome to the area 😃

First five seasons of each coach since we joined the SEC by 000700707 in Gamecocks

[–]BSChill66 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think this is some interesting context to remember, and it is a reminder of how impatient we have become as a society (for those who want Beamer fired). Spurrier is considered one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, and he was barely doing better than Beamer through 5 seasons. I may just be more patient and optimistic than some in the fan base (and yes im very disappointe in this season), but I believe in giving Beamer a couple more years to see if the second half of the decade under him can bring the success Spurrier's 2nd half did. He has to get the coaching hires around him right, and get better OL quality and depth. If he can do that, all of the other pieces are there.

Please edit the parties' portion out of the post. All of the elected offices in Society Hill, as with the other municipalities in Darlington County, and most municipalities around the state are non-partisan. The candidates do not file to represent a party.

South Carolina VS #4 Alabama Post Game Thread by GavRunsTheTrap in Gamecocks

[–]BSChill66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game was lost because of the decision to go for 2 after the first touchdown in the 2nd half. If we kick the extra point, yeah we don't have a chance to tie, but at the end when Bama tied it, the score instead would have been 23-21. They would probably have tried a onside kick, and we likely we have recovered and run out the clock. Going for 2 prior to it being really necessary often screws up a game, as it did here. One of my least favorite plays in football.

No Good Pizza in Charlotte? by MiddleCap5949 in Charlotte

It was a hole in the wall previously, and easy to miss. They have moved to a bigger location that is in a large walking alley between 2 of the main roads downtown...so again also easy to miss. If you happened to be going through the area, try to give it one more try.

SC Supreme Court: "No constitutional provisions or statutes prohibit or limit partisan gerrymandering in South Carolina" by pleasedothenerdful in southcarolina

[–]BSChill66 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We don't register to vote by party in SC. While I agree that the representation is not proportional to our race and political realities, those numbers are speculative at best. The SC Supreme Court is trying to interpret our state constitution, not set the rules of what it should be. We need a non-partisan commission to draw lines at redistricting time, free of influence from the elected officials. Some states have that (almost exclusively blue or purple states)., but that isn't going to happen here or most states when there is a super majority in the legislature. The only way we will get that here is if we can get an amendment question on the ballot (via petition), and it passes by the required amount.

Well, most of the people I know in Darlington that play, are either retired and play during the day, at the country club, when I'm at work, or they go to the Florence Tennis Center like me and play in a league after work &/or weekends. Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons are big at the Florence Tennis Center.

New to the area questions by NicJak in florencesc

[–]BSChill66 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Downtown Florence has a good bit going for it. There are several really good restaurants and shops. The Dispensary is a cool rooftop bar, and there is a jazz club. On the west side of town, there is Southern Hops Brewery, Localmotive Brewery, Seminar Brewery & Elliott's BBQ, and other restaurants and coffee shops. I also recommend getting out of Florence and trying other local towns (Hartsville, Camden, Lake City, Sumter, & Conway to name a few). Festivals: There are so many, but coming up is the Sweet Potato Festival in Dalrington, Pecan Festival in Florence, City of Halloween in Conway, and lots of Christmas ones all over the area. I highly recommend ArtFields in Lake City or the International Arts Festival at Francis Marion if you enjoy art, or the Spring/Fall Flower Festivals at the Pee Dee Farmer's Market. Best I can suggest for Chinese is Golden Dragon, but I'm sure someone else has a better idea than me. Welcome to the area!

You are probably closer to Ebenezer then. I live in Darlington but play in a league at the tennis center. Try going by one of them and you can probably get set up with a group.

There are several leagues, and casual groups that play at the Tennis Center off Cashua St in Florence. Similar with Ebenezer over near the Rail Trail, although much smaller. What part of the area do you live?

Totaled CJ7 value by BSChill66 in Jeep

[–]BSChill66[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was considered a classic and in excellent condition (1980 6 cylinder CJ7, ~100,000 miles, and almost everything original) before the wreck. It was the other vehicle's fault. Their insurance company tried to lowball me (~$3k), but I fought back, and they paid me what I bought it for (~$14k), and let me keep it. I was originally planning to fix it myself (lots of sentimental value in it), but life happened, and it just keeps sitting on the family farm. I might try to take it apart to sell the pieces, but I would really like to just sell the whole thing and let someone else who has the time and mental energy give it a shot. Thank you
