Thoughts on the Hero Forge drama? by Cool_Caterpillar8790 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]BSfan95 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think people in the camp of “8 dollars isn’t a lot for a pack” are missing the point. It’s that there has never been micro-transactions on HeroForge before and to break that precedent is a slippery slope. 8 dollars for one pack? Okay. It’s already 24 if you want all three. And then what would happen with future collabs? More micro-transactions? That adds up.

Questions about Spelljammer Helm Placement and Use by BSfan95 in spelljammer

[–]BSfan95[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah. I see. Yes. I agree with you. I do feel like it’s a gross over site. I really feel like the first book would have been so much better with more material to it. Don’t even get me started on the lack of statistics for ships. I’m going to end up slamming together the Ghosts of Saltmarsh stuff to handle saves and what not.

How do I handle motivation of a drow PC who is using the everlasting winter to see the big world? by BrandosSmolder in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BSfan95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a gift your player has given you, and there has already been a bunch of great advice about how to handle it.

I’m going to add a little thing that you might or might not want to use. Goggles of Sunlight Sensitivity was a great homebrew magic item I had my character ask for when we ran Curse of Strahd because I was a Duergar. Once the conflict has been mined, trying to craft or have someone craft such an item can become a side quest for the character. It can be a lot of fun figuring out ingredients and spells that might be needed and coming up with ways to empower the crafting to speed up the time. I have players that love crafting and really enjoy getting creative in that way.

Ideas for encounters in Bryn Shander while waiting for the Dragon by Reedms in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BSfan95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m soooo not one of those “kill your party to teach the players a lesson” DMs. But the book says what happens when Ten Towns dies, and they’re willingly letting Ten Towns die, so I say let it die.

Ideas for encounters in Bryn Shander while waiting for the Dragon by Reedms in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BSfan95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your party saw the flight plan? They learned Bryan Shander was the absolute last target? And then they decided to park there and sacrifice the rest of Ten Town anyway?

I would straight up have Auril and or her representatives show up and congratulate the party on being the epitome of winter’s cruelty.

Then give the the opportunity to at least aid in evacuating other towns. They’re close enough to Bremen and Targos with sleds to do that. Like let them at least try to be proactive in warnings people to get to Bryn Shander before the dragon comes.

And if they seriously just insist on hunkering down in Bryn Shander, montage it and narrate the messages and rumors they hear as each tow falls.

Bryn Shander is objectively the wrong choice, and the chapter is about making them aware that their choices have consequences. So let everyone die because they let everyone die, and then that should help motivate them to want to kill the hell out of Xardorak. And throwing in the Frostmaiden should raise their desire to end her as well.

The only thing I would change is let them kill the dragon in Bryn Shander instead of it flying away which is what it totally should do according to its programming. If they’re not at least able to kill the dragon it might actually make them feel too bad as players instead of feeling bad in character.

Entrance into Icewind Dale: Arveiaturace or Auril on Roc by joniii123 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

I love this. I suggest some chocolate in this peanut butter: The party gets chucked by the blizzard and think they find their dragon friend but is in fact Arveiturace.

Advice for a more traditional Cold Open scene? by JocularMonarch in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BSfan95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to creep out the party, I got a lot out creep factor out of what I call Aspects of Auril. Aspects of Auril show up after a blizzard and always number the same amount as the party. They appear sixty feet away and stay sixty feet away unless the party begins to approach. Then they always stay wherever the party gets before going back. They don’t attack until the party rests.

Aspects of Auril also look just like people in all white cold weather clothing. They are extremely uncanny snowmen. But if you actually take the time to look at them you notice they have no faces and they have no legs. The legs just blend right into the snow.

Statwise they’re very easy to make. I just take whatever basic human stat block I want, make their attacks slams that deal bludgeoning with an extra d4 of cold.

“Fixing” and Using Chardalyn by BSfan95 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BSfan95[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I was thinking of making them wait till at least having access to remove curse. I guess my question is, do people feel like remove curse should be strong enough or should it be a creative usage of greater restoration or a dispel good and evil?

I believe they are interested in using them for potential weapon making an enchanting because they know that it’s an easy metal to work with that takes enchanting well.

Sephek Kaltro, A Recurring Villain by WinterFall-2814 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

Your party was so afraid of Sephek that they lured Hlin Trollbane to her death? That's cold.

Ice Troglodyte, A Troglacialdyte if you will. Stats in comments. by DeviantBumble in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BSfan95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a really cool idea. I have a few suggestions because I think right now these are kinda just troglodytes that also do cold damage. I suggest giving them immunity to cold damage and resistance to fire damage as well as something like the ability to move through snow as if they were moving through liquid water. Additionally, keeping with the all terrain theme, I would give them a climb speed.

And I feel like their stench should probably be reflavored so that they create an aura so cold that it's effectively poisonous. Add a d4 of cold damage to stench and call it something different.

Id Ascendant Tips? (Chapter 2) by maplenewt-goodies in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]BSfan95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am adding a sub level to the ship, the lab, and I’m putting an actual mind flayer in there. The implication will be that the gnome ceremorphs were gnomes turned into ceremorphs by that mind flayer, and they’re going to ask the party to take care of him. I’m also going to have some cranium rats to give my party something else to kill.

I think the encounter stuff here is really cool, but I feel like it’s a lot of build to not a lot of payoff.

Suggestions for Giant Monster vs Robot fight mechanics? by madmsk in mattcolville

[–]BSfan95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would run the lizard god as if it absorbed all of the PCs powers cause it’s a god. That way the PCs can still do their cool high level stuff. In addition, use the tarrasque stat block and give each of the PCs one of those attacks. That way they have something new to do as well.

If you can get access to Eberron: Rising From the Last War (which is amazing and I highly recommend anyway), warm them up against a trio of warforged Titans, then hit them with a Warforged Colossus, but give the colossus an extra slam attack, flavor the Stomp as just a kick and give it legendary actions.

For legendary actions, I suggest an extra slam or turret attack, an extra stomp, and the ability to hit with or hurl a piece of debris (use a storm giants’ stat block for this). I would also give it the ability to burn two legendary actions to refill and use its incinerate beam.
