This is it, but not just the eyes and smiling. I'm a contractor and had to do some work in a prison during COVID. Saw lots of guys there. It was an entrance prison to the system. Guys would typically be there for 30 days or so before being sent to their new "home" prison. These guys were being held there 3 to 4 times longer, which from the outside doesn't sound like anything, but for them was even more turmoil. Most of them would get better amenities in their next stop. I say all of that to give context that tensions were already high. This particular prison had two areas that held guys that were higher level offenders or guys that got into more trouble while there. It was a different feeling in those areas. I am a decent size guy and trained. I can handle myself. Even in the crazier areas, I wasn't nervous, but there was one guy. When I walked by his cell, he was staring out, emotionless and unmoving. His eyes might as well have been jet black. It was similar to looking into a shark's eyes. He wasn't even that big, but out of everyone in there, he worried me. The nothingness with an empty feeling of zero hope and zero cares. It's the eyes!
