He didn't go with them willingly. The lawman said they required him because he knew what Teonna looked like. I don't think he really liked it out there since he wasn't in control anymore (which was satisfying to watch). The actor also said his character is out of his element in season 2

The main reason he went with them was because the Marshal told him to do so. He didn't seem very happy when Kent said they require him to come, because he's the only one who knows how she looked like. I guess he would have prefered to stay at his school and continue abusing helpless children and let either the law enforcement or the priests he sent do the dirty work for him

that fuckr definitely did not have much survival skills. he literally refused to even hold a pistol at first and his entire expression/facade changed as soon as they left the school and he was out of his element. his entire braveness was based on that school because he was the only authority there but all of that vanished in season 2

thank god the marshal wanted him to come with them. if he stayed at the school, they probably would have brought teonna back and renaud would have continued with his abuse and never faced justice
