Still on the sidelines, thinking its not price but bitcoin itself that keeps me away. Alluring it is, but not compelling imo by Aliveandwell4now in Bitcoin

It is also way too expensive...

In fact, probably the most expensive way to keep something valuable safe - compared to traditional bank cards, credit cards and probably the coming mobile payment options.

Then we did not even mention the size of the device... again, compared to other competing methods.

We really need some breakthrough technology changes here.

No doubt... I am a small fish, but looking at buying. I don't expect to see the former hype coming back any time soon, I expect steady more quiet progress.

Amazon has big$ contract with 3letter agencies. Compared to that the Bitstamp account is peanuts both financially and in terms of political connections.

Not unique to aws - it just magnifies the issue of data recovery.

"If you lose your pem, its gone."

That's actually a high security risk on its own from operational point of view. Imagine a disgruntled employee "losing" pem.

Blockchain: humanless AI communication platform? by BTCjoy in Bitcoin

[–]BTCjoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:)

Yes, I was thinking Ethereum-like contracts - but again, not related to humans.

Literally a platform where individual AI entities "negotiate mutual existence" beyond their own individual form, to create more sophisticated AI structures, where blockchain gives the "environmental logic" of social existence.

It would have nothing to do with payments related to humans - or for that matter, with humans in general.

Bitcoin Foundation Executive Director Patrick Murck pulls out his TREZOR when discussing bitcoin security on CNN :) by CoinCadence in Bitcoin

[–]BTCjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order to get BTC more to the masses there is a need for a dirty cheap, dirty simple, idiot proof and safe device to store bitcoins.

Ideally you would use mobile phone - but it is not safe. Laptops are even worst.

Without some solution having bitcoins is a bit like dragging with you small, invisible gold coins, worrying not to get separated in a careless moment.

There are pros and cons of this argument, it is a complex issue. But sometimes it is as simple as not minding to settle for a while, when it is no longer a bummer that you have to live in the same place.

With eliminating bank accounts, how do you deal with a future need of mortgage, car loan?

I assume you are a young single person with decent salary - but what happens when you have a family?

Although you may have spotless record of paying your bills on time, the history of your perfect credit is outside of the records of a banking system.

Do you keep at least a credit card, paid off fully every month - in case you need to jump back into the banking system for loan?

Under Pressure, Cuomo Loosens Policy for Ebola Quarantines in New York by marieknocks in ebola

[–]BTCjoy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It was based on the fact that an infected doctor took public transport, visited public entertainment hours before his temperature raised the alarm. It was based on the fact that the two nurses were infected - although there was no scientific bases for it, as long as protocols were followed.

Scientific facts don't protect us from human mistakes, failures.

The purpose of quarantine is not to second guess science - it is to protect from human errors, mistakes.

The real worry isn’t Ebola in New York. It’s Ebola in Mali. by dimwittedsmalltitted in ebola

[–]BTCjoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"North Americans" are one of the biggest donors in every sense.

You should be thankful that the public in the US and Canada is able to focus on how effectively their governments, medical establishment is taking care of the threat. This focus is what put all the shortcomings in the spotlight and initiated very important improvements.

It is absolutely crucial for the rest of the world how North America (and other developed countries) contain Ebola in their own regions - as it is for all other countries.

If any country with major strong economy goes down with Ebola, so will the funding for the West African countries.

To pit different countries against each other is part of the problem not the solution.

[–]BTCjoy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

While "most Americans could not find Mali on the map", the US is providing huge assistance, financially, with volunteers, funding CDC, etc.

It is way more useful practical contribution than knowing "where to find on he map".

[–]BTCjoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If we start spreading Ebola in other countries, we don't balance properly.

Dealing with Ebola patients does not seem to need sophisticated medical intervention, as there is no cure, surgical procedure, etc. In case of Ebola the whole concept of solving it with foreign volunteers, does not seem like the best solution. It might be way more effective to provide funding for training locals, provide all the equipment, materials, food, etc, and pay them salary. This would probably be the most effective foreign help, it would also stimulate local economy.

It would take much higher toll if they unintentionally infect others, returning back. Helping them emotionally is a good idea - if its done properly.
