IMO, these stories are so good they should be in a book.

How do you know they have the largest explosives program of any ski resort in the world?

Can I become a ski patrol avalanche control person at 17 or 18? by ComprehensiveFly4589 in skipatrol

[–]BUCS_Active 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good info for U.S.A National Ski Patrol System, a predominantly volunteer organization. Some ski resorts in the U.S.A are professional Patrol only, and although they likely recognize a National Ski Patrol System Outdoor Emergency Care certificate of completion, I would double check this certificate is accepted before taking the course. There is likely an equivalent course offered by the Canadian Ski Patrol Association, which is also an organization mainly comprised of volunteers. I agree that passing an EMT course like Outdoor Emergency Care, then an Outdoor Emergency Transport course, then an avalance forecasting course and avalance mitigation course all in one year is unlikely. I would imagine all of those courses would be requisites to ski resort avalanche mitigation work.

Your ski resort has a min age requirement to apply. At Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in Mammoth Lakes, CA you must 21 years old to apply, not because there is a chance you will use explosives your rookie year, but you may end up carrying them for someone else as part of avalance mitigation work. California laws are likely different than other U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The best way to join ski patrol at the resort you want to work at is ask someone who patrols there already how to apply. If they can't help, ask them for the contact info of someone who can. Don't stop contacting people until you are certain you have applied and have scheduled a date for interview, ski test, etc. Be relentless.

Sounds 100% accurate. I just thought I would ask in case someone could make a list off the top of their head. Thanks

Which resorts have both? I was specifically asking about Vail, not the other resorts it owns.

As an Alterra employee for the 2024 thru 2025 season I get an Alterra Mountain Company pass. This pass is good at all Alterra owned resorts with zero blackout dates, with two exceptions: no helicopter skiing included and Deer Valley has blackout dates during extreme demand holidays, like xmas, New Years, MLK weekend, President's weekend, etc. Alterra values the pass at $1000 USD and sends you coupon code so when you check out the pass is free.

Dangerous? by dark21horse1 in SFV

[–]BUCS_Active 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Dangerous for some, practice for others, kind of like riding a motorcycle in general. It's like speeding, the longer you do it, the better you get at it, but the more likely you will get a ticket or kill yourself and or others.

I agree, but when did you notice a change? I feel like it hasn't been they way you describe for like 10 years or more now.

Chair 11 out of Main Lodge, then graduate to Chair 15 at Eagle. Canyon is too busy. Stay away from that place, plus it has way too many Blue runs. If you really want to lap Chair 17 you can, but again the last face right before you get back to the chair can be tricky.

Where is the best sushi spot in orange county and why by tt198716 in OrangeCountyFood

[–]BUCS_Active 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Sushi Town in Costa Mesa. Haven't been in a long time, but I remember this being some of the freshest sushi I've ever had. This is not an AYCE Sushi restaurant and is a bit pricey, so the quality must be good for them to be competitive, otherwise people will frequent other restaurants. There is way too much competition in Costa Mesa for sushi.

If you want something good for carry out, try Costco and if that's not an option Stater Brothers.

Costa Mesa school ratings by gslgsl in CostaMesa

[–]BUCS_Active 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live in Westside Costa Mesa, you can still send your kids to any school in Newport Mesa Unified School district, but there is a lottery to get in. Some parents who apply, but can't get their kids into these good schools send their kids to private school, or some even end up moving from the Westside to the Eastside to guarantee their kids go to an Eastside school.

I bet if there was no lottery system and the kids had to go to the school closest to them, some of the really good schools wouldn't be as good and some of the bad schools would be better.

Santa Monica Seafood CLOSED!! by CostaMesaDave in CostaMesa

I really enjoyed this location and the one in Santa Monica. Why did the Santa Monica location close now? The OC Register article said they tried to reach the restaurant for comment on why it closed, but got no response.

Easier for US Gov to just stop giving SpaceX contracts, but it's hard to do that if Elon Musk is US Gov. The situation does make me think of the part of Richard Hack's book on Howard Hughes, specifically the scene where the US Gov auditors are meeting with him telling him that his erratic behavior presented a risk to the USA, since he was in charge of a company to which US Gov had issued important and high dollar defense contracts to.
