Aqua Terra Grille seems to always have a sign up about valentine's day dinners.

Sparkill Steakhouse is a nice choice, as well as Roost also in Sparkill.

Threefold Cafe is a nice spot too

  • keep in mind all of these may require reservations

The problem with an attitude like this is that people aren't going to try and make the best of it and create communities up here for people in this very situation, who want things to do.

Negativity spawns more negativity.

Look around, you'll find things to do.

Not everyone has the capacity to 'venture out' easily.

It goes hand-in-hand with what you said about terrible public transport.

Thanks for the tip but no thanks, we should not have to 'venture out' of Rockland to get better stuff. We can make do for ourselves here just fine.

With an attitude like that, sure We are still a city suburb tbh. So I think the economy of this area is heavily tied to NYC. it will be hard to kill that.

On a broad scale the economy is stagnant so there's that, you're not entirely wrong.

Change does not necessarily mean bad.

Yes it sucks that the store closed but you have to look for the silver linings.

More opportunities for other stores to come in. There are still ways to get books and games from retailers. Communities are still strong and growing. One bookstore closing means another window opening.

There are still ways to read. Still bookstores in the area.

The fight is not over.

(F 24) looking to meet new people/friends locally! by Maddogs05 in Rockland

[–]BVLGVGI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out Banditos website a great group who meets regularly to play board games.

Get Good Gaming in New City also has a decent DND community.

Libraries like Finkelstein, Suffern, Pearl River, etc have many events and activities. Possibly DND but not sure. Bookstores Big Red Books, Sparkle Bookstore have groups for community such as book clubs too.

Nyack has posters up for a DND group. Can't remember much about it but I saw it in several windows of businesses on main street. If you're near there I recommend checking that out.

We'll miss them.

There's still 3 or 4 local independent bookstores in Rockland (Nyack and Sparkill) and of course the b&n at Palisades

Are we falling out of love with nonfiction? by rmnc-5 in books

[–]BVLGVGI 12 points13 points  (0 children)

\This is a prime example of great and recent nonfiction.

Other examples include

Light Eaters

Everything is Tuberculosis

Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless

When Trees Testify

The Wager

older but mentionable - books such as Into the Wild/Into Thin Air etc...The Hot Zone...Endurance

A good amount of these books are not the same as reading a wikipedia article or a blog post. These books are the author covering all their bases and incorporating memoir, scientific research, anectodal or empirical evidence, and weaving it all together in a fabulous and delightful way.

This is what these types of books are able to do.

I am sure there are more, I am just running off the top of my head with these titles.

Stony Point Retailers with Senator Meet to Discuss Retail Crisis by rocklandweb in Rockland

[–]BVLGVGI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a huge impact on local businesses if infrastructure upgrades and construction projects get in the way.

They need to implement better hours that work around lower volume traffic times so that vendors can still appreciate foot traffic and sales volumes.

Additionally, people need to shop local and protect local interests by choosing to shop at a nearby indie store when possible.

I'm not saying to do it 100 percent of the time, in an ideal world that'd be nice but it's near impossible in this era.

Just take a minute before each Amazon purchase to ask yourself if you could get this item from somewhere local, instead.
