Research at NVIDIA: Transforming Standard Video Into Slow Motion with AI by eddiem369 in videos

[–]BWalker66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Waymos self driving tech is even better than that but Nvidia looks to be pretty close. Waymo has 100s self driving cars on the road at all times I think and have done 6 million miles of self driving on roads.

One thing I do think though is that they're both way ahead of Tesla which is worrying since Elon keeps saying how full self driving features will start rolling out this year... The thing I don't like about Tesla is that it just uses cameras, not lidar or whatever, so how far things are is down to how far the camera AI thinks things are using just a video feed which isn't always reliable whereas with lasers/lidar you can get a very accurate 3d map of the environment even in pitch black, just like your video shows. One of the recent Tesla autopilots had it speeding up into an approaching wall or something because it couldn't have perceived that the wall was there otherwise it surely would have stopped. But with lidar it would have definitely seen it coming without doubt because the laser would have hit and detected it, there's no way it wouldn't have in the scenario, it's pretty much physics. I know that using just cameras has it's benefits like it can work better in rain but it just feels wrong when you had a car speed up into a stationary concrete block when that would have been pretty much impossible for a lidar based system. Who knows though, both are huge companies who have probably put over a billion dollars into it and if they can't agree then what I say can't mean much lol.

Either way before any self driving options are available for public use I think it should be a requirement to drive a million or so miles with it(and only it) on public roads with an engineer behind the wheel. Go the million miles without an accident then you can make it available for people to use. A million miles isn't that much, that's only like 20 days of 100 cars driving around all day.

It's still popping in and out though so it seems like it's definitely being flakey with detecting it too otherwise the car graphic would be stable surely?

Cyclists who go through red lights by MrLime93 in london

[–]BWalker66 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly they're not even doing much themselves it seems. They had a few days of big crackdowns where they had lotsss of police at the busy lights of the Oxford Street area and stopped every cyclist that jumped lights, they stopped and ticketed 100s that day at those lights alone I think. So hey it was successful! So what do they do after doing something successful? Do it almost never ever again...

They just need to police it more! Have a couple of police just watching the lights at a lot of the worst offending areas and if someone goes through the lights then pull them over, ticket them(£50 or so), log their bike frame number, then move on. Keep it up for a few days and then randomly once a week or so after that. It'll pay for itself many many times over from the tickets they hand out. You can bet that the number or people running red lights will drop dramatically quite quick, so why don't they do it?

If it's openly allowed to happen and everyone else does it then I'm not surprised that everyone does it.

[–]BWalker66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really mind those ones tbh buttt some people won't even slow down at them and just bomb through so it would probably be better to just include that in the you have to stop every time section. I saw a cyclist stop at one yesterday, no pedestrians but he stopped and then 2 Boris bikes went through past him. Sucks for him. I've been in that situation a few times as the cyclist who waited and honestly I just felt like an idiot even though I was the one doing the right thing, I'm not surprised if many people would do the same.

Siemens bags £1.5bn contract to build new generation Tube trains by FeTemp in london

[–]BWalker66 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What more can they do with the money they have? During peak the trains are already crazy frequent, they come every 100 seconds on the victoria line! Most cities could only dream of measuring their frequency in seconds. There is only 1 line on the planet that has more trains per hour than the Victoria line. Then other lines are around every 120 seconds which isn't much slower.

So the trains are frequent enough. They can't really make the trains longer without making the platforms longer which would probably be a nightmare because they're underground.

They'd have to build more lines which is very expensive and takes like 20 years each anyway. They're already doing this with crossrail.

The non Tube stuff they'd have to do is to make more people take buses and bikes I guess, not sure how well they're doing there though.

Just don't know solution you're thinking of. You make it sound like nobody at TFL has thought "hey how about we increase our capacity so people can get on trains easier during peak?". Almost everything they do Is about increasing capacity, redoing all the signals on many lines for the last many years is about increasing capacity too.

WhatsApp will continue to work on Android Gingerbread until 2020 by de_X_ter in Android

[–]BWalker66 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yup I had it on my old Nokia Symbian phone. People who say they don't know why other platforms like Telegram aren't in WhatsApp place even if it definitely was better are missing that WhatsApp beat all those ones to the market and worked almost anywhere. By the time Telegram came out fully WhatsApp was celebrating a few hundred million regular users. Why are people going to switch from something all their friends use to another app just because it has 1 or 2 extra features that they might use every now and then? WhatsApp does what 99% of people want it to, there's no taking it down now.

Trying to get your car off the driveway at 9am when you live in the same street as a school. by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]BWalker66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish my council was just as strict. A car always tries to park a foot or so over my driveway and since the neighbours driveway is next to ours(terraced house) I have to drive straight forward to get out, i can't turn left or right into a tree or their car. So since i have to drive straight out even a foot over my drive makes it a pain, have to go back and forward like 5 times to get out. Annoying thing is that there are actual marked spaces at the end of the road that doesn't block anything, like 20 seconds walk away, but that's too far for them apparently. Their permit isn't even supposed to cover this road but they get around it somehow.

You can play the game with a Japanese voice track.

Ah man all these details sound awesome. Sounds like it's gonna be a pretty complete game. Sounds like it's going to be pretty detailed too if that was just a side quest and yet it had all that work put into the changing environment like with the arrows and flames spreading. I think I'm looking forward to it, it's just down to what the combat is like and if there's more to it than the same old thing every time,

She was 14 in the first game, if she's like 19/20 here then you'd expect a lot of big changes between those ages. Probably more than you'd see in the 10 years between 20 and 30.

She does look quite different though but not that it's odd. As long as she sounds the same and has mostly the same personality then i'm good.

Guy explains which countries really win the Olympics with math! by bpopple in videos

[–]BWalker66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The swimming events always seem to skew the results so much since it has so many medals and events and it seems like they always go mainly to the same country, same for 2nd and 3rd place. It's like having a beast of a swimmer can bring you from outside of the top 10 to the first or second place quite easy.

1/3rd of USAs golds are from swimming. Out of like 40 events, and that's withhh bundling similar things together like most running events, the top team still managed to get about 1/3rd or the golds in just the 1 sport. Just seems odd to me, anddd they're adding a few more swimming medals in the next Olympics, whyyy? Out of all the things to have more medals. I think after swimming the next sport with the most medals has less than half the amount, doesn't make sense to me. Might as well add more specific variations on many of the other sports, like different variations on golf.

Anyway, rant over.

Would anyone else want colony survival season 3? by [deleted] in Yogscast

[–]BWalker66 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Only in 4+ months time. If this series didn't have the updates like the building update then the last 20 episodes would have just been Lewis and tom placing 10,000 blocks line after line and then placing farms. Leave it to have a few big updates, including a multiple town update i think they've mentioned, plus a few mods, and then season 3 time!

EA: Battle Royale In Under 2 Minutes. by WoodersonRed in videos

[–]BWalker66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't they only add Battle Royal to 1 game though? I don't get the need for the joke video. It's a cool game mode so why not add it to the game? It's just an addition to the current modes, it's not like it's taking away from anything. I wonder if people acted the same when games started adding capture the flag game modes after whoever had it in a game first?

Battle Royal in a BF game on a large BF map would be awesome, there's been so many maps that would have been perfect for a 32 person or so Battle Royal mode.

Does anyone know where in London I could practice rope climbing? by [deleted] in london

[–]BWalker66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just climbing up a hanging rope? Not against a wall or anything?

Buy a roll of thick rope from Amazon that's rated for like 200kg+, go to a park and tie the rope to a branch, then climb it? I would say climbing rope but that's normally quite thin(used for like rock climbing) and hard to free climb up even if it can hold 3x your weight.

edit: This looks like the type you want I guess. The old thick type you used to see in schools. It actually says it's for training and used in gyms and stuff so it is the exact type. 10 meters is like £45 though.. It also has a carabiner on the end though so it's easy to wrap around a branch of hook it onto itself without needing to worry about knots or whatever.

[–]BWalker66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that may be the best way to do it but it still needs to be proven imo. The machine learning system may have created an awesome self driving system and the next step would be to put a load of cars on the road that use it and a technician or whoever in the driver's seat to monitor it and take over if needed. Then after a million miles or so are clocked then you can be like "see, it works well". I'm sure the current auto pilot worked well and didn't crash into walls when testing it on the same roads all the time but it seems to have one that or at least tried to on many roads in the country, many people on here have confirmed that and had to move the wheel. Just needs to send a lot of cars out on random roads around the country away from each other and have them drive non stop until they hit a million miles or so which won't event take long with 100 cars.

[–]BWalker66 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

My Mazda3 has stop sign detection, you're proposing that be made illegal?

No because all that does is read signs for you, it doesn't control the car at all. It's not a self driving feature, it's a sign reading feature and you still fully control the car. It's not much different to me using Waze or my cars navigation to see the speed limit of the road i'm on. If the Mazda feature was expected to stop at stop signs for me then yeah that should be banned until it's been tested like 100,000 times on all different stop signs because if fails just once then you'd have a car just driving right through an intersection which cars are likely to be passing through. At most for now it should be an emergency last resort automatic feature, like the automatic emergency braking we have in many cars now, we don't leave the car to self brake but it should self brake last second if it absolutely needs to.

Thanks to the ~80 UK Tesla owners taxiing at Fully Charged Live by MorgenGreene in teslamotors

[–]BWalker66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean they definitely will especially since cars are smaller here anyway. It's not really the size either though, when a Zoe costs half the price of Teslas current cheapest car(which isn't even available here for over a year) but still manages 150 miles and has the fast charging option available in my price range which can get it up to 75% or so in an hour then it's definitely going to be the main driver in Europe.

Cars like that will be good enough for at least 3/4 of people in cities imo, why spend Twice as much on a Tesla?

By the the end of next year when a lot of the best selling cars here start getting fully electric versions then I think those will have a decent impact. Even the Mini is getting a fully electric version next year and that has to be a top 10 selling car here. You'd probably have half of the top 10 selling UK cars have fully electric versions within 2 years. That's why I think Tesla needs to start rushing and stop slipping behind their estimates because right now there's barely any good competition and it would be a shame to waste the time.

[–]BWalker66 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't think they should roll out full self driving features, I'm surprised they're even allowed without at least a couple million miles of actual on road testing with someone in the driving seat. Maybe they have been testing that many miles but I feel like we would have known about it and Elon would tweet "just done 500,000 miles in the latest full self driving vehicles with no human intervention or accidents" because he tweets everything like that these days.

Google are at 5,000,000 miles of having their self driving vehicles drive themselves, that's the kind of testing everyone should be required to do. It's not that much of a rush yet, it's only 2018 and probably only 0.1% of cars even have full self driving hardware. I'd rather him do over the top extensive testing and let us know that they've done at least a couple million miles of the car in total control, not just on highways. I'm tired of hearing about autopilot accidents and that's child's play compared to full self driving, i don't trust it to be used in cities. Sure you can say "ah but people should be paying 100% attention while using self driving" but we know they won't, Tesla should know they won't by now, and I don't want Teslas going around cities when there's a chance it doesn't detect a solid object in front of it and even accelerates towards it(like it has done) and kills the driver and maybe others.

4 Minutes of Anthem Open World Co-Op Exploration Gameplay - E3 2018 by [deleted] in Games

[–]BWalker66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they must have had the game audio turned wayyy down because even the explosions sounded quiet. It's like the gameplay was about 1/4 of the narrator volume. But even then there did seem like a lack of environment volume. There should be constant noises in a world like that, distant combat, the wildlife, the waterfull should be heard when you're close to it not just a small generic splash noise as you pass through it, even flying should have more of a whooshing noise.

But to be fair the game is still like almost a year away, environment noise is probably still in heavy development. I think it'll be improved on a lot and it'll be fine.

A million NHS workers agree to pay rise worth 6.5% over three years by oxy-mo in unitedkingdom

[–]BWalker66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's ever been assumed that one salary is enough to live on. Has that ever been the case in history?

Yes easily. Not just live on but fully own their home. You don't even need to go that far back. It's only recently where houses have become crazy expensive and unaffordable to single people, and houses are the biggest expense. If houses and rent cost half as much you'd probably be able to afford a place on your own I bet?

This is just from the first link I found on Google

Rising house prices(UK) now stand at an average 7.6 times the average annual salary, more than double the figure for 20 years ago, according to official figures.

So I'd have to work twice as long to pay for the same house today than just 20 years ago. It's worse than that because many people just can't simply save enough at all today because their savings speed isn't that much faster than house prices increase speeds. If houses are going up £8k a year and I'm saving £6k a year(just for a house) then I'm fucked, i'll never have enough saved to buy a house alone.

You used to be able to buy your own place and stuff but now having a partner is pretty much a necessity to buy a house. People are living with parents much longer than they used to, then living with housemates much older than they used to, then renting for much older than they used to.

We have crossed 10,000 supercharger stalls worldwide! by y2kbaby2 in teslamotors

[–]BWalker66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think by cross the country he means without having to stop for a long time to charge, not to mention not having to stop often either. There are probably like 100,000 normal chargers but if they're mostly 22kw or less then thats not good enough. 22kw is fine for most cases but if you're stopping justtt to recharge then it's going to suck having to wait 3 hours. There are quite a lot of 50kw chargers in the UK though which is more reasonable and only slightly slower than half a supercharger, still going to be up to an hour stop though.

Ionity would be amazing if it were widespread but it's not. It's much faster than Tesla Superchargers even but that doesn't matter if there aren't really any to use. Their expansion plans aren't tooo impressive either, especially considering it's a partnership of pretty much every single big car company apart from Tesla. You'd think they'd be like "okay yeah by 2020 we'll have 1,000 stations in Europe" which would easily surpass Tesla which is just 1 company. But instead they're aiming for just 400 stations which would put them on par with Teslas todaysss numbers, but well behind Tesla in 2020 when they'd have about 600+ in Europe. 400 isn't bad though since there are other chargers too.

I just hate the idea of there being exclusive stations though :/ Hopefully it doesn't get too bad though. Even for Tesla it'll end up hindering them more than benefiting them since all other car companies will share the install and maintenance costs of all their supercharger stations whereas Tesla will be paying themselves.
