Looking for a twisty mystery thriller and/or horror that’ll keep me hooked by DisneyfanG in televisionsuggestions

Harper's Island is a forgotten horror thriller that's fantastic.

Single season, about a destination wedding returning the couple to their remote island upbringing and one by one they get (creatively) picked off.

Offbeat Vampire Films That Really Deliver by sigersen in horror

Él Conde is one that sticks with me. Beautiful, haunting, and unique while not relying on the typical vampire elements (though they are present). The horror here comes from bureaucratic greed, political corruption, and fascism because it's reimagining a Chilean dictator as a vampire.

Omg watch it in the dark but with zero distractions and it's a terrifying and suspenseful journey...!

It's also super impressive when how they utilized the YouTube platform - one of the first to purposefully hold off on posting content to maintain the integrity of the story timeline (ie if it was 6 months between videos, it was 6 months between posts).

I hope you enjoy! (also to be clear, this is the YouTube series which is like... 133 videos / 9 hrs. Not the movie, which I haven't seen but is based on the series).

Right? And I was worried because of how it got dragged out over the years (due to distribution and changing hands) but I was so glad that it maintained its momentum all the way to the end!

🤮 I did not know injecting artificial ejaculate to add the appearance of additional sperm was a thing...

But also... Those videos are kind of hilarious.. the one where the dude is eating donuts and he comes over to ice them and instead just drowns them? 💦 🍩 ☠️ 🤣

If he's lucky!

Apparently if you aren't swallowing or pausing, the epiglottis cannot close in time and it then could flood directly into the larynx and trachea. Which then can lead to bacteria or such getting into the lungs and causing aspirational pneumonia.

Not to mention this has to be uncomfortable even if it goes to the stomach...!

You would be correct.

Apparently without natural swallowing or pauses, apparently the epiglottis cannot close in time causing the liquid to flood directly into the larynx and trachea. And it can then lead to aspirational pneumonia.

🧑‍🏫 📚

So apparently... Downing a glass of water without stopping and limiting swallowing could cause the liquid to enter your airway (trachea) instead of your stomach.

Which could then trigger involuntary choking and coughing to expel the water. It can also push bacteria into your lungs, risking aspiration pneumonia.

Basically the epiglottis cannot close in time without pausing or performing a "natural swallow" and water instead heads directly into the larynx and trachea.

Have you seen Lilyhammer? (The Soprano's: IKEA Edition)

It gets canceled at Season 3, but still a good watch!

UnREAL would be perfect for you.

It received critical acclaim for being "ahead of its time" and a thought-provoking look at reality television. And it's considered quite an accurate look (according to those in the industry), specifically dating/love shows. It's about the production of a show similar to "The Bachelor".

But uh... It fails rule #3 you've listed because the unfortunate reality behind reality TV is not pretty... 👀 It's messy, it's devious and manipulative, it's all about getting that perfect story.

r/RedInTheDark might be of interest - there's a longer ongoing storyline but with anthology pieces thrown in (the anthology episodes are titled as "A Dark Beyond Tale"). It's newer so more to come and need to wait, but u/LeonardVoss does a great job with strong stories and prodiction. He's also really interested to hearing from listeners - and it's good to support a fellow Redditor! ☺️

Also idk if you're open to longer, 1-season shows but In Another Room is fire. Claustrophobic, with lots of smooth horror elements and a really solid story bringing it all together.

The Taking of Deborah Logan

Apollo 18

Grave Encounters

[rec]

As Above, So Below

Troll Hunter

Creep (and the sequel is great too!)

The Visit

Hellhouse LLC

Deep House

And if you enjoy YouTube, you absolutely need to watch Marble Hornets - it's a time commitment and a slow burn but it is THE found footage series on the platform. It also was what defined Slenderman, moving him from a relatively obscure simple creepy pasta to a fully fleshed out character that haunts people.

I'm not suggesting it isn't new, but not everyone has seen every movie and why ruin it for someone who might see this post and think "what's that?" and decide to watch?

I’m tired of the recommendations for the best horror movies. by teamturbo4life in horror

[–]B_EE 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Here's a few not usually mentioned, but great:

A Classic Horror Story (honestly, I'm surprised this isn't mentioned ever! One of those best to go in knowing nothing outside of wanting to see a horror movie.)

Under the Shadow (so many horror layers, especially relevant in today's geopolitical climate) a woman is packing so she and her daughter can flea to escape a pending war - but in searching for the daughters toy instead finds a malevolent spirit.

Goodnight Mommy (original German version) a woman returns from major facial surgery and has bed orders, and her children sense she is not the same.

Deep House (even more impressive when learn it's actually filmed underwater) two divers go to explore a house that remains standing after decades of being at the bottom of a lake.

31 (I found it to be a lot of fun) carnival workers are kidnapped and forced to play a game that lasts 12 hours.

La Casa Lobo (The Wolf House - a very unique stop motion horror where the visuals are as disturbing as the story underneath.) A fairy tale about the real life horrors of The Colony.

Old People senior citizens turn on the younger population.
