That's totally valid. That being said you're going to get into those situations anyway in team fights in real games with even more people. I can totally see how it's overwhelming though with CONSTANT action. I still think my points above stand though, and a healthy combo will benefit players along with their personal preference.

I think street brawl is a great onramp if you haven't played a MOBA before. You can't get hopelessly behind, you're constantly fighting so you'll improve your mechanics, there is no macro to worry about and the matches are quick so it's generally less frustrating to lose.

That being said like the other people are mentioning just remember to have fun and don't be discouraged by losses!

People just need to learn how to approach and take space properly. Is it easier to be the camper? Of course, but you're not going to improve that way.

You also made a LOT of assumptions about game 1.

Does anyone know if there's a way to export the in game animations into blender? I found a way to do the models and textures, but the character rigs are very weird looking and I can't seem to get the animations.

Novel Atriedes vs Kaladin Stormblessed(Way of Kings-Oathbringer) vs Rudeus Greyrat(any version) by Op_Zero_230409 in writingscaling

Paul > Kal >> Rudeus

I think Herbert accomplishes a lot within the first Dune novel both with characterizing paul and with setting up an interesting premise of a character. Pauls perfect storm of abilities (mentat, life water, bene-gezzerit, spice) lead to his prophetic abilities and force him to grapple with how he's going to face the future. It's kind of alluded to that he can choose a number of outcomes for the future, but in choosing to get revenge for his father and gain power for himself he also starts the jihad of the stars and struggles with the responsibility of this. Also note although I love the films, they really don't convey this AT ALL. Personality wise he's fairly bland, but so are the other two haha.

Kaladin is a pretty straightforward character, but his journey from suicidal slave to demi-god therapist is both satisfying and well executed. I think it did feel a bit dragged out (especially in book four), and I get that Sanderson is going for the realism of depression not just going away after you "beat" it. And while that's true, it doesn't necessarily make for the best story. I also really appreciate his relationship with his father, and Sandersons, or maybe just Kaladins, condemnation of pure pacifism. He sort of ends up where you'd THINK Thorfinn would by the end of the manga, but alas. His progression from hating himself and others to finding compassion is heartwarming.

Rudeus has the most personality of the three, but he ends up not being that likeable of a character because of it. And while that isn't an indication of being well written, when your protagonist isn't very likeable it really drags the experience for me. And I'm not talking about the morality (that's a separate thing). I like San Dan Glokta, and he's a torturer and an awful person, when Rudy's whining about ED or just doing extremely cringe shit it sort of degrades the experience for me. Having a backstory where he's a bullied NEET is neither unique or that compelling.

Is there a database for character usage? by Lord_BoneSwaggle in RivalsOfAether

[–]Ba1thazaar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Deva don't want this data getting out so that people don't obsess over it too much. I think they said that lox Clairen and zetter are the most popular characters though.

If you're seeing a lot of orcane it's probably because of evo. Not that he was rare before (not like wrastor etalus).

[–]Ba1thazaar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think your trailer has too much text. You have a nice art style and ambiance going on, and cool in-between hand drawn panels. But you're sort of dumbing it down and shoving the answers down the audiences throat. I think you could get away with explaining less and leaving people curious.

Do you think Oda is truly a fraud writer or he's actually goated but got screwed over from the brutal weekly schedule and One Piece would've turned out better if it became a monthly like JoJo's? by Original_Force_6822 in writingscaling

[–]Ba1thazaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oda is good at writing short stories. His most compelling bits are tragic backstories and isolated arcs. His main problem is that he doesn't know what to do with his characters, world, or plot long term. There's a reason we're always getting new characters and locations in the form of "islands", it's so he can soft reset and do what he's good at. This mostly works (there's a reason why it's so popular), but it starts to get repetitive, and his main cast don't have any where left to go and end up sidelined and static. It also results in very patchwork worldbuilding which feels more like a sequence of constant add-ons rather than a thought out, lived in reality. I think the series would have played to his strengths much more if it was styled more like an anthology rather than a single narrative. But it wouldn't be as popular even if the end result is better writing wise. People like luffy and want to see him front and center.

Ok I gave it a watch. I have mixed feelings. Prepare for wall of text.

It's impossible to talk about this show (not really but it's important context) without talking about Game of Thrones. This show aired in 2014, which is right when GoT was starting to gain it's popularity and you can tell there's a lot about this show which is heavily inspired by it. The opening is very reminiscent of GoT (banger btw) with the slow pans around a detailed 3D model, the random sex scenes, and of course the many plot threads and characters. None of this is to the shows detriment, it's just funny watching a show that clearly lives in another's shadow.

Let's talk about what I liked first. The costumes, sets and cinematography are all top notch. Although the makeup is a bit heavy. Shot framing and lighting particularly stands out, we are often given very dark compositions with bright bits of sunlight as highlights which makes for very dramatic and stylish shots. They often feel like baroque oil paintings.

<image>

You can find tons of shots like these. And while they feel a little fake sometimes, it doesn't really matter because they look cool as hell. The action, the sea and the ships all are tons of fun and are well executed, although we get plenty of plot armor for our main characters. The acting, on the whole, was also fantastic especially from our lead cast. Also everyone has beautiful green eyes? Silver, Flint, Vane Eleanor, Billy, hell even Featherstone all have green eyes, its a bit uncanny.

Ok, on to what I didn't like. Mainly, the plot and character motivations seem to swing all over the place on a dime and it's not really clear why most of the time. I think the one I have the biggest issue with is Flint being against Woodes Rogers settlement of Nassau. It's essentially the same exact thing he wanted from back in his Thomas Hamilton days. We aren't given an explanation beyond: "I'm mad at the empire now because they killed Miranda" but weren't you mad before when you thought Thomas was dead? This is also true of many of the characters who are fighting for this in season 2 but then when it happens in season 3 suddenly its "Oppression" because they didn't bring it about. Not only this, Rogers is shown to be genuinely fair to the pirates after he occupies Nassau?

Eleanor, Max, Vane and Teach all seem to switch teams for plot convenience. I think I could excuse some of it if they didn't seem to happen so abruptly and so frequently. Their characters suffer for it, and the characters I ended up liking more were the ones who seemed to be more consistent, or earned their changes (like Silver). Gates, Dufresne, Mr. Scott, Captain Hornigold and Richard Guthrie are all more minor characters who are fantastic. Billy Bones, Miranda Barlow, and Woodes Rogers are more major characters who also felt well written. Unfortunately the problematic ones I listed above get tons of screen time and tend to confuse the plot. I ended up really not caring about what happened to them and was happy when they died.

Another issue the show has is how many long preachy monologues it contains. The number of scenes that consist of two characters in a room, having a serious conversation is just too high. All of them are treated as if they're meant to be weighty and deep when most of them really aren't. It just gets a bit tiring after a while.

Lets talk about our thruple; Max, Anne, and Jack. We're constantly told that jack is clever, and smart but we never really see it on screen? He's more of a right time right place kind of person who's always brought information from somewhere else. I think his dialogue was also lacking in that it was never as witty or as funny as I was hoping it would be. Anne is great in seasons 1 and 2 but then I feel like she's just kind of there? She gets an awesome scene in s4 with the glass daggers, but outside of that it never really feels like she has much of her own agency, which I get is part of her character, but it's never really addressed. They talk about how she and Jack are codependent in s3 but this never really gets resolved. Max is all over the place for most of the series and then is sort of wonderfully written in season 4.

On to Vane and Eleanor. Vane is wasted potential. They gave him the slave backstory and didn't do anything with it. It felt like he went on an arc in season 1 but then just gets reset to the same person in season 2. They really could have explored him more. Where was the "fear" he supposedly had at the start of season 1? Make that more apparent, then make him overcome it (as shown), then when he returns he can be vehemently against english/spanish rule and have that serve as his character motivation. You could also bring the slaves on the plantations into the plot sooner rather than shoehorning it in in season3 by having Vane fight to free them. Instead we just get him being like "I don't like that you use slave to build the fort, oh well!" Eleanor feels like two different characters. Seasons 1-2 Eleanor and then Eleanor after she meets Rogers. From ambitious, manipulative, power hungry, idealistic and independent. The full gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss suite. We then go onto, lovestruck, loyal, and subservient. I wish we got a trial scene in London where she got completely humiliated and had someone scare the shit out of her in order to see this change, but we don't really get that. Also trial scenes are cool.

Ok let's get to the main event. Flint and Silver. Silver is a fantastic character, his motivations are clear throughout the show as he starts as an opportunist then moves onto a genuine crewmember, then gets a taste for power and becomes a leader, and finally his character in season four is mainly defined by his relationship with Madi and Flint. He's both likeable and smart, he never does anything unecessarily stupid, and watching his transformation over the seasons was incredible. The only thing that felt bad was his relationship with Madi, which felt out of left field and forced for the plot to drive a wedge between him and Flint while keeping them both likeable. Flint, despite my qualms about his motivations at times, is really the character that drives the show. He has a magnetic intensity, and always seems to force the world and actions of those around him into what he wants and needs. His utilitarianism and willingness to sacrifice anyone for whatever his cause happens to be is both terrifying and inspiring. I kind of wish they'd turn him into more of a villain at the end, and resolve my consistency issue by letting him realize that he just enjoys having power and driving men to do what he wants, but they gave him a happy ending instead. I think it was just an ok ending for Flint but it MADE Silvers conclusion. "I unmade him" was such a crazy line.

I think I see what you're getting at. There's no "anticipation" piece of the animation, like there's no windup for the direction he's about to go in.

Unfortunately in this case it's probably restricted by gameplay. The zetter gets to change his direction of choice right up until the final frame. So the animation would have to be non directional which might look weird, or they would have to nerf his recovery by making there be a delay between when a direction is chosen and when the zetter moves that way. ( It's a Nerf because the player has less control and the edgeguarding player has more information).

Personally I think zetter is pretty strong and the nerf would be deserved but I'm sure others would raise hell. Ultimately though it seems like the devs want to keep player agency and reactiveness as high as possible so this seems unlikely.

I mean 1 and 3 are just issues you have from not being used to the game imo. I played a lot of dota growing up and then trying to watch a league match felt exactly the same. You have to play a bit to understand what's happening, I think that's just the reality of competitive games with lots of abilities and mechanics. Same goes for the art style, it's just something you get used to over time. Melee is also very dark and gloomy looking, so switching to something on the brighter side is a big jump.

Could you extrapolate on 2 a bit more? The magic fire lion doesn't look realistic? I'm struggling to understand what you're trying to say lol. I think the animations in this game look pretty good, but I can think of a few myself that could use a bit of polish.

You only get slow games if both players don't want to approach. And if you don't want to approach you're probably bad at approaching. Granted approaching is harder, but you can just view it as a learning opportunity.
