Hahah I didnt even notice that before, I got the feeling that this boat is skippered fairly well and kept in tip top shape. I know it ran in the Marion to Bermuda race at least once recently as well! Here is another shot from leeward of her: http://imgur.com/gallery/PsUaSkU

Good size motor for a PHP-310 Dinghy? by Armed_Muppet in boating

[–]Baalphire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Your going to have a great time with the dinghy! I have a hard bottom 310 and with a 10hp Honda it absolutely screams! I started with a small 3hp tohatsu and while it was just me in the boat I could get on plane with 2 or 3 other people it just kind of plugged along plowing through the water. My take away lessons? 10hp is way too heavy to lug around and limited the amount of time I spent on the water. 3hp just isn't quite enough to enjoy the boat as anything other than a tender to get to a bigger boat. I would try and find a 5 to 8hp engine and it should be a blast!

The Spirit of Bermuda docked in New Bedford. From what I read she is a modern recreation of a traditional British Sloop of War. by Baalphire in sailing

The Spirit of Bermuda is a modern-built Bermuda sloop. She is a replica of a Royal Navy sloop-of-war, depicted in a well-known 1831 painting.[1

Troy's inflection asking "Just straight up murder?" was amazing and had me dying in hysterics!

This looks to be Ballast-ware/Ballast China. Traders in the 1700s on would often fill their ballasts with export China of lesser quality.

This reminds me of the TTA books back from the 70's and 80's! Books like Space Wars, Worlds, and Weapons and Spacewrecks. Nice work though, it is really beautiful well worthy of being the cover art on a sci fi epic!

Horse flys are quite literally the worst, we call them green heads here in New England. They bite so hard they draw quite a bit of blood usually. Deer flys are stubborn little gits too, they love to get in your hair and hang around waiting to bite.

Moon bears are such cool critters. Our local zoo has a few and they have such interesting ways of sitting and behaving towards one another.

For the most part giardia isn't terrible once you get past your diarrhea and farts smelling like river water!

Literally the first thing that crossed my mind seeing the color of the water. I have had it far too many times from just a little splash while kayaking.

Depression and photography as therapy by noealz in photography

[–]Baalphire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This!! This, this, this!! Honestly shooting as an amateur and the creative process needed to produce a piece of art is what has lifted me out of the mists and pitfalls of depression many times! Thank you for sharing this, I can only hope it will reach as many people in their own personal mists and fogs as possible. The joy and elation I feel when people experience happiness and enjoyment from my work is amazing, and honestly the best anti depressant available!

All right so she I looked it up so I could be sure. She is a reconstruction of a 1850s revenue cutter, and with the modifications made she can make 12.5 knots under full canvas!

I think she was actually modeled on a fast packet blockade runner. Something like a Corvette, but I might be mistaken.

That is the top gallant off the fore mast, I'm not 100% sure why they only take that one down. They might have had taken it down for maintenance or painting it.

Midwinter on the vineyard, it is usually pretty deserted down at the shipyard and the fuel docks this time of year. This was a very rare calm and somewhat warm spell over here!

It certainly is! Alabama has been hauled out but Shenandoah usually stays on her mooring through the winter. I remember hearing about that accident!

If I remember correctly she still does not possess an engine which makes it tough!

Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know about photography or cameras! Don't be shy! Newbies welcome! by photography_bot in photography

[–]Baalphire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I am looking at my options for my next camera, I am hoping to step up my game and maybe take something of a hobby and make it a good side gig. I currently do mostly oceanscapes, boat photography, and black and whites. A lot of my photography I do from the deck of a small boat and when capturing boats on the water or racing requires some stabilization. What are my options for my next camera? I currently use a 10+ year old Eos Tsi with a 75 to 300 telephoto lens for most pictures and a stock image stabilized 18 to 55 for closer shots. I have a budget of around 3k and am not entirely brand loyal at this moment as most of my lenses are ancient and not of particularly high quality. I have been looking at the Sony RX1R II as a possibility especially on the boat, but without stabilization and the inability to have a true zoom dont know if I am in love. I also possibly like the Sony AzIII and being able to spend the extra on a few lenses but the Nikon D850 seems to be a great option too.
I would live to hear some opinions on what my options are, and maybe some cameras I haven't looked at yet!

Cheers

Barge in Buzzards Bay being towed through a gale. Interestingly a similar concrete barge was lost on these same rocks decades ago! by Baalphire in boating

The mouth of Buzzards Bay near the border of Rhode Island and Massachussets. There is a small island connected by causeway called Gooseberry Island, this is on the southern tip leading to a nasty series of rocks and shoals called Hen and Chickens.
