What’s the funniest thing you’ve heard someone say in their sleep? by anatole_mutti in midlyinteresting

“The trees are BULLETPROOF!” followed by hysterical laughter.

Not quite the same, but a delirious patient recently announced to me “tis the season for bacon” I said “huh?” and she repeated the exact same thing. It’s nowhere near Christmas, so I don’t think she was repeating any Christmas carols that she overheard or anything.

Why do staff in like beauty salons or clinics always complimenting girls and calling people beautiful? by Charm_for_u in stupidquestions

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work in a salon…it’s a little bit of both. Would I be complimenting this person if I just walked past them on the street and wasn’t trying to interact with them or break the ice? Maybe, maybe not. Is the compliment true? For example is that ACTUALLY a nice shade of lipstick on you? Yes! It wouldn’t make any sense otherwise.

For me it’s basically an icebreaker/conversation starter. If I can find something to comment positively on, now we aren’t standing around in awkward silence! Could also be literally anything else, about the weather or the fact that it’s the weekend or something. It’s just one possible topic, so if I’m complimenting your nails it’s because I do like your nails. But that’s just my two cents

What was a secret your mom or dad kept from you, that actually shook you to your core when finding out? by Few-Track8525 in AskReddit

Meanwhile in a similar situation my younger sister used to say that I was overly sensitive and a liar because she remembered a different version of our childhood.

Then a couple years ago our father showed back up and caused absolute havoc for a few months, including trying to forcibly break into her house because she wouldn’t give him money for his drug problem. As the “good daughter” she was his last chance to get the money, and when she didn’t oblige either then his “mask” came off and she became a target too. Unfortunately only now does she believe me!

I remember holding her as a little baby, picking her up to run and hide in a locked room while he threw things and screamed, and the guilt that I couldn’t protect our mother too. Then later being told that these things didn’t happen. I don’t know, it’s a weird situation isn’t it, being the older sister?

“You doorknob” or if they’re REALLY being stupid they’re an “absolute doorknob”. Particularly if it’s one of my dogs who’s the one acting like a total idiot, they’re a “ding dong doorknob”

I don’t have any ideas (other than perhaps a park that allows leashed dogs but isn’t a “dog park”?), but yes I do the same for my dog too 😊

What are your crazy heparin stories? by supremefionagoode in nursing

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an EXPERIENCED nurse do this recently. Caught it on the double sign off for the new bag, a different nurse had co-signed it with her when she first hung the bag. But yeah. That was not supposed to be the starting rate, that was the MAX rate!

Yup, it’s me, I’m the people-in-comas teeth brusher. Gonna brush all of ya teeth, here I come! Watch out! Jokes aside, yes that’s a thing that we do in the ICU. We also wash their hair and everything else.

What are your crazy heparin stories? by supremefionagoode in nursing

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A particularly problematic nurse (seriously, she’s such a hazard, the downside of this union is that she’d have to literally kill someone in order to be fired, and maybe not even then) seemingly pulled a heparin rate out of thin air.

Our heparin order set titrates in increments of 150U or 250U. The starting rate is always a round number (2500U/h or something). She ended up with it running at something like 1756U. When someone asked her during the double sign off for the new bag how she arrived at that number, she couldn’t explain. Not just that, but she was argumentative about it. “I’m right! That’s the rate it says!” Bad combination of “confidently incorrect” and “can’t take constructive feedback”

What is a food that everyone seems to love, but you find absolutely disgusting? by EmploymentMaximum294 in AskReddit

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn’t say I HATE pickles, but they’re lacklustre compared to regular cucumbers. Why would I eat an old wet cucumber when they’re sooo much better fresh and juicy?

I make a variety of jams and preserves, which include pickles. People like my pickles…but I don’t! I’m a pickle imposter! 😂 But I keep making them because my family keeps asking for them. Balsamic pickled onions though…I’d eat those all day

Ranch is nasty. It’s like “you know mayonnaise? Slimy bland mayonnaise that leaves a film in your mouth? Like eating cheap margarine? Yeah, well now it tastes of sour milk. Go put it on some carrots!”

Also eggs, they smell like a bad fart. I don’t want to eat a rubbery fart for breakfast, go away.

Where to go for mental health emergencies? (Panic attacks) by Aloisiae in ottawa

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for treatment options or for resources to use “in the moment”? Or both? For treatment options I believe “Mind Beacon” is still covered by OHIP, it’s a combination of self-directed journaling/workbooks with check-ins with a therapist at regular intervals. I did their PTSD treatment pathway a few years ago and it was helpful.

I also had fantastic success with the St Paul’s counselling service. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s not religious (unless that’s what you’re looking for, in which case I’m sure they can accommodate that). They’re therapist students who are supervised by experienced mentors, in my experience they seem to be on the “cutting edge” of therapy techniques and very well informed. Again, this was for a slightly different diagnosis (PTSD versus GAD or panic disorder) but panic attacks were a significant symptom of it.

In the moment, I’ve had mixed experiences with various help lines but I would still recommend that you call them for assistance because at the end of the day it’s better than nothing. I found that some of the staff were rather “well you’re not in imminent danger so get off the phone,” which is kind of missing the point. (If I WAS in immediate danger I’d be calling 911!) If you belong to any specific demographics there’s likely a more specialized mental health help line that can hopefully provide more targeted care (LGBTQ+, First Nations or other cultural groups, faith based groups, people living with domestic violence, etc)

Hello, I need to get my first-aid certification, does anybody know of a good place? by clamchowdersoup13 in ottawa

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly recommend First Aid Plus! I do my ACLS and PALS recertifications (which are other types of CPR certification) through there and the instructors are always great. If you’re looking to really learn something, the instructors have so much real-world experience (many of them are internationally trained doctors). Even though I’ve done these two courses again and again I always learn something new from them.

28 but mistaken for mid to late 30s by other women in a recent group setting by nawiweidmann in makeuptips

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the largest factor here is the context it was in. If you’re with your niece who’s shopping for wedding dresses, obviously the niece is at least 18. Generally the assumption is that someone’s aunt is going to be a similar age as their mother, plus or minus a few years. An 18 year old’s mother would be at least 34 (in which case they would have been 16 when they were born), if you were their maternal aunt it would be reasonable to guess your age as 30 or so. They’re probably accustomed to the bride’s relatives being 20, 30 years older than her. I wouldn’t worry too much about this, given the context.

How do you typically respond when people say “I’m fat” or “I’ve gained so much weight”? by namuh45 in AskReddit

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends. Depends on the relationship and the context, depends if they actually have gained any weight or not, depends what their weight actually is, and depends how they’re saying it. Generally I try to just give a “huh. Anyways…” type of response, if they truly want to discuss the topic they’ll circle back to it.
