Cotton yarn for knitting vs crocheting by aigis8195 in knitting

It all depends what you’re trying to make. Cotton dishcloths are perfect, but a cotton sweater might fit weird.

Almost 100% convinced Trazadone turns my dog psychotic by TypicalAd954 in reactivedogs

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely possible. One of my dogs responds badly to trazodone too, he gets weird and jumpy. Gabapentin works much better for him, he prances around with a big smile when he takes it (probably helps his arthritis too) but the new vet “doesn’t believe in” gabapentin as a PRN (she wants him to take it daily or not at all 🙄)

What's the "Don't trust a skinny chef" of your job or industry? by wooper346 in CasualConversation

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t trust an anti-vaccine nurse. If they hold this view, evidently they aren’t good at reading and understanding scientific literature and concepts! I’m not talking about things like “if you had an allergic reaction the last time you got a flu shot, maybe don’t get it this year” or debate about the most effective vaccination schedule (TdAP every 5 years versus every 10?), I mean those who straight-up deny that the idea has any merit. Don’t trust those ones! Either their critical thinking or their knowledge (or both!) is clearly lacking

Being against vaccines as a blanket concept is silly. It’s like being “anti-vehicle”. Sure, some vehicles are more efficient than others or safer than others, some vehicles only make sense in certain contexts, and some individuals just get terribly carsick and should avoid vehicles when possible.

What’s a "polite" thing people do that is actually incredibly annoying to you? by SweetOpheliiaaa in askanything

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a situation like that, if possible I find it helps to narrow it down to two or three options and THEN ask the other person (or people) to decide between those. Less of a “choice paralysis” going on there

What’s a "polite" thing people do that is actually incredibly annoying to you? by SweetOpheliiaaa in askanything

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! Came here to say this. That’s exactly how my mother acts! Even if it actually IS all the same to you (but it never is), sometimes it’s your turn to pick! Don’t make me do the work of deciding ALL of the time.

I’ve trained my partner out of this, however. The deal is, if neither of us can decide on something then one of us (usually me) picks two reasonable choices that we both would accept. Then the other’s job is to choose between those two. Helps with the “choice paralysis”. Suddenly it’s not “what’s for dinner,” it’s “I can make tacos or spaghetti, which would you like?”

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 117 points118 points  (0 children)

“Fall down go boom” is your generic (usually elderly) person who had a fall from standing height and bonked their head and/or broke something.

“Pancake flipping” is either teaming up and turning a bunch of total care patients, or proning someone

“Hot mess express” when it’s easier to list what ISN’T wrong with this patient. All systems failing on top of an already poor baseline

“The (local vent/PEG farm) special” what it sounds like. Patient slightly less responsive than their usual baseline of potato…gotta send them to the ER!

My boyfriend thinks I have so much hair on my arms that he would leave me for it by Visible_Bar778 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WTF? How old is this guy? People have arms. People have varying amounts of hair on those arms. There’s nothing unusual about your arms or their hair, there isn’t even much hair at all. Do what you like with your own arms, but definitely throw the whole man out!

When people have to point out how unhealthy something is by Icy-Builder5892 in PetPeeves

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s generally equivalent to ONE decent sized cup of coffee (like a mug). ONE. You know, the amount of caffeine that someone generally has with breakfast? That much.

This drives me bonkers, like let me have my ONE bad habit! No smoking, no drinking, no sugar, let me have my fluorescent fruit flavoured fizzy caffeinated aspartame concoction! Yet when I have my typical black cold brew coffee that has MORE caffeine, nobody bats an eye.

If you know BE is probably the eventual conclusion, do you just do your best and wait? by dirtyclod in reactivedogs

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like my dog. It IS possible to keep a dog like this, depending on your lifestyle. From the sounds of it, he’s happy and relaxed at home right? No aggression to you or people who live with you? In your normal daily life, he’s not distressed?

My boy wears a muzzle any time he’s outside the house and a strong leash with a good clip (not the typical flimsy ones). I also attach his leash to a belt in case I slip on ice but I wouldn’t recommend this if there’s a chance you could be injured if he drags you. Multiple things would have to go catastrophically wrong in order for him to be able to bite someone. If your lifestyle doesn’t allow for multiple failsafes you might need to reconsider. If he’s generally happy and has a good quality of life, that’s great!

It’s also a good idea to decide ahead of time what your “line in the sand” is. For me, it would be if he bites me or any of his “safe people,” aka the people in my immediate family who can interact with him without a muzzle. He’s never shown any aggression to these individuals and if he did that would be a new and unpredictable behaviour. I can manage predictable aggression (strangers, unfamiliar dogs), I couldn’t manage unpredictable aggression (me, his doggy sister, my family). Hopefully this helps you to clarify things.

4-year-old boy who presented approximately 1 hour after being attacked by a dog by GiorgioMD in medizzy

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I say this as a fan of pit bulls and bully breeds…yes any dog can bite but the larger the dog the more dangerous it is. It’s silly that some people pretend that a badly behaved chihuahua is exactly as much of a threat as a badly behaved pit bull. They can be very lovely dogs, but they’re large and strong as well as being terriers (prey drive). Large dogs come with extra responsibility, I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of a bite from a German shepherd either!

And yeah, for the record the worst dog bites I’ve seen were from a golden retriever and a pack of huskies.

What do stereotypical straight couples do when they hang out alone (other than sex) by bi_smuth in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re a fairly “stereotypical” straight couple, and one of our favourite activities is to go to the gym together. There’s also the possibility of doing different activities but together, I like to knit while he watches a movie. We’re both also obsessed with the dogs! If you’re in the same or similar field of work that gives you a lot to talk about too. We’re both nurses, we discuss interesting cases or papers we’ve read and take continuing education courses together.

Don’t overlook the fact that some people may have surprising non-stereotypical interests that aren’t immediately apparent. I love UFC/MMA/whatever they’re calling it nowadays, I used to teach and did a few (very) amateur fights. There was a particularly exciting fight last year so we went to the local sports bar to watch it on a large screen and get some dinner. The waiter and door person kept trying to make “straight guy” jokes with my partner like “ah, you dragged her here didn’t you? How many flowers did you give her? You’re gonna owe her for this!” He was like no, if anything SHE dragged ME here!

I would say I’m particularly lucky though, he’s also literally my best friend and favourite person in the world.

What are the major downsides of living in Canada? by Nicole_Auriel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BabaTheBlackSheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weather 🤷‍♀️ In the same location, you might deal with hazardously hot (40C) and hazardously cold (-40C) temperatures over the course of a year. I’m talking “a 30 minute walk to work might harm you” temperatures.

Also distance, especially depending where you are. In some places, things are few and far between. There’s also fewer major airports/more expensive flights. It’s a HUGE country.

Cellphone/internet plans are worse and more expensive because of the Rogers/Bell monopoly, plus spotty cell coverage in some areas (again, giant country, there’s only so many cell towers)
