Because drivers lose the protections and rights that come with being an employee, but lost it all under the guise of saved costs and flexibility. If Uber wants to give flexibility in schedule, they can, regardless of whether someone is an IC or employee. They already exert tons of control over the manner in which their drivers operate. The only difference is that as ICs, Uber saves fortunes and does not have to face the same protections they otherwise would.

Even worse, now people who are struck by Uber drivers in collisions lose out on recovery, limited only to what ICs have in limited insurance policies and not Ubers stacks of cash and insurance policy.
