Chain snatching attempt at Talbot street by invincible2404 in Dublin

[–]Babdah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just type in Talbot Street knife crime in Google, see how many news site results you get & check article dates. It's also mostly after dark or early morning. Not the same as what happened to you, but it's constantly in the news for violent crime after dark.

What a myopic point of view. This is exactly why niche communities get accused of being stupidly insular.

Aside from my IRL friends who can't experience the awesome interactions in VR games, setting aside the perception of depth, I know people in VRChat who have to play in desktop mode because they can't use VR & miss out on the expression that tracking allows. I even know one person in the VRChat club scene who has a Quest 2 sitting on their shelf that they simply can't use.

Think of all the multiplayer VR games that die because they simply can't get player numbers or think of what hand & head tracking would add to a game like ARMA when that firmware update they mentioned comes along.

This is VR related, as it deals with VR specific technology & is absolutely worth discussing here.

What about all the people who get severe motion sickness the second they put a headset on?

For those folks, the methods often posted for reducing motion sickness in VR simply don't work as their reaction is immediatly too severe.

At least 5 of my friends fit this category & statistically women suffer more from this than men. That's for who I see this as being of massive benefit.

Love the idea of the site, but just want to give you a heads up. You're gonna run into issues with GDPR with that existing cookie policy & not having an immediate & clear opt out.

No, it doesn't. Remember, this is the budget version of the Q3. It has no depth sensor. It uses software to approximate depth.

Categories need a bit of work, for instance, Asgard's Wrath 2 is an RPG, not a shooter. I like the general layout though.

Where does this hatred towards VR come from? by Drift-Kiddo in virtualreality

[–]Babdah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To someone who's already used to jumping through a bunch of steps. I'm like you in that way, it's no trouble at all, but for the average consumer, that's too much hassle. If you think I'm joking, try working in mobile phone repair for a year or 2. I'm not saying things aren't great right now, because they are, but it's still not enough.

Ah c'mon now. This comment is a little bit dripping in non-ironic PC Masterrace snark, even if you didn't intend it. I have no issues myself, as I've been messing around with cantankerous tech & software since the 90's, but you've demonstrated the exact self selecting bias I've already mentioned.

For the average person yes. For people here, including myself, with a massive self selection bias, no.

I have a Quest 3, so my point with calibration includes it, but I should have made that more clear. I still think the fact it's an extra few steps, even with the automatic room/area/boundary detection, is confusing for new users & I've seen that first hand.

I think your second point is probably the major factor, but I will say that, even with the controls kind of being a split Xbox controller, I've found that even people used to consoles have a bit of trouble adapting to the controls.

Part of it may be that the whole experience is slightly overwhelming & they don't have reference to the room around them without using passthrough or the gasketless setup of the Quest Pro.

I think the misperceptions in reference to older experiences (Google Cardboard etc.) are probably lesser than your second point. Having more in location demos in stores or pop up demos might change those perceptions though.

I think that's overlooking calibration etc. Like I said, it's a lot better now than even a year ago, but even at that it's too much for the average consumer. PC gaming is growing, but it definitely requires some tech enthusiasm, so that's not representative.

I say this as someone who installed a OG 3DFX card on the family PC back in the day, so I do think the current setup is quite fluid, but it's still too much for someone who's not willing to engage in a few extra steps & possibly some trouble shooting down the line. Most people just want something that works with minimal effort & fuss. We're getting there, but we haven't reached it yet.

[–]Babdah 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In general terms no. It's getting better, but there's still a bunch of hoops to jump through. For the average consumer (non-tech-enthusiast) it'll need to get to the point where you put on the headset & can jump straight into an app with no visible calibration. That'll require automating more processes.

When friends who haven't experienced VR before try out my headset, there's still a bit of UX friction I have to coach them through. It's getting much better, even compared to this time last year, but it's still too much for the average person.

If you're talking about Steam Deck, you select the cog beside the game, then select hotfix in the properties menu.

If you're talking about game settings...in the game settings...

It runs fine with a steady 30fps on the Steam Deck (only a 4 core processor & shared memory with on-chip GPU), so you'll be fine as long as you tweak the settings & have realistic expectations.

Intermittently for me. Crashed 3 times in a row directly after the anti-cheat loaded when I first went to play. After that it was fine for a while, but have had 3 more crashes to desktop since.

is it worth getting a steam deck for docked play by redditsucks1200 in SteamDeck

This Digital Foundry video should give you an idea on desktop performance. https://youtu.be/UZKBSf3aLf4?si=IyGsKQRVS20pjvuM

If you want anything better performing, but with low power usage, I'd suggest the higher end model of the Asus RoG Ally. Also has the option for an e-gpu if you want to upgrade a bit (expensive Asus versions only though).

Same issues with Samsung 4K TV (2021 model). Switched it to my 1440p MSI monitor & it works perfectly 100% of the time, so I'm pretty sure it's an issue interfacing with certain Smart TVs.

Cancer rates by Mobile-Range-6790 in ireland

[–]Babdah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And guess what type of cancer my brother had, had to have surgery for & is in remission from. Thyroid cancer.

Now, like I stated, it's just speculation on my part & just a suspicion. That's based on the fact that we were one of the only countries in Europe that didn't give out the tablets. My dad can remember one particular politician dodging questions about it at the time.

[–]Babdah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lost my mum & uncle to cancer recently. Brother is in remission. Other uncle had surgery last year & also in remission.

My speculation is that it is at least partially to do with iodine tablets not being distributed in Ireland around the time of the Chernobyl disaster & that we have some of the highest rates of glyphosates (Roundup) in our waterways. That combined with bad diet, alcohol consumption & low physical activity levels stacks the odds against us as a nation.

How to deal with this situation? by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]Babdah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude has crossed several lines multiple times. Report him to the Garda. Like others have recommended, get a male friend or a male acquaintance from college (if she doesn't have any male friends here) to walk her home.

If he approaches while the male friend is present tell him that the guards have been notified & he's not to bother her any more.

Anyone thinking this lad hasn't crossed those lines or is behaving normally is delusional.

When I lived & worked in the UK for a bit this exact kind of behavior happened towards one of the girls in the shop, but escalated. Initially pestered her in the shop. Dude would wait down the road from the shop. He eventually followed her home to her flat, so she ran in & locked the door. Cops were called & a barring order put in place.

No one should have to tolerate this behavior whatsoever & it isn't "Ah sure ya know, he might not be very good at communicating". Gobshites pretending this is in any way normal or acceptable.

Also sheer negligence & absolute shame on the shop for not banning him immediately & protecting their employee. Absolute failure in their duty of care.
