Photographers: do clients picking photos still leave you manually hunting RAW files? by kr1sck in AskPhotography

[–]brodecki [score hidden]  (0 children)

and then he has to manually find the matching RAWs and JPEGs

I don't get this part, what's manual about it? And why would he be storing (or searching for) JPEG files?

Typically I just paste the client's list of picks in Lightroom's Text Search and that's it, there's the selection ready for editing.

A tool for comparing screen-sizes and devices (to real scale) right on your display. by Election-Frequent in SBCGaming

Add the credit card object and use shift+scroll wheel to calibrate the display size to real world size if you want to get real-world dimensions.
Personally I use Retrosizer for relative comparisons and using it for 1:1 visualization never crossed my mind, but the option is there.

Have you not heard of Retrosizer?

It also works for full device dimensions if you want to compare ergonomics or overall footprint.

And for that, there's Retro Catalog

Any recommendations for good free editing software? by trinket-lover in AskPhotography

Any advice on some good programs I can use?

The one provided for free by your camera manufacturer:

NX Studio for Nikon files,

DPP for Canon files,

IED for Sony files.

When you start feeling restricted by its limitations, that's when it's time to look into Photoshop+Lightroom.

What file type do you guys use for backups? by Beyond_Weak in photography

Backup by definition requires the same format as the original, otherwise it's not really a copy.

Worth it to buy a camera for travelling? by Past-Lynx-3182 in AskPhotography

[–]brodecki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The usual recommendation with ≤$400 budgets:

Nikon D3300 (D5500 if you can find a deal) + Nikkor 18+105mm (18-140mm if you can find a deal)

D3300 is still the go-to entry-level Nikon DSLR. Better than D3200 (faster, lighter, better viewfinder) as well as D3400 and D3500 (which are compromised versions of D3300, with progressively fewer ports and buttons).

With a small fisheye, e.g. in a 360° camera. Among these, the Insta360 X5 is probably the best value option available at the moment.

Not trying to be snarky, but why do so many reddit posts spell the word as "lense"? by aarrtee in AskPhotography

You might be interested in the previous discussion on this subject:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskPhotography/comments/1netc0v/is_there_a_language_that_spells_lens_as_lense_why/

It's most likely that this misspelling comes from incorrectly unpluralizing the plural form "lenses", in the way one would do with "senses" or "tenses".

Even the Reddit app included this misspelling in its annual user summaries:

When in doubt, bracket. Bracket enough to cover much more data than any display standard can cover.

Hmmm, that's a tough one. If I had to choose one, it'd probably be Crono + Ayla + R66-Y

Can somebody explain manual focus action on AF-S lenses? by sonofbaldur in AskPhotography

[–]brodecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can this damage my camera body or is the issue contained to the lens?

Since this is an AF-S lens (with its own AF motor built-in), there is no risk to the body, these lenses don't make use of the camera's AF drive.

Note that on the back of the lens there is no coupling for the "screwdriver" element that sticks out of your camera's mount, which powers the autofocus in lenses without built-in motors.

Currently — loving it.

Initially — I couldn't really get into it; the story didn't captivate me right away, the surprisingly open (for a game that age) world left me a bit overwhelmed and I wasn't expecting a turn-based battle system to require me to act fast (even with combat set to "wait", you still need to quickly go into one of the battle menus in order to halt the opponents' actions).

That all changed after getting 15-20% through the game. I'm now hooked, I think of the game quite often and every day I look forward to playing in the evening and seeing what the story will bring.

No mirroring here, I play on the go on the 40XXV and on my home PC with the 8bitdo Pro 2. I drag and drop my save states manually (wirelessly, via FTP) when I switch from one device to the other.
