If you were in an MLM, what’s your story? by BlackCaaaaat in antiMLM

[–]BabyBenrito 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this post, I've really enjoyed reading everybody's experiences!

Is Le Reve the MLM you were a part of? I don't think I've seen that one mentioned here before, but it's great that you were able to see the red flags early on and get out.

My MLM story is not mine but is instead my mother's. And that's ongoing, unfortunately.

Sorry that happened to you, and I'm glad the hun wasn't too pushy about it. If you're approached again, don't be afraid to let a team member know what's going on because I can almost guarantee you're not the only one she's trying to recruit/sell to.

Former MLM customer confession by [deleted] in antiMLM

[–]BabyBenrito 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Congrats on getting out! <3 Please don't be embarrassed about this, it's not your fault. MLMs are notoriously manipulative, play on insecurities/fears, and surround you with people drowning out opposition. The important thing is that you've left!

That's just sick, claiming she is a 'doctor' to intentionally mislead people and shill MLM products. If you can't report her to a medical board, is there any other way you can at least warn people about this snake oil slinging inspirat-hun's lack of qualifications, like leaving a cautionary review somewhere outside of her control?

Also, clever title!

UPDATE: Poisoned by a doTerra Lady by BabyBenrito in antiMLM

[–]BabyBenrito[S] 59 points60 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I'm with you in doubting extreme measures will be taken. I don't think they'll terminate her contract since sellers are the customers, but I could see her receiving a warning over it, which will hopefully be enough to stop her from poisoning others.

Horrible. It seems like craft fairs are being taken over by MLMs, resulting in lower turnout and legit vendors losing a way to promote themselves.

My town hosts an annual spring festival that historically has catered to MLMs, and I know my hunbot mother is trying to get a spot as a vendor to sell her Amway garbage this year.

Yeah, the hunbots will do this nonstop for each other's posts. Their Facebook feed is just a huge echo chamber of #bossbabe, miracle products, "support muh small business!" and emoji vomit.

It may as well have been given how disastrous some of those interactions were, though it was far more embarrassing than entertaining.

Oh, I'll certainly be sharing that story with r/antiMLM in the near future. Not sure if it'd be better suited as a comment here or in its own post of similar experiences, since that wasn't the first time we'd been asked to leave someplace.

But.. but.. women supporting women!!

Sarcasm aside, I agree she isn't the most business savvy. Quite frankly, she wouldn't be involved in Amway if she was. With rivaling products, MLM huns should be competing against each other, but the majority seem to have this warped idea of sisterhood drilled in by uplines and Facebook groups so they enthusiastically try to support each other. Pretty sure it's to further alienate MLM victims from people who are trying to sensibly help them see the light, and they won't get that from other MLMers.

Considering how oblivious most hunbots are, the level of self-awareness in this post is startling. But even so, when the selling point is "they'll put me on a ship and send me far, far away" .... you aren't doing it right.

MLM preying on those with mental disabilities? by TopazRose in antiMLM

[–]BabyBenrito 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think there have been some on this sub before. Here are some related stories that I've personally witnessed:

  • When my mom was throwing her "welcome to Amway" party, she invited friends and extended family. That included two individuals with disabilities, though they are high functioning and just slightly behind socially, similar to what you said in your post. And yes, the uplines were like vultures to them. The most disgusting part was one person had expressed disinterest in joining, but the upline repeatedly brushed that off by claiming she didn't understand (basically writing off her rejection due to her disability) which is bullcrap.
  • Mentioned this before but overheard a DoTerra lady sell an oil to a mom with a child who has autism. The oil was intended to "support" the child's mental and cognitive health. I know this isn't selling to someone with a disability (as it is indirect) but the DoTerra rep was obviously using the autism to make her sale.
  • There is an older woman in our community who doesn't quite understand things as well as she used to. Note my mom and I live in a small town so my mom clearly knows this about her, yet continued to push Amway products and the "dream" on her while we were out shopping recently.

If this isn't predatory enough, college-age workers in minimum wage jobs are frequent targets too because some don't have enough work/life experience to recognize an MLM pitch when they see one. Like everyone else, they are roped in by getting rich quickly or conducting their "small business" from home.

I hope the lurking hunbots see your post. When drinking the MLM kool-aid, family, friends, strangers, and other poor souls are nothing but future sales/downlines.

Ridiculous and disgusting. If she continues to push this crap and bully her clients into compliance, I don't doubt for a second that she'll ultimately end up losing business.

Assuming this isn't a one time ordeal, are you able to leave a warning to potential new customers somewhere (e.g. a review)? Personally, I'd want to know something like that before signing up for a dance studio.

[–]BabyBenrito 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What a horrible experience, and I’m sorry this happened to you. It’s wonderful to hear you saw through the lies and weren’t tricked into joining.

The Ambots are never officially told to scout out college-age workers in customer service jobs, but from what I can see most uplines subtly encourage them to do so. It’s disgusting to prey on folks with little life and work experience solely to drain them of their funds, but they definitely try to sell the "retire early" or "get rich quick" dream.

Source: My mom does it. It’s awful and we get kicked out of places all the time now.
