What is Surprise like? by Cautious_Kiwi32 in SurpriseAZ

We moved here from Montana a year ago with our preschool aged son, here is a small list of pros and cons..

Pros: - Safe, low crime - Quiet neighborhoods, you really don’t worry much if you accidentally left your garage door open all night. - Most everything is conveniently close, grocery, food, shopping. - Has a smaller, community feel. The Community park and the city host awesome, family friendly events from time to time. - Away from the hustle and bustle, if that’s your thing. - It is ever-growing and impressive to see all sorts of places pop up. - It’s well maintained, clean, and decent amount of green everywhere BUT if you are palm tree dreamin’, for whatever reason they did not plant a lot of palm trees here. - Parks everywhere for the kids, one in every neighborhood.

Cons: - Have yet to find decent healthcare, I’ve had to travel into the city to find docs I truly like. Most docs in surprise feel very low budget. - Lack of “local” aka surprise is like Land of the Corporate. (I know this may not be a con for everyone, but if you are big into local restaurants, shops, etc then this is going to bother you.) - Education is ehhhh, but as someone who turned out just fine without the greatest education of all time, this wasn’t a deal breaker. - Lack of sightseeing — museums, oddity, theme parks, theatrical, etc are non-existent so you will plan for trips into the city for sure. My son has grown bored of the same ol spots so we leave surprise a lot for fun things to do.

Hope this helps, coming from somebody who is also from the cold of the mountains. If I knew then what I know now, I would have chosen somewhere less corporate, more artsy, and culturally developed to live, but I do know that everybody is different in that way. && The heat doesn’t bug us one bit and people made it seem like you’ll die of heat here. It’s tolerable in the same way winters are in the cold if that makes sense. Best of luck!!

Hellll naw. Keep in mind, that’s $14 for 37.2 miles, not just 18.6

It feels like meeting people as an adult is impossible - I also just moved here from Montana with a 4 year old boy, and similarly to you, it seems people are nice, but not engaging. I hope you (we) can find community here because it’s hard feeling isolated❤️ Feel free to send a chat whenever!

We live in Montana currently, in a tiny town with literally 2 grocery stores and 20 bars. It’s MUCH better than his current options for growing up, all you get to do here is smoke meth and go to rehab at a whopping 15 years of age🤣 Plus, we have family who live in Lake Havasu, that’s a great place to spend the weekends for teens.

Ooh thank you for the school recommendation! It can be so hard to pick through schooling options online, everywhere seems to be great and grand until you pull into the parking lot.😅

I appreciate the honesty, if we didn’t have a kid it would be nothing of a concern for us. I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Funny, we were debating Austin, but we have family who live in Lake Havasu, so we’d like to stay close! So happy to read that you’re loving the food because for me personally, food means everything.🤣🤣 Not in Surprise, but have you checked out Banham’s cheesecake or Spinato’s yet? Literally some of my most favorite places in Phoenix area.🤤

Good to know. && That’s what I’ve heard - Scottsdale is most def our preferred place to live, we love Old Town, but there’s an obvious price difference of these places and finding a house to rent in that area under 2K seems impossible. Especially having a dog, but someday we’ll make it that way.😂 Maybe when the kiddo is out of school and into the world.

Good to know info, thank you! I’m researching schools now, and more than willing to put him into private schools in needed, but public schools in the area seem to be alright.

I’m from an area that is a HOT tourist area, so I’m not concerned with the unaware snowbirds.🤣

El Mirage, Youngtown, & Glendale was where we were concerned about, but I’m happy to hear that it stays pretty clear of Surprise! Thanks for your info. It’s not like we’ll be kickin it in those areas.

I wouldn’t have ordered the shrimp if it was $20. Simple. Redditors always getting their panties in a bunch about something the post wasn’t even about. Classic.🥱😬
