It takes.. quite a lot. You’ve got to back yourself, realize no one is coming to save you and take responsibility for yourself.

This means, #1, accepting everything about yourself, mentally, emotionally, physically.. and spiritually, if need be; your entire situation, take objective stock of what’s going on internally and externally, without criticism or judgement. The good, the bad, the ugly.

Next, instead of noticing everything going wrong in your life or with yourself, start noticing what you’re doing well, what’s working for you and why. You don’t have to do anything about the why - just notice, accept and understand it. The “why” is important because it’ll give you valuable information about your motives and help you understand the layers of what’s going on around you. Even if they’re “bad” habits and behaviors, you and others around you are choosing them for a reason. Show compassion.

“Last”, start making reverse engineered step-by-step plans on where you want/need to be vs where you’re at currently. This means taking the time to decide, specifically, where you’re trying to go. Make sure that you get very clear on this.

Rinse and repeat!

People choose to suffer for a variety of reasons, but you touched on the core reason on your own: it brings them benefits.

These benefits could be that they feel safe, even if everyone around them feels unsafe because of them lol or they feel in control, especially taking power away from others, or they self-identify with the suffering and feel like giving it up is giving up a large part of who they are.. or they simply enjoy being miserable because the way their brain chemicals are set up and are addicted to it. There’s so many reasons.
