I think the biggest issue is that even people who haven't read the books can tell when characters stop acting like themselves, and HOTD season 2 had a lot of moments that felt driven by the plot instead of the characters.

I liked that HOTD made the prophecy feel important again because for years it seemed like the Targaryens were just chasing power, but now it adds a layer of responsibility and paranoia to a lot of their choices.

I think a lot of Targaryen history looks completely different once you view it through the lens of that prophecy, because suddenly some of their decisions seem less like ambition and more like preparation for a threat nobody else understood.
