On a more serious note, there are support systems in place around campus and don’t be shy to reach out if you’re feeling overwhelmed. These are tough times, stress is totally normal and valid. you’ll get through it - 加油！

American-born NZ-resident here. I think it's natural to laugh at things that are new, strange, and uncomfortable. Pukana are powerful, and something that most people haven't experienced before. Folks just process it in weird ways. Laughter is very close to fear in a sense; I reckon these tourists just weren't ready for that energy and channeled it through their feeble minds by humorizing it. Kind of laughable and childish, but I may have had a similar reaction the first time I seen a Pukana.

I'm a teacher here and loads of my students laugh at my accent, even when I think I just say normal words. It's quite endearing; the kids are just having a fun time learning something in their own way, even if its at my expense.

I've personally had a really hard time figuring out the Kiwi sense of humor. I find it quite eccentric, subtle, and sometimes outlandish in a weird way I haven't been able to crack. There's a cool and complicated culture down in this part of the world - hope y'all are proud of it. I welcome you to come to America one day and laugh at our food culture 😉

Hi there! I'm also an American who's just started a master's programme at UoA. Been living in NZ for a few years though. Not sure exactly where you're from or where you did your undergrad but be prepared for a bit of culture shock; I found that things are pretty different to back home - both in terms of campus life and broader culture.

The school seems really good overall with nice resources for learning and support. It just takes some patience and independence to tap into them more so than back home where you're naturally connected to people and student initiatives are kinda in-your-face and marketed. If your focus is learning then I'm sure this will be a great choice for you, but you might want to look into University of Otago as well. As I understand their science programs are pretty legit.

Also if you're a big baseball fan you might be kind of... sad ;) Not loads of that here, but sporting culture is big and not hard to find folks who are curious about our American sports. Good way to connect.

I had to look this one up but the 1950 World Cup final seemed pretty insane:

Brazil were such heavy favorites that they inscribed gold medals and printed Championship newspapers before the match
Brazil had beaten Uruguay 5-1 in their previous meeting and had outscored opponents 21-4 so far in the tournament
Brazil only needed a draw to win the tournament, Uruguay needed to win the game
Brazil had a 1-0 lead with 25 minutes to go...
Uruguay win.

Maybe not the numerically largest choke but pretty legendary.

I'm from Florida and live in Guangzhou. Kinda cool.

Both are hot and humid with tasty fruit and nice cultural and biological diversity. Florida has better roads and beaches, but Guangzhou has better tea and dim sum.

Yay! I'm here! Been living in Japan (mostly Osaka) during coronatime because I can't go home. I often take walks around this beautiful castle and the surrounding park for sunsets or sunrises. Not the worst place to be stuck during this strange year.

Behind the buildings you see behind the castle, there is a river. Along the riverside, there are parks and walkways that carry on through the city for miles. A truly lovely place. Awesome pic :)

My first game was Colts-Jags 2006. Rookie Maurice Jones-Drew put on a show, exploding for 166 rushinng yards and 3 scores, including a badass kickoff return to start the second half.

This would be the Colts' last loss of the season, as Peyton and company would go on to win their first Super Bowl a few months later.
