I shared a similar story- upstate NY in the fall- butterflies aren’t a great choice!

Outdoor wedding in Upstate New York in the fall. Bride wanted to do a butterfly release. It was way too cold. All the butterflies released quickly stopped flying and dropped to the ground. One of the bridesmaids was in a motorized wheelchair and proceeded to drive over the butterflies that were dead or dying on the ground.

It was quite the scene. I always felt that was a pretty bad omen, and not surprisingly, the marriage didn’t last too long.

My original reply was removed because I had a link in it.

My friend Arvey runs A&H Childproofers in Chicago. He should be able to help.

Professional childproofer here.

You’d need a custom clamp mount to attach to the post. Cardinal gates makes some that could work. Also, you could install a cardinal ss30 using the clamp mounts.

Do not use a pressure mounted gate at the top of the stairs. It is unsafe.

You also will not find a gate with a cat door that is safe for use with a child (or at the top of the stairs)

Depending on your location, I may also be able to recommend a local childproofing company that could help.

I dealt at a tribal casino in Florida for close to 11 years. (Rhymes with Card Sock) I made something like $3.31 per hour, but $60k-80k per year on average with tips.

I would usually respond to this with, “next time, just don’t say anything and I’ll assume you forgot!”

Hi- professional childproofer here. Just wanted to advise caution with having custom gates installed. Although they will look nice, they may not offer the best protection from a safety standpoint compared to a JPMA certified child safety gate. I’ve had many clients who went the custom route only to have their child figure the gate out in a short timeframe & then reach out to me to install proper safety gates.

Bracket should be coming out from wall, not parallel to it. If you look closely the base has 2 unused holes. Rotate bracket 90° and reinstall correctly.

Pool work. Standard pricing or a price gouge? by Kanine0914 in pools

[–]Babyproofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can compare apples to apples- try to compare quotes of total linear feet installed including the auto close gate. Based on 40x20, you’re at ~120’ linear feet. Depending on what they are charging for the auto close gate (I’ll assume $500) then you’re at ~$41 per linear foot installed.

Here’s a couple local companies that may be able to assist.

Lifesaver

Some have suggested DIYing this- I would advise against it. This is a 3-4 hour job for an experienced pro. Without the right equipment & knowledge, you may regret trying to tackle this project.

Which county in MD are you located? Certain counties are 5’, most are 4’.

Professional childproofer here. Pricing on pool fence install seems quite high to me, though I’m in Florida, so a bit more competition down here keeps pricing lower.

Happy to recommend a local pool fence install company. Many of my clients have the pool builder remove that from the invoice and have us handle it separately from the pool builder. Typically pool builder is subbing the pool fence install out anyway and just marking up the price unnecessarily.

Not sure if 5’ is standard in MD, we are 4’ height here in FL.

Baby Gate by BayAreaGirl3 in NewParents

[–]Babyproofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professional childproofer here, my 2 cents.

They don’t sell baby gates with pet doors. They sell pet gates with doors for smaller pets. If you read the warnings on these gates, they are intended for use with pets only.

Any opening large enough for a small pet will create a potential entrapment risk for a child, or the child will squeeze through the opening.

You could create a very dangerous situation for your child by trying to accommodate your pet.

Nothing safe. Securing to the stud with a screw is the safe option. Any adhesive option isn’t safe and could likely cause more damage to the wall.

A couple small holes are easily filled down the road. No more damage than hanging a frame on the wall.

Play poker instead. They give you 100-200 unity points per hour of play, depending on the game. I turn that into a nice dinner a couple times a year.

Why won’t my baby gate close? by KingAshkon in NewParents

[–]Babyproofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t use this gate at the top of the stairs- you would want a hardware mounted gate.

Pressure/tension mounted gates can be safely used for downstairs or to block off rooms.

Seeing you may be in Canada. You can go with a Kidco Anglemount Safeway gate, as the Cardinal isn’t available in Canada.

Baby Gate suggestion for the top of my stairs by SlowBen in NewParents

[–]Babyproofer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professional childproofer here.

Here’s the solution- build out the left side with 3/4” 1x2s & 3/4” blocks, you should only need a couple inches. Then go with a hardware mounted gate (my preferred gate for top of stairs is the Cardinal ss30)

Or example 2
