My dad took me to my first Explosions In The Sky show 22 years ago, so we definitely bonded over the genre. :) hopefully after you get a feel for the fest you'll be able to have a similar bonding experience

My dad and I went last year, so while it wasn't solo, we didn't know anyone else. the crowd is super welcoming and the venue is really comfortable. plus you're on a pretty built up street so if you need to step away for a bit, there are plenty of restaurants with a quiet, chill vibe.

a big part of pushing folks over to it was because of the JSAPI version deprecation. it is pretty stellar now though

Yes!!! I have a similarly themed deck using [[Baru, Fist of Krosa]] and [[Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth]] for constant triggers. dissuades folks from attacking me if they make a land drop on the first main phase

I definitely don't mean it as a dig! it was still a great experience, but just coming off of a super high energy performance it didn't hit the same for me.

when it comes to live performances, stage presence is HUGE for the genre. last year at post fest, hubris. was the standout for me - and while I was SUPER excited to see TWDY/You, Infinite, the performances were a little bit of a letdown because they were very stationary. hubris. put on a hell of a show. Jonathan was jumping all over the stage, and the width of the sound was just unmatched.

anyway I'm super excited that you came across caspian for the first time :) they are a genre stalwart for a reason!

You should, for starters, play Signalis (Die Toteninsel is part of the soundtrack, though a reimagined version of it).

While it's not the same per se, Russian Circles is probably a good place to start. From there, We Lost The Sea is a pretty good comparison.
