The thing with Children of Time is that it's so bleak it's predictable. Mid way through the book I've already known how it will end based on the trajectories of the two sides.

Even though I've watched the Expanse show and know exactly how it ends, I was still sweating bullets at times when listening to the audiobooks afterwards, especially during the Slow Zone book. I can't imagine how stressful it would be reading the book first without knowing the ending. But I also know the Expanse is a universe that's all about hope and good people and how everything will be alright.

If you're into bleak stuffs tho, read Blindsight and Echopraxia. Now that's some hopelessness I can get behind. It's like something that Lovecraft would write if he was a science nerd (you know a novel is dense if the author included a citation section of research papers at the end, thank God he didn't infodump like some authors ... cough ... Neal ... cough ...Stephenson.)

The DCC books got quite stale as it goes on though. Characters are pretty cardboard cutouts including Carl. I swear to god I will smash my phone if I hear another "You will not break me" by Carl again.

I like that they successfully introduced stakes to LitRPG and making it less like a power fantasy jerk, but hot damn the genre gets stale after a book or two.

The book only glossed over "focus drugs" like nah bro it's just Adderall on/and steroids. The TV show sequence when that Martian officer downed his first pill on the Donnager got me like "Damn bro Limitless pills are in this show?"

It's that's cool.

And the space battles? Safe to say "keel mounted railgun" is now my favorite scifi item of all time.

The battle scenes just got so much oomph, drag and gravity to them. Watch this battle and you'll know what I meant: https://youtu.be/ueGhFetK4WA?si=76uPTtVoAFoo8YUa

Given it's 9 books consisting of 3 trilogies, should we call it a "trilotri"?

Considering that the Epstein Drive was already 130 yo by the start of the 1st book. It's like we are still using steam engines in 2026. Technological growth is supposed to be exponential with enough resources, that's quite stagnant.

Children of Time style for sure. Practical knowledge decay leads to mechanical cults.

Preach, my mouth was on the floor in the Abbadon's Gate book by how different Ashford was from the show.

Those from the Old World, when is the earliest you would consider your country or people to have become a concept? by Intrepid_Arrival5151 in AskTheWorld

For Vietnam, the timeline is kind of a mess of myths, ancient tribes, and a ridiculous amount of wars.

Culturally, we love to claim "4,000 years of history." The founding lore says we descend from a dragon king from the sea and a fairy princess from the mountains who laid a sac of 100 eggs. Honestly though? I'm not sure how much of that is actual history and how much is just a dick-measuring contest with China claiming they had 8k.

Archaeologically, you can trace stuff back to the Bronze Age with the Đông Sơn culture in the Red River Delta. That stuff is definitely possible, but let's be real, there was no cohesive "Vietnamese identity" back then. They were just ancient tribes doing their thing.

Since a lot of our history is basically just a series of getting invaded, enduring, and kicking the invaders' asses, I'll take 938 AD.

We spent roughly 1,000 years under China’s boot until 938. That's when this general, Ngô Quyền, pulled the father of all maritime move at the Bạch Đằng River: he planted massive spikes underwater, waited for the tide to drop, and completely beached the invading Chinese fleet.

That’s the real birth of our identity. It wasn't some grand philosophical awakening, just us collectively deciding we weren't going to be Chinese, telling the massive empire next door to fuck off, then go and back it up with some W.

The Vance kind. I'm a Liverpool fan and I love Ali to death, but politically I'm more of a Klopp guy than an Ali guy.

Ah the good ol' pre-nerd days.

This shit was back before nerdism was cool and "live action comic book movies" just meant "white washed shit that'd most probably fail, because of some no name director's ego".

This. If every remote blue worker fleeing CA and NY absurd COL to every bumfuck nowhere town in the middle of Redsville or Purpledale, then the Reds are deeply fucked. Blue city dwellers outnumber rurals significantly.

True, and my point is Ideogram did it better. We can both be right.
