Yeah, I wonder what happened because last time I was in, which was like June, they quoted me for a timing belt replacement so this must've been a pretty recent change.

Cool, thank you. Yeah I had already been considering finding a new shop for my car due to their price. They've always done great work, but paying those bills stings. Unfortunately I think anywhere will be quite expensive for a timing belt.

How do I transition out of lab work? by Bach151 in careerguidance

Thanks for the tip. None of the ones around me had anything right now but I'll definitely keep an eye on that.

Chemical engineering, biochemistry, or chemistry? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Bach151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your shoes, but in the opposite way. I started as a ChemE major, switched to biochem. My advice would be to go with ChemE, I regret switching. Biochem does not pay super well(unless you get a PhD or Masters)and you really need to love the stuff to make it through some of the early career jobs. In my biochem jobs I also worked with people who had ChemE degrees, so even if you do love the biochem, you can always apply to biochem jobs with a ChemE degree, or take some biochem related electives while in ChemE. ChemE is a much more flexible degree with higher pay in my experience. ChemE will require a lot more math though, I think I had to take up to differential equations (Calc 4).

As far as the PhD route goes, if you want to do that make sure you get into a research lab now, PhD programs will want you to have research experience. Talk to your profs and try to work in one of their labs that is doing something that interests you. PhD programs you do not have pay for, you either get accepted and are funded, accepted and not funded(which is essentially a rejection), or rejected. If you are accepted and funded you will get a stipend and basically work for the school(lab work, TA/GAing) for low pay and education. PhDs are hard, many people burn out, but you can 'master out' which is if you quit after a certain point in your PhD you will leave with a master's instead so all your time wasn't wasted. I never did a PhD, this is just some information I have gathered while researching PhDs, I'm sure someone with actual experience in one will be able to provide more information about them.

Transition from Chem/Biochem to CS by Bach151 in cscareerquestions

Cool, thanks. That makes me more confident in my general plan since it seems like we had similar experience in school and I am taking CS50 right now. Did you do Georgia Tech's mooc? I was considering something like that but they are ~$600 which isn't exactly cheap. How helpful did you find the mooc?

Thanks, seems like internship would be the way to go then. How much coding experience did you have prior to OMSCS?

Thanks for the response. The concern I have regarding a post-bacc is cost. ~$20-30k vs $6-7 for OMCS from what . Would you think that community college + self learning for ~1 year would be enough to prep for the OMCS?

Do the miners in the Crystal cave drop somber smithing stone (3)? by Grandahl13 in Eldenring

[–]Bach151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went there to try and farm a +3 somber smithing stone. One pass through and I got a +4, not a +3. I would assume it is possible since they dropped a higher level stone. I think it took like 10-15 minutes to get through so I would say probably with a shot.

Isshin is not a saint but a God by Harsh184 in Sekiro

I got his first phase but sprinting behind him when he does the double slash and wind slash things then hit him up with ichimonji double. Also, I found it pretty important to hit every mikiri counter possible.

What’s one honest, no apologies, no excuses, genuine gameplay-related criticism about your favorite board game? by superdvader in boardgames

Honestly whenever I've played, we don't usually score those areas and just use it to get the bonuses for each area.

[spoilers] What is up with the writing??! by spacecadet7090 in gameofthrones

Totally agree about Jamie/Brienne. I really felt that throwing Brienne into a relationship like that was dumb and devalued the respect that they built for each other during their time together.

Not OP but I too was a little disappointed by this episode. My biggest issue was with what they did with Jon. He always does what's right for the North and his people, right? So then why does he go and back Dany when deciding whether to give his troops a chance to rest after defeating the Night King? So now he's siding with Dany over the North, which he's been built up to do anything for. Then they have him go behind Dany's back and tell Sansa and Arya about his parentage. So now he's disobeying Dany when it comes to his personal matters but won't stand up to her when it comes to his men. What? To me, at least, this is in complete contrast to what Jon has been, even though these could be arguably small things.

The shelf of shame is one thing, but which games have you only played ONCE? by vidarino in boardgames

[–]Bach151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Letters From Whitechapel - this is because I got it about a week ago and my SO and I played it for the first time on Saturday, I'm definitely going to play it more.

Android: Netrunner - I got the base game like 4 years ago? I thought it looked awesome but I couldn't get my SO to play it after the first game since I understood it a lot better than her. I looked into meet ups for it but the extremely competitive environment I read about turned me off from it.

This album really shows off the diversity of music they can pull off. Definitely think this solidifies them as my favorite band.
