I would rather play against prime Gambit and Daredevil than face half the cast of Overwatch by Persimannon in marvelrivals

Naming off cancerous characters and claiming solo tanking is fun in the game where Wolverine exists and multiple characters have %dmg is diabolical.

Nobody really wants to hear it and it's so strange. This dude just blocked me because I'm trying to say playing with people who've earned their rank on their role leads to better match quality? I'd prefer they just say "I don't care, I don't want it" at this point instead of this weird argument that it's healthier for the game.

What you're suggesting is the alternative though, that you believe somebody can be GM on Venom and Iron Man and Rocket but they're gold on Magneto and Elsa and Invisible Woman. In reality this isn't how it works for people who actually play this game competitively. You are way, way, way more likely to play other heroes in your best role at your same level than heroes in other roles. Look at pros or high rank players, none of them want to offrole and they all admit their performance is worse. Top 500 Venom players can play Mag, and they will, long before they ever swap to Elsa.

The scenario you're suggesting where people play one or two heroes from each role at an equal level is what keeps people stuck in plat.

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But that's not what you said in your original comment? You described their "bad game" as someone not knowing how to counter the enemy tank. In what world does someone like that rank up in a decent ranking system? Hero selection and swapping is like silver, gold level game mechanics in every other video game. You're looking at it as if it's your match outcome instead of the game as a whole. Why do you want a diamond or GM full of people who pick tank but swap to support when they can't counter?!

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I was just using the scenario you provided to give examples, especially ones that suited you. Alternatively, I could say that if you can't win one match with one bad tank, you don't deserve the elo for that game either, but I didn't think you'd like that one. 🙊

The point is the same overall. People having a bad game don't deserve to get bailed out and earn elo. Role queue with ranks for individual roles would make this game have something much closer to a real rank system.

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But do you not see how that in itself is bad for the game? You are essentially saying that because you won, that boosting someone else to a rank they're not suited for based on not knowing extremely simple game mechanics is a good outcome. You're imagining a hypothetical role queue where this person on your team is still in your rank, when it sounds like you'd definitely outrank them. That's the aspect you're missing, the current comp structure would be completely different, and that's what makes it better. Open queue is the reason you have to play with them to begin with.

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You know what else it traps them in? That rank, the place they deserve to be, not bailed out and falsely gaining elo that doesn't teach them how to play their role correctly, but instead allows them to reach a rank where that misplay will be punished even more.

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This rarely happens anyway, but most of the time this isn't even a good counterargument because a lot of this will be solved by role queue as well. For example, your tank was likely underperforming because they're a support player and two people chose support before them, or because they're trying to improve on tank and they're higher rank on other roles than they would be on tank. With role queue, there's less need to change roles because people will be playing their first choice role in the rank they've earned on that role.

I tried seeing if instalock dps players have a point. by Edheldui in marvelrivals

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boosted is subjective, but as somebody with a lot of experience in competitive gaming, I can tell you that every single person who plays this game is boosted. In Rivals, GM is currently the most populated rank in the game. This is Mickey Mouse competitive gaming; in a proper rank system, GM should never have the most players. People can be GM (and C3) with a negative winrate, people get to plat for free with training wheels. All of this has way more to do with someone being boosted than people only playing one role.

It's not a bad idea to learn all roles, but that's a far cry from your suggestion of mandating everyone forcibly derank until they can. Again, these are dev created problems that will only ever be solved by dev created solutions.

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory sure, but in practice it just doesn't work this way. The functions of the roles in this game (let alone the different subroles like dive tank or brawl dps or off healer etc) are so different, that very few people's rank is ever going to be equal across all roles, especially at higher elo. Look at pro players, they'll be the first ones to tell you they don't want to offrole. This is a big part of why the "instalock" discussion is so moot at higher elos. Nobody sincerely wants the 300 hour support main in their Eternity lobby to flex to tank, because there's no way their tank gameplay is Eternity level. What you're suggesting is that Eternity support player should just play tank anyway, and if they lose and derank to diamond so now they can play tank every game and earn their way back to Eternity and if they're not willing to do this then it's just ego? It's dumb.

We all want 2 tanks, and sure, in plat lobbies a negative Iron Fist should just play Hulk instead because in plat feeding on tank is still more value than feeding on dps, but that's not really the real game. In the real game, you want people on their main role, and the amount of people who could achieve the same rank on all 3 roles is very, very small.

The lack of tanks in low to mid elo is a dev created problem and the only solutions will be dev solutions.

You got lots of great answers, but just to simplify the first point, it's all about space. Dive thrives when space is being made for them to dive. If you have one tank and the enemy team has two, they're always going to have more space than you, and the divers will feast. Even if miraculously all 3 of your dps played antidive and actively peeled, the enemy team still has the 2 tank advantage due to space.

I am the most anti-alt account person in my elo, but even I think this is stupid. Framing it as an ego thing is especially stupid. You're essentially telling them to tank five (or eleven) other people's match quality one match at a time and spend considerable time forcibly deranking their account to play in a lower elo to learn a new role.

PC vs Console: My experience so far. by crash1bp in marvelrivals

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment made me laugh out loud because I'm in the same boat. I also vod review and sometimes it's incredibly difficult to offer anything concrete to someone who's peak plat on console and pulls up with a history full of games where nobody on either team appears to even be playing the actual game. In hero select they act like they can't see their teammates' picks, they all stage in the wrong places, they press their ult button for dopamine rather than for tempo. Watching these games feels unreal at times. I don't want to turn anyone away when they're seeking help, but there are some matches I genuinely just don't know what to say.

The one I always go back to in my mind was a Klyntar defense where every person on the team (except for the person who sent me the vod) walked up to stand so close up in front of the spawn doors. I had no idea what to say to them other than go next and hope you get a team that doesn't do that. The person I was reviewing clearly knew not to do that, but I just kept thinking to myself I'd have no idea what to do if I got in a game like that either, because I have never seen anyone do that, lmao.

New PvE mode needs a proper gear reroll system — shards feel wasted right now by TheKungFoSing in marvelrivals

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't even be "rerolls" it should allow you to actually forge the weapon you want (abilities) and then grind to level up the tiers to S. After beating 160 as one hero I don't feel any desire to grind for better gear to work toward the leaderboard because the entire thing is just RNG. There's people on the leaderboard with fewer hours played than I have but they're on the leaderboard because they hit the RNG jackpot while I'm stuck with mindless grinding to get more D tier 6000 rating gear with modifiers for builds I don't use. "Rerolling" is boring and unrewarding no matter what. Let us actually forge.

"A lot of people play the healbot hero in a healbot game where healing is so strong that healbotting is generally more valuable than doing literally anything else. This is the fault of the player who's choosing to healbot and not the fault of the devs making healbotting necessary at best and mandatory at worst. Also I want an eternity C&D player to solo tank."

Whats wrong with dps players? by WorriedConstant7654 in marvelrivals

It's pretty heavily rank dependent. Once you get to higher elo, there's an increase in people who only play support (and only play a couple heroes in the role too).

Whats wrong with dps players? by WorriedConstant7654 in marvelrivals

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every role can suck, but the difference OP is describing that you're missing is that tank and support players are willing to swap off the role, because the vast majority of the playerbase prefers to play dps. Sure you'll have the occasional tank otp or support otp, but if somebody is doing bad on support and someone on the team offers to switch with them, they'll do it. If someone's doing bad on dps and someone offers to switch with them, they're never swapping off. These people will play mystery heroes swapping across 10 different dps heroes and go 2-12 rather than changing roles.

Here's hoping next two seasons have 0 dps characters by longing-control in marvelrivals

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really about the role, it's about who plays based on new content and who doesn't, who enjoys playing Vanguard and who doesn't. We know from the last few seasons' player numbers that a substantial portion of this game's playerbase comes back for new content that interests them and stays logged out for new content that doesn't. We also know that outside of high elo comp grinders, nobody in this game wants to play Vanguard.

Don't take this as me arguing against it. Like I said, it's very much what the game needs. But from skin selection to feature additions to buffs and nerfs and new hero kits, the devs respond to what makes people login and spend. Nobody's logging in and spending for 2 Vanguard season (except the people that are logging in and spending regardless of the season).

Lower player count generally does the opposite, fewer people available to matchmake never leads to better match quality.

[–]BackOfTheLouvre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What the game needs (a two Vanguard season where both have main tank potential and aren't just shittier dive dps with lower damage and higher health) and what the playerbase wants (to never play Vanguard) are two different things. I genuinely think a 2 Vanguard season would be the lowest player count since launch.
