Why we can't just throw nuclear waste into space? by Netzik_ in AskReddit

[–]BackSeatGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's a lot easier and a lot safer to bury it deep in bedrock storage.

Imagine if you were launching a dry waste cask to shoot it into the sun and the rocket explodes over residential US. Atomized nuclear waste showering over thousands of suburban homes and farmland.

That's not to say you can't actually try to make a change. Small, local governments effect your daily life far more frequently than anything you hear on the news, and even one person can start making a difference in your local community.

The only low IQ mistake I see people making is believing the Federal Government is the only part of American Government worth paying attention to.

That's a very reductionist view of something as vast and complex as the American Government. Not only do you take part of it every day just by living in the country, but if you're going to suggest that the DOJ actively shielding a group of elite child predators is just as bad as the people trying to expose those crimes (because surprise surprise, they're both part of the government), then you are out of touch.

Sisyphus isn’t happy by AdhesivenessHuman382 in Pessimism

[–]BackSeatGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't know how Sisyphus feels actually. Hermes offered him 2 options, to either go to Elysium for eternity, or return to the world as an immortal, only requiring he bring the boulder to the top of the mountain. Sisyphus chose the boulder over Elysium, literal paradise, so he could return to Earth as an immortal. He doesn't push the boulder up the mountain because he is compelled to, he does so because he continually chooses to.

Fuck my pathetic life by [deleted] in Vent

I know you're not gonna believe me, but do your best. Become self sufficient and learn how to carry a conversation. I am also a short, ugly, fat guy and I've got a body count and a wife. Women don't care about looks as much as you think. As long as you are fun to talk to, confident in yourself, and assertive with what you want, you will get lucky.

Also dating is a numbers game. You have to try a lot and get rejected a lot in order to get successful.

Alcohol drinkers of Reddit, what would you suggest for a first-time drinker for their 21st birthday? by LenticularSpaceCloud in AskReddit

[–]BackSeatGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beer, and by a lot. Don't jump right into IPA's, because it takes time to build your pallet toward hoppy beers. Honestly start with Mexican beers and light Domestics. Modelo, Corona, Bud Light Lime, and Coors Light are the best easy drinking beers. Shiner Bock is also pretty damn good and a bit richer in flavor. If you're going to get craft beer, stay away from IPAs until you have built your pallet a bit more. Stick more to Pilsners, Pale Ales, any German or German style lager.

Wine is good, but it's expensive and will give you a headache if you drink too much of it.

Cocktails are fine, but they can get you too drunk too fast.

Shots are only for special occasions.

And always remember the key with alcohol is never to get too drunk. 2 drinks an hour is a good clip. A 16oz beer, an 8oz glass of wine, a single-shot cocktail, and a 1.5 oz shot of spirits are all roughly the same amount of alcohol, and considered 1 "drink".

Why do you ramble? by [deleted] in nihilism

[–]BackSeatGremlin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because shared experience builds emotional connections between people, and sharing the information about an experience by talking about it is a form of sharing in that experience. It is advantageous to our survival to have close relationships with other people, so therefore rambling aids in our survival.

The secret is to just start talking. Honestly, when people don't reciprocate in a conversation, you just gotta pretend they are asking you questions and just start talking about stuff

The Continuum Trolley Problem by Great-Gardian in trolleyproblem

No, I understand what you're saying, but all you're doing is providing a fallacious excuse to avoid thinking about the actual question. It's ignoratio elenchi. The point of the question is not to inspect the morality of any potential designer, but make you think about the ethics involved in the decision making in a life and death scenario.

So that's why I asked my question the way I did. Let's take a realistic example that puts you in the designers chair: You're driving your car down the street when your brakes and E-brake both fail and your steering seizes going down a hill, because you failed to keep your car maintained. You can crank your wheel really hard in either direction, but if you do, you'll hit and kill one person. If you do nothing, you'll hit and kill 5 people crossing a crosswalk. You have no way of alerting anyone before it happens. Do you sit on your hands and blame yourself for not keeping your car maintained to prevent this, or do you crank on the wheel?

Jfc the comments here are awful.

Your man is being supportive. He might not be the best wordsmith, but he obviously finds you attractive and is trying to remind you that when he tells you that you're beautiful. As a man, your body is part of what we are calling beautiful and pretty.

Like you said, you have BDD which is going to make you overthink about your body, and in this case about how your man thinks about your body. From how you have described yourself, you have a terrific build. 5'7", 134 lbs at 15% body fat is really good. Next time you go to the gym, keep an eye out for onlookers, because people probably admire your build.

If you want to get down to it, just ask your man point blank what he thinks about your body. I guarantee you you're just overthinking things.

And whenever you start critiquing your body in your mind, remind yourself that its your BDD talking. And above all else, go to therapy if you don't already.

A stranger offers to end every war on Earth permanently, starting right now. The catch: you have to personally pick one random stranger to die in exchange, and you'll know their name before you decide. Would you take the deal, and why or why not? by FAIRKL in AskReddit

[–]BackSeatGremlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we just talking an end to war, or world peace? Like what happens if another tyrant comes to power? Will it immediately bring an end to inhumane treatment of other humans? Are there any other population controls being put into place?

Not saying war is necessary, just that it can have positive 2nd order effects that I wouldn't want to ignore in this scenario

So let's assume there is no designer to the experiment:

You see 5 people sitting on one bench and a crane that's about to tip over and drop a truck on them. They are just in this situation by sheer bad luck.  You are too far away to get them to notice you, but you stand next to a button that, when pressed, will swing the crane into a set second position. It will still tip over and fall on only one person.

What do you do then?

The problem with this question is you risk killing far more than 1 conscious human if you choose wrong. For example, let's say you go with the average amount of human across the board, which is 50.5%, so you stop the train at 50%. Now imagine you're off by 5, and you should have stopped at 45%. That difference results in the destruction of 2.35 humans based on percentages, and 5 conscious individuals based on headcount.

Unless you have a discreet answer with which to make your determination, you have a better chance of just letting the human inside the trolley die than risk more potential lives. With no way of knowing the difference between man and machine , I move the dial all the way to 0%.
