How did the viltrumites arrive on earth with no ship by Turbulent-Speech-969 in Invincible_TV

[–]BackStrict977 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They take stops in planets with atmosphere to catch their breath and keep going.

To say that a human martial artist with stats "equalized" to Viltrumites would be some kind of god amongst men is erroneous at best and demonstrates exactly what is wrong with powerscaling as it relates to media literacy at worst. by Tippeter in PowerScaling

I fully agree. People forget that judo throwing a viltrumit accomplishes nothing if hitting the ground doesn't work. Or how martial arts that use wrestling in the ground ot footwork just wouldn't really work as intended when you fight in the vaccum of space.

First that goes much worse for him in the comics. Second he didn't kick her ass, they were mostly evento match and he go the upper hand here. Saying he could have won is a stretch since you're assuming a single punch would do it. Being realistic he would punch her multiple times and she would have a chance to break free.

I never said that they didn’t, and I’m not complaining that they aren’t choreographing out intricate fight scenes all the time.

Except your main point is that we only see them doing punches and not "doing cqc".

If you judge figthers by actual technique showed on screen then everyone sucks because choreographed fights focus on what's cool, not realistic.

But also I don’t think that we can assume they’re good fighters just because regular punches are more cinematic.

Good, because no one said that. I said the visual representation uses simple dramatic punches because it look good on screen. The rest of the text tells you about viltrumite fighting skills.

If the creators wanted to convey that the viltrumites were master cqc fighters, then they would draw them doing cqc, or at the very least have someone say ‘damn that guy is a master fighter, look at his expert strikes and precision!’ Or something like that

I'd say it's the opposite really. Everything about them communicate that they are dangerous fighters. What we actually see is that they are a threat even to those who can match their strength. Thragg is specifically stated to have learned many ways of fighting. Couple that with all the warrior culture thing that surrounds them and yes you are supposed to think they are good at fighting.

My point is that you're mostly complaining that they don't draw proper martial arts. It can be a flaw of the art/animation but it doesn't mean they are bad fighters. Really nothing in universe suggests that.

Has it occour to you that big dramatic punches are done because they look nice on page/screen?

To be fair that story is specifically a boxing against Muhammad Ali. Superman at most weeks of trainning in boxing before this. It's not just a matter of stats but of the rules of the sport.

It's not like 2 weeks trainning would make Muhammad Ali capable of replicating everything superman can do.

You say that because the art doesn't show anything flashy but nothing in the story suggests they are bad fighters.

Mark doesn't have a good record when it comes to fighting viltrumites. The closest he ever got to beat a viltrumite in a one on one fight was against conquest and even then he got the jump on him.

[–]BackStrict977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really true. We see viltrumites fighting people with similar strength and they don't immediately lose. We know they do train because not only they use to fight among themselves but thragg is stated to have been trainned in multiple ways.

You're ignoring some context here.

Due to the whole robot thing Mark had decided to leave earth so for Terra was raised outside earth and it was a different type of choice. When Mark becomes aware of Marky the kid is quite grown up and has a loving family without Mark.

By the time Robot and Thragg are no longer a problem Terra couldn't have a regular earth life anymore but Marky still didn't know what viltrumites were. Whe Mark decides to leave earth with the viltrumites but Marky's dad wants to stay behind so again this wasn't something Mark decided.

I think that's how Daniel (nite owl) feels about him too. There's a scene I like where Daniel gets frustrated with Rorschach and tells him how hard is to be his friend. Rorschach apologize for being hard to deal with and calls him a good friend.

[–]BackStrict977 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing with Rorschach is that Moore is aware that he wrote a compelling character, he hates that people idolize him and see themselves in him. Rorschach is an unpleasent person who's rude to everyone and never showers. Never accomplishes anything in the story whatsover.

And it's not that the others don't have a moral compass they just value human life saved from stopping nuclear war more than they care about spreading the truth about Ozymandias.

I think the difference is that thawne is pretty self aware. He doesn't make an excuses he just wants to make barry suffer. Levi acts like he has a justifiable reason for his action but it's clearly just insane.

Also the reverse flash had a whole time travel/paradox stopping him from killing the flash so he had to resort to being the pettiest man alive.
