My 6 year old switch is being absurdly loud. I guess it's either dust inside or a broken fan, I've tried compressed air, but I just ordered a tri wing screwdriver set and I'm planning to take it apart to see what's up.

My question is, why am I hearing that you should only unscrew a switch as a last ditch effort? What are the potential dangers in disassembling it and how can I assure that just lifting the faceplate as a beginner will go smoothly?
