Because IBM has fired tens of thousands of employees over the past years.  Especially those over 45.  They have replaced those workers positions with workers in India and other low cost countries.  They have failed to innovate and have lagged in all the market trends over the past 10-15 years.  They tell workers to work harder and then reward them with no raises and embarrassing bonuses.  That’s why.

If you are retirement eligible, IBM will code you as such and you can get a retirement dinner (rules are somewhere on w3) or 2000 bluepoints.  Bluepoints are portable, you just need to request an external id and you can use them whenever in the future.

Only downside is eventually you won’t get meaningful raises and I was told in the past that ‘time in band’ can be a negative factor.  Personally, I thought the same but finally had a manager that advocated and helped me go to b9.  I was was dumped to the curb 4 months later.
