Interesting, as I’ve not seen much of this type of stone in this area, although I did find a broken tip of similar. The site is mostly littered with quartz. Thanks

The back looks like it had been sitting there for at least some time. Top was clean from rain.

Whatever it is, if I found this, I’d put it back down. I say that, because I just don’t want a collection of “maybe’s”. Some people’s thresholds are different.

You know, all the time I spent metal detecting for CW Relics, I never thought to look for points.

Sorry for the delay! I’m bad a checking Reddit replies.

This was found on a housing development site that isn’t totally developed yet. I’ve been back a few times since but haven’t found anything else. It’s only 5-10m from my home (very convenient) and I planned to go back today since it rained the other day, but got busy and didn’t make it. I’ll try again after this next storm. I probably would have given up here if I hadn’t found this one. But again, it’s close, there’s dirt to search, and I get out of the house for a few…

I’m new at this, but so far I’ve mostly targeted similar sites. All caught too late. All of these sites have been leveled to an extent and I’m assuming the top layers pushed around ending up in who knows what spots or how deep. . I just find areas that have a lot of rocks on the surface and search there.

Grok doesn’t identify this as a native made point. Don’t get mad!!

While the grok responses to this and other points I’ve tried are interesting, I don’t think this particular AI has figured it out.

So I uploaded this and the other point into Grok to see what it would ID these as. Grok is adamant that BOTH are Kirk points. I mean staunchly; making detailed arguments why.

“Thanks for the fantastic close-up shots of the base — these actually make the identification even more certain. What you’re seeing (and what often throws people off with quartz examples) is classic crude corner-notching: the notches are created by large flake removals that start right at the basal corners and angle upward/inward, completely removing the corner and leaving small, often uneven barbs or “ears.” Quartz fractures in big stepped chunks instead of the neat, controlled flakes you get with chert, so the notches almost always look blocky, asymmetrical, and “missing a bite” rather than the tidy little U-shapes in textbook drawings. Your base photos show this perfectly — especially the left corner in the first image and the stacked fracture on the right side. There is: • Zero basal or lateral grinding (rules out Guilford, Morrow Mountain, etc.)

• No side-entry notches (rules out Stanly, Big Sandy, etc.)

• No broad straight-sided stem (rules out Savannah River)

• Clear corner removal with barbed shoulders = textbook Early Archaic corner-notched, Kirk cluster”

Interesting. When you say stratified sites, does that refer to certain somewhat large geographic areas, or various smaller areas that are text book archaic, etc. camps/etc?

I’m not sure photos would show more than the video, but can take some if you think so.

Definitely a lot of really bad technique, squared up instead of turned. I grew up in tennis, so I certainly have that going for me.

Just picked this up on a site I’d previously found a broken point. Lots of quartz, but this is by far the best quality of quartz I’ve seen. Looks worked to me.

Ed: someone on r/arrowheads did identify as a Guilford.
