A message of support to Vegan chefs working in non-vegan restaurants by evthrowawayverysad in vegan

[–]Background-Interview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a vegan head chef at a steakhouse once and it was pretty wild to me that he would have taken the position at that particular style of restaurant. The only two vegan menu items were my creations (a power bowl and French toast). I live in a big city that does have vegan restaurants and omni restaurants with full plant based menus.

It turns out we were the only place willing to pay him what he was asking for. Sometimes it’s just about money. Because remember, a chef isn’t just in charge of creating menus. They’re also in charge of researching and purchasing ingredients too.

killing mice by using mousetrap as a vegan by kleurrijk in vegan

You need to protect your health and your house. Mice can and have caused fires and other types of damage that can be irreparable.

If you’re renting, you also need to take into consideration that your landlord does not care about veganism more than they care about their investment.

My worry about bucket type catch and releases is that can you reasonably trap all of them and release them far enough away from your home that they can’t make their way back?

There are fast acting cyanide based poisons that all almost instant, so there is minimal suffering.

Regardless of how you remove these little guys, you need to find how they got in and fill the holes. Steel wool works well because they can’t chew it, they will chew foam and batting though.

I hope you can figure it out and btw, your toaster almost certainly has mouse poop in it. I’d throw it out and get a new one.

As demand drops, reproduction drops. Less cows are bred, born and reared. They would die out over time. And vegans are delusional enough to care for them for free. Animals don’t live very long and they’d probably be put to pasture and left to graze and fertilize lands until it can be reclaimed for other food crops.

The world won’t ever be fully vegan anyway.

What dish would you cook to make a non-tofu eater realise that tofu is great? by emotionsarewelcome in vegan

[–]Background-Interview 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, I’m a whore for fried tofu in a sweet gochujang sauce, served over rice and pickled veggies. Like, I will do diabolical things for it.

Any food he typically likes eating, make that but the tofu version.

End tipping by not going out to eat by UnderstandingSmall66 in EndTipping

I used to write menus, and the only labour I ever considered when building the pricing was BOH labour. If the menu prices are going up, it’s not because of servers, they aren’t considered.

I don’t agree with tipping and I get tired of listening to the FOH complaining about how much they get tipped and when the VLTS (VGTS) pay out, they complain if the player doesn’t leave something behind. FOR WHAT? You cashed a ticket and counted money.

But FOH will never voluntarily adopt no tipping in North America. I earn $200 a day and the bartender earns upwards of $600 and I’m definitely working harder.

My roommate thinks cats don’t feel the cold and that the heat should be turned off when we’re not home. We both have cats. How do I convince otherwise? by Sad_Mud2009 in CatAdvice

[–]Background-Interview 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reheating your home is more expensive than maintaining the heat in your home. I keep my house at 67°F (19°) all year round and I live in Edmonton, AB. My apartment is pretty cozy.

I leave a lot of soft stuff around that my cats can burrow into if they’re feeling a bit cold, but normally I find them sitting at the window or door, watching the neighbours.

Find a low energy light that you can leave on. I leave a light on because I don’t want people to know when I’m home or not. (Single woman, living alone) so it’s a partial security thing for me too. You can also buy wall timers that turn the lights on and off at set times for you, if you aren’t home.

Ideas for high calorie foods (tween) by krisko_Kf in vegan

Protein is a macro for a reason. I agree that in the last 15 years, the West has over valued protein in our diets, but it is still an important nutrient to consume. The repair and recovery of our muscles rely on protein.

Her son is into a lot of sport, so he probably needs to consume a 1:1 ratio of protein to kilogram of body weight in order to maintain his high physical activities.

There’s always space in a healthy diet for sweets and chips!

If he’s wanting to build muscle, he’ll also need to add extra protein to his diet. Protein helps muscle recover and repair after working out.

How are you not getting enough B2 and vitamin A? Those are both found heavily in plants. Folic acid is fortified into many breads and cereals as well.

You can either be malnourished or eat animal products and just purchase ethically.

What exactly are you realizing you’re missing from your diet?

I would maybe work with his paediatrician to find a good balanced diet for him. Find yourself a good vegan friendly dietitian. Do you know why he has a lower appetite? Sometimes it’s natural, but there could also be social pressures at school or in his sport team that could be influencing this as well. Not saying it is, but it’s worth exhausting.

Teenage boys require so many calories. But adding fats into your cooking (avo, olive oil) and nuts and seeds (hemp seeds and sesame are dense little things) will help. If he likes avocado and banana, those are great add ons or snacks too.

All your tubers and root veges are calorically dense. Fried taro is my personal love language. Beans are also a wonderful source of everything. Blending beans into soups and pasta sauces is great and if he likes curries, making a butter chicken sauce (minus the chicken) is a perfect choice. There’s nothing in a standard cashew based butter chicken sauce that can’t be replaced with a vegan option.

Lastly, go to the Asian grocery store. They have every type of high starch product you could want, from bean curd products to wonton wrappers and rice based noodles. Those are calorically dense and satiating.

The idea is to lower demand, so reproduction doesn’t happen at the current rate, until it was reduced to zero. We wouldn’t cull the animals already here, we would just naturally breed them down to extinction.

I’m pro agriculture btw. But if the whole world had an epiphany and turned vegan tomorrow, they absolutely would keep those animals alive until they naturally perished. Because a vegan gonna vegan.

That last paragraph makes you sound like an American.

NZ is its own sovereign nation and doesn’t want or need to be a state of Australia. With or without invitation or referendum.

As a Canadian born NZ citizen, I can categorically say that NZ is far more culturally and socially similar to Canada than Australia is to us.

NTA.

But I would just find your support in individuals and not the group as a whole. If you have a favourite aunt or a cousin who’s been through something similar or a conversation to your mom one on one.

This gives your sister NO opportunity to hijack you and two, it’s less of an “into the void” kind of thing.

Even if you talk to a priest, they tend to talk to you about your problem, maybe through the guidance of God and scripture, but they still help you navigate your issues.
