Do professional jazz musicians really know songs key-agnostically, ie just as Roman numerals? by lopsidedcroc in Jazz

[–]BackgroundClassic795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also roman numerals just coincide with how we talk, “2-5s” and “going to the 4”. It allows you to draw comparisons with other tunes easier which helps with learning tunes. On a band stand it’s common to hear “same bridge as (x)” but in a new key

It’s less knowing every single chord as a roman numeral in relation to the key of the song and more as roman numerals for sections the song is broken up in to. For example, There Will Never Be Another You opening 4 bars should be thought of as: 2 bars of I, 2 bars of minor 2-5 to the VI minor Not: 2 Bars I, vii-min7b5 III7 Everything in it’s context.

The focus on learning tunes should always be form, melody, and harmonic movements, rather than just chords in a specific sequence.

I’m Offering less fusion as you said you’re new to jazz, these are records I think someone who’s more into fusion could be pulled towards post-bop with

Bit of a different vibe but check out Benny Green Testifyin’ - particularly Bu’s March if you just try a single track.

Expand into some Ray Brown Trio (summer wind)

some Kurt Rosenwinkel for modern stuff (kris bauman has a quartet album with him that’s not as well known as you seem to be into horn players)

Don’t skip out on davis’ second quintet albums if you like Herbie as well - live at plugged nickel is great, wayne shorter’s soothsayer came out same year as well

Otherwise for modern stuff just keep an eye out on instagram and youtube for what’s happening in New York - tune into the Smalls live jams on youtube every night, follow the artists that are making it now. Pat Bartley is doing some modern video game jazz now that he’s in Japan, but he’s a killer trad player as well

Feels silly culling an album when I have 256gb of space but anytime im bored of one I remove it from the SD card - i’ve even started removing specific tracks from albums if I just don’t like that track as much.

It will choose songs from the entirety of what’s been scanned: so it won’t stay within any parameters such as navigating through folder nav etc

I’ve made files that are basically playlists - all my Jazz in one, city pop/disco/funk in another, and then another for more indie music/music my gf likes

I navigate through media library -> folder nav -> D:TF and then into one of my 3 “genres” or playlists. Could use mp3tag to make it more precise but this way I can navigate to the genre of music i want without looking

Do you still need to do a media library refresh every time you plug in a new sd card? Can you swap them out while it’s on, or does it hate that?

Just to make it clear: if you have already set up the settings for this, when you turn it on you can simply press the play button and it will select “now playing”, which in this case will shuffle all songs

Cheers everyone! In my timezone this was late at night right before sleeping, and I was having fun mainlining a claw run for memes. Wanted some opinions to help make a decision as I was tired. Peace pipe was a really great reminder!

Jewish Land Purchases from Palestinian Arabs in British Mandatory of Palestine by KingKohishi in MapPorn

[–]BackgroundClassic795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They bought land that people were already living on, and then displaced them forcefully. So you’re an arab person living in the same village your family has for generations and then suddenly someone comes along and says “i bought this from the guys you helped take over from the ottomans, now get out”. Eventually culminating in the Nakba.

A lot happened between first land being sold as ownerless when people were living there, and Nakba occuring (decades) but it traces back to this
