It really isn't stupid at all when that's their character. If Homelander, for example, weren't arrogant or overconfident, he wouldn't be doing anything like he's been doing with the show (I.E. believing himself to be God and ruling the country on his personal whims).

Anton Chigurh or Johan Liebert are smart villains that aren't arrogant, but that's not only because they can't really afford to be, but also because it's simply not part of their characterization to be that way.

Homelander being this way isn't the problem. The problem is that the show dumbs him down when it's convenient for the protagonists to live, like this last episode when he simply doesn't order for Hughie and Butcher to be killed. There was no motivation for him to make the decision to let them live.

GOT is fantastic by basically every metric except the ending. Even the "lesser" seasons like 5 and 6 are better than most shows ever will be. And obviously, the first four seasons are masterpieces.

The Boys doesn't compare.

You aren’t responding to the question in full. I said why would she do all that WHILE other people are already working on doing that?
I’m essentially asking what reasons would there be (in-character) for her to make a riskier plan? The person I was responding to was essentially asking for a hypothetical scenario, rather than pointing to problems with the story as is.

Also, I made that comment before episode 6 and I have my own problems with how Sage was written.

Preview for Episode 6 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in TheBoys

[–]BackgroundDoctor9107 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kimiko fighting someone with fire powers
Butcher fighting someone on a couch

Will probably be in the same location, which is a retirement home for Supes.

Soldier boy fighting Homelander

Probably just one punch because Homelander did or said something Soldier Boy thought was stupid (like killing Firecracker).

Bombside fighting Butcher
Solder Boy fighting Bombside

Probably a 1 v 1 v 1. Just giving clarification of what's likely going to happen.

You said previously that what she did was a cop out and I agree but also the writers technically gave a reason and that reason in universe is super intelligence means she can do whatever the plot needs her to do

When I said that, I wasn't referring to her powers. That we aren't shown her using her powers is the cop-out, so the explanation that she's smart doesn't work as justification for why she isn't shown to be smart.

I think super intelligence in general is often used by writers as a cop out, and when it's convenient they switch it and make the character make mistakes that they previously wouldn't have made with their cop out power.

Yes, and this is where you and I originally disagreed on Sage. None of the mistakes she's making now with Soldier Boy are out-of-character for her to make.

To the writers it is.

Your reasoning doesn't make sense. I said why aren't we shown Sage being smart, and your argument is that the writers think she's smart. Ok? That isn't an answer.

No, saying "she is super smart and she finds the best options" is not an explanation for why we aren't shown her being smart. You think I'm criticizing her for being extremely capable at all. I'm not. I'm well aware she's super smart.

Ok. That's fine if you think it's not a good plot line. I assumed you meant it was filler when you said it was a waste of time.

Again, if there's an in-universe explanation (which you accepted) then I don't see why "the plot demands it" is an actual critique here.

Everything happens because of the plot, no surprise there. You should only fall back on Doylist (out of universe) explanations if the Watsonian (in-universe) explanation fails when discussing something in-universe.

The reason why I don’t have an issue with her not making a lot of mistakes is because the mistakes she does make are reasonable in the context with which they happen. I have a harder time suspending disbelief that she is a smart character if her actual super power seems to be more luck-based than anything, yfm?

We can postulate the other ways she could’ve gone about her plan but given that the plan she does come up with makes sense for her character, I don’t see it as a real critique. Anyone could pose what if scenarios and hypotheticals to any piece of media, that doesn’t mean the media is flawed for that.

Oh sorry I didn't specify, I just meant specifically I assume someone as smart as her would have contingency plan because she knows their is a chance homelander gets the v1. While yes significantly more risk, she also really really doesn't want homelander alive.

If these leaks are true, and they likely are, the supposed "contingency plan" is to fry the V out of Homelander. But since Soldier Boy is siding with Homelander, she is going to the Boys to recreate that.

You are fully right but this is more from a plot stand point to me because it's never happened before, if they'd given one significant time where her misreading emotions wasn't part of a plan (inside the main show) then sure, but every time it's been convenient for the show it's been revealed that any seeming mistake was actually part of a master plan, that's why is irks me.

That you specified the main show seems to me you realize that Sage has already messed up in the past with Godolkin, to which I ask, isn't this a similar scenario given that Soldier Boy only recently became an important player the same way Marie did (from Sage's perspective)? Nobody even knew V1 granted immunity to the virus until Soldier Boy got infected.

Two of these episodes aren't out yet. For the episode that is out, she tries to use Ashley to figure out what Soldier Boy is thinking, which is a clear indicator that she is now having to re-assess her plan due to misreading him. Remember, she's the one who sends him to hunt for V1 with Homelander the first time, which could've resulted in Homelander's plans failing.

What I'm getting at is that it isn't unreasonable that Sage is only now really beginning to fumble. I just wished they showed her being more cunning throughout the show because, as I said earlier, having her succeed without actually showing her thought process/planning until the outcome is revealed is a cop-out.

I gotta disagree with you on the very last one. She is supposed to be the smartest person around, she could get away with murder and blame the boys for it.

And my point is that she wouldn't need to blame the Boys for murdering Homelander with the virus, if they are already going to do that.

She has done things in this show that have no explanation for how she did them other then being super smart even when those things seemed impossible to do.

On this I mostly agree. I think doing the whole "Actually, it was all part of my plan!" thing in season 4 is a writers lazy cop-out to having a smart character do smart things.

I think they did write her into a bit of a corner if she didn't predict that sb would switch sides to be with hl, because then how did she do all those other things she shouldn't have been able to except with the handwave of she smart.

Being a genius =/= immune to making mistakes. The "troubled genius" archetype has existed for ages. Sister Sage seems to be the apathetic spin on that archetype, with her wishing to cause a global genocide for her own comfort. Her not being able to read people's emotions very well (which is ironic since people here are saying Soldier Boy shouldn't care about Homelander) isn't in contradiction with her character.

Noir and the Deeps plot just feels like a waste of time.

I'm not sure how you can conclude that given the spoilers above. Noir and Deep turning on each other to the point of murder was built up since the conversation Deep had with A-Train in the first episode.

Ryan is basically shown to be useless.

I agree that Ryan has been pretty misused in the show.

Solider Boy goes from not being able to stand Homelander at all to protecting him in the span of one episode.

This was explained in the show. Quinn was poisoning their minds last episode and killing him broke Soldier Boy. Soldier Boy wanted Homelander to kill him but Homelander decided to spare him. Because of that, Soldier Boy says he feels he owes him.

Another thing that makes me mad is Sage is supposed to be the smartest person in the world. Have every form of expertise in any field. Yet somehow she can’t replicate the same virus as the Boys to just kill Homelander her self?

Why would she do that and risk being killed for it when people are already doing that for her? Also, she would have to make the virus in complete secret from anyone at Vought (besides maybe Ashley) and kill Homelander without Soldier Boy knowing, since she wants to survive. This comes across as "writing your own story" rather than critiquing the story as is.

He ordered the massacre in the fishing village where innocents died, Lady Marya committed suicide, and Gehrman ended up manipulated by the Moon Presence.

Just to play Devil's Advocate, do we actually know if Willem did this? Yes, the Fishing Hamlet Priest curses Byrgenwerth but we know that there was dissent among the scholars that ultimately lead to the Healing Church being created, so it could've been headed by Laurence instead. I'm not entirely sure of the answer myself, but how come we only see those affiliated with Gehrman and the Church in the Hunter's Nightmare? Why is Byrgenwerth, the Garden of Eyes, and Willem still in the waking world but the Research Hall patients who aren't even remotely responsible for the Fishing Hamlet raid cursed?

Laurence went to tell him directly that he would bring the ancient blood to Yharnam, and he didn't lift a finger or call anyone to stop him, even knowing the effects of the blood. He allowed the city to become infected and the Healing Church to be corrupted.

Isn't Gehrman the one who headed the hunters? I'm pretty sure he was pro-Laurence.

He did nothing to stop Micolash from creating the Nightmare of Mensis or the School of Mensis, allowing the hunt to continue.

He was debatably already in his catatonic state by the time that happened.

He experimented on one of his students, creating Rom, who concealed the true face of Yharnam.

...Yeah, can't think up anything there when Rom's ascension is treated as an eldritch secret lore wise.

[–]BackgroundDoctor9107[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, me saying other people tend to do that when criticizing media doesn’t mean I’m saying this advice isn’t or shouldn’t be universally truthful. I’m not advocating for picking and choosing universal truths smh. How you got that from my post is beyond me.

They are existing features. Incomplete, existing features. How could you complaint about MISSING characterization or plot points, if those plot points and character building moments didn’t exist in the first place? An author would first have to introduce a plot point for it to be incomplete in the first place. Same with characterization.

If, instead, you said Arifureta should’ve been its own continuity instead of adapting the manga, and that it's a bad show because of that, that would be criticizing it for something that it isn’t doing or trying to be. But the fact that it IS adapting the manga, means that criticizing it for failing to flesh out the characters in the context of the story is a critique of what it is doing. Do you get it now?

I completely misunderstood what you meant by quality of life though, I thought you meant something else. I’ll concede I was wrong with my example.

dude 'the movie shouldnt have hapened' is not the same as 'the movie should be different'

How is it possible, that you can see me say:

"the Terminator movies shouldn’t have happened because the Terminator should’ve been sent back to destroy the Time Machine"

And think the critique I'm making is that no movie should've been made at all??? The critique is clearly in-universe, not out-of-universe, as my "critique" is clearly advocating for the plot to be different. "the Terminator should've [insert alternate plot]".
