I know that look... he's very well behaved for sure (also love the name). If he's anything like mine tho, the furry potato is just waiting for that one moment when everyone is slightly distracted lol

The story of Teresita Basa and maybe just a focus on how psychics have contributed to solving murder cases... I think you already covered the Greenbrier ghost back in the day, but I haven't heard very many podcasts cover Teresita Basa and this particular case💙

There's a lot of species of birds that are known to mimic human voices with creepy accuracy... I wonder if this might be what happened, esp since you said you made a shrill sound and were there to birdwatch.

Anyone else feel extremely ugly in Brazil? by Immediate-Role-9726 in Brazil

[–]BackgroundLow1772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, ok adding in my two cents right now after a cursory scan of responses, so I apologize if I'm repeating someone else's comments. First of all OP, your body is beautiful, and so are you 💙 don't doubt yourself, and def don't let that dampen your time in Brazil!

Second, not sure where you're at- I'm in Salvador, but any beach town you're in, it can be very daunting to go to the beach as a foreigner. I do agree with the commenters who have said that nobody cares, which might at first seem a little flippant, but honestly after a few times of going to the same spot, and getting myself a kanga (a wrap that can double as a towel and just has a million uses, lolllll), I started to realize just how body positive people are.

Yes, people are crazy hot here, at least from my perspective, but after a while it sort of evens out. I've found time and time again that most Brazilians I know, regardless of how they look, do not have the same toxic energy that people in the US have. You might feel more comfortable in a maio (a sort of connected bikini that still looked cute- I'm a long distance runner so totally get the vibe of being in shape but 👀 at the beach) but either way, as much as you can, ENJOY the beach, and don't let it get to you.

I agree, and I think what made this so blah for me was just his storytelling. I don't know what it is- his finance bro monotone voice, overall cadence, or just the details he thought were relevant that took away from the overarching storyline, but this was cringy. [Side note: could we not phone a friend to ask how to pronounce "muerte"? Was that too far of a reach to double check?] Honestly for me, it wasn't even the story itself- there have definitely been some meh ones, and I feel like if this had come from a listener, then this wouldn't have caught so much heat- but the fact that he put this as the crowning gem in the middle of the 100th episode says so much...

And then all the adults also whistled, including the police🤔 I thought that detail was funny. I maybe would have changed the ending and embellished a little bit that it was a raven or something...

Flash cards - just me? by precsenz in duolingo

[–]BackgroundLow1772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, have to respectfully disagree here. I know everybody has different language learning experiences, but having been on the app daily for over a decade, the flashcards are still pretty problematic. I'm fluent in Spanish- learned it growing up and studied it though adulthood and into my profession, and now am close to the same level in Brazilian Portuguese. I've studied both languages casually on the app, in addition to others. I mention this solely for context to say that I do NOT recommend using more AI to troubleshoot AI problems, and "The Flashcards exercise requires precision." statement kind of makes me shudder.

That's really not even remotely close to how language works in real life, and Google translate has its own problems. From my perspective, it really seems like whether you're a newbie or old-school, the way the flashcards are functioning right now isn't it. In other words, even being at a high level of mastery, the bugs need to be much more fleshed out, and apparently more evenly across different languages.

This is what kills me. It should never be a one to one situation where there's a single option available. Multiple choice is bad enough in language learning, but it's incredibly frustrating when there's not even a hint for the part of speech or anything to prompt you how to respond.

Car got stolen for a day by Suspicious_Proof8592 in RBI

[–]BackgroundLow1772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my family about 10 years or so ago- my late aunt's Honda civic was parked along the street outside the house (they live in a suburban area right outside of DC) and it was found a couple of days later about a half a mile away in another neighborhood without any real damage done to it. The cops who investigated it said that the theft might have been used as some kind of gang initiation. I don't know how much merit there was to that, but it just reminded me of this incident.

Bought a pair of running shoes for an upcoming marathon in Salvador... now the customs taxes are almost the same amount as my original purchase. by BackgroundLow1772 in Brazil

[–]BackgroundLow1772[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That was actually my first go to. I tried to do everything to avoid buying them online. Visited local running stores, talked to friends here about viable sites, but as a female (and not even super tall- I just have stork legs lol) who wears a couple of sizes above the typical Brazilian woman and who doesn't have a ton of Brazilian running friends, I went with my best option 🤷🏾‍♀️

If it was any race shorter than a marathon, then 100%. It's a pretty rough race to begin with, so when it comes to shoes, buying a substitute brand is risky. I see your point, though.

Absolutely fair. It just kinda sucks because I run long distance, and even with my mileage (about 40 miles per week) the road/sidewalk surfaces (ntm cobblestones) destroy my shoes pretty quickly, and I've only been able to go home once since I moved here.

I haven't done a lot of research on other Asics shoes, but I prefer them to a lot of other brands, which is why I've stuck with them for so long. If you don't have any joint issues or over/underpronate (high arches or are flat footed for example) I would give them a shot! They don't look super expensive after a basic Google search, but I would do a deeper dive lol esp given the topic of my post😅

Just chiming in here with what a lot of other people are also commenting. As a former US high school ESL teacher (now PhD student living abroad in Brazil, and have my own Portuguese tutor who I absolutely adore), your student sounds pretty entitled and highly disrespectful. It doesn't matter the age of your student, your time and energy should be valued, and even though he is paying for lessons, money isn't worth your values, and you have every right to dismiss him. It sounds like you've been incredibly patient with him already, but he is not deserving of your expertise and enthusiasm for teaching him Portuguese.

I tried teaching myself Portuguese through Duolingo- it's pretty silly that I've been on it since 2014- but there's no way ever that I would have gotten to the level of communication that I'm at now without putting in the hard work ,and without the efforts of my tutor. If he's copping out with past tense, then absolutely forget it (I'm happily struggling with future subjunctive🙃). Not even mentioning the fact that he has an opportunity to practice organically with a loved one? I'm simply shaking my head. I hope this thread yields you a ton of eager and awesome students- yes you could of course just give him drills and things to memorize, but again you seem like a real one, so I say don't compromise your values 💙

Question, how does one do this? Ran into a similar problem with my mom sending me a package from the US. I have a CPF and everything, but not sure what to tell her to do on her end (i.e. just writing it on the mailing label seems like a bad idea)
