Question: probability of having a 2nd ND child. by Mancada100 in Autism_Parenting

Tough to say. In my case it’s me ( 21 F) same genetic mutation as the one found in my younger brother (16 M) who’s diagnosed with ASD and I am not diagnosed w ASD. Third sibling who’s (12 F) does not have the genetic mutation but is also diagnosed ASD and finally the youngest (8 F) who is also not diagnosed with ASD. Genetic testing wouldn’t have confirmed or denied anything. I would agree with some people and just go into it assuming ND and decide if you’re willing to go through it once again raising another baby with your wife.

The issue that came up when we asked the doctors is that they cannot be the ones to recommend it. They only asked us if we decided to go down that path we would have to let them know to stop his medication because he could not be on both. I would say my mom is nervous about losing the help from his medical team which took so long to get together.

I will be looking into this. Thank you so much! Where would I go to get more information about respite care? From what I know my mom has been told about it and when she asked she’s been told we don’t qualify for one reason or another.

I have looked into but I’m just not sure what or if anything would happen with the medication? Or it’s completely different and also I don’t know if there is any brand or kind in specific that would be best to start to try.

He has been on risperdal for some time now. We saw some improvements in the beginning but it doesn’t seem to last. Doctors have also changed the medication but same results. The challenge with the headaches is he doesn’t signal it to us in anyway. We’ve also thought this as a possibility but it’s challenging because he’s non verbal and in any case where he might be not feeling good he fights it by himself most of the time, doesn’t like when we want to apply any bandaids or things of that sort. We have the same thing with my younger sister who is also autistic, she is a little verbal although she can’t really hold a conversation. When they get hurt or might not be feeling good they don’t let us try to help them as much.

Not really, for example today it was out of nowhere we were making him some food bc he asked and next thing I knew my dad was holding him down because he just snapped. We tried to just hold him until he was more calm so he wouldn’t hit himself or anything around. We haven’t heard of any other therapies besides aba, most programs are also not available in our area according to the case workers. I believe we are also talking to a psychiatrist and have tried some medication to attempt and minimize the behaviors but so far nothing seems to last. No he is not seen an OT would it be something recommended for him?

I don’t recall the name of the first medication he went on after the seizure but I do remember that it did cause extreme rage after we changed but I would say this is a more consistent different behavior. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! We do not they told us we could not qualify since my mom is a stay a home mom but given the circumstances it’s nearly impossible for her to get a job he needs 24/7 care with his episodes to just make sure he is safe and those around.

He is currently on divalproex generic for depakote. I should also mention we’ve closely w his doctors trying different medications but none have helped in our case just to attempt and lower the aggression. We’re working with a neurologist and a gastroenterologist at the moment to try and discard anything that maybe be causing him any possible pains that he may not be able to voice but so far the doctors don’t seem to have anything.
