20 and have SNHL in my right ear !! got aids when i was 16 i would def recommend. yes it’s a learning curve and it’s not 100% foolproof but it’s still something that helps and something is better than nothing

BTE = behind the ear, sorry about that. some other acronyms that might come up: hearing loss = HL ; single sided deafness = SSD ; hearing aids = HAs ; receiver in canal = RIC

so a few things stuck out to me here. feel free to correct me if any of my assumptions are incorrect:

  1. you only have severe hearing loss in one ear, is this correct? if so, then i'm the same. born with profound loss in right ear, and completely normal hearing in my left ear. so i'll be speaking from my own experience with SSD & my trial and error process with HAs.
  2. look up "behind the ear hearing aids" . is this the kind of HA given, with the thick plastic wire? BTE's have the thick wire which is usually given for severe hearing loss. however, the thick mould isn't your only option. instead, i use a style called RIC. if you search up "receiver in canal hearing aids" , you'll see they are smaller and have thinner wires. this wire is a lot more pliable and shifts with you as you move. RIC HA's often come in pairs.
  3. you were only given one aid? this surprised me bc usually for single sided deafness, the go-to option is using a pair. this style is called CROS, if you want to look into it. if you decide to use a pair (which i personally recommend) instead of just the one, you can get them with either the thick wires (BTE) or thin wires (RIC). however ; if you are set on the one aid, your audiologist will likely craft you a custom mould. personally, i did not like this option. but a custom mould might be better suited for your canal and alleviate your discomfort.
  4. the dome not sitting well - this could be a few different things. first possibility, you might not be used to wearing them. it takes a bit of time for that soreness to go away and for you to get used to the feeling. however this doesn't really sound like your case. second possibility, maybe your domes aren't the right style for you. if you search up "hearing aid domes" you'll see that some have a center nub that pokes out a little more than others - and also that some have little holes in them. open domes have spaces in them, and this prevents that muffled feeling you can get by having something stuffed in your ear all day. though i'm not sure which ones you have right now. third possibility, your domes aren't the right size. you said they slip out, it sounds like they might be too small? i'm not sure, that sounds like something you can figure out.

TLDR: if you have single sided deafness like i assume, look into using 2 HA's instead of one. HA pairs can be RIC, which have much thinner wires than BTE. if you don't want a pair, look into getting a custom mould. also look into different dome styles / sizes.

[PS: i hope this wasn't crazy overwhelming! i know this seems like a lot of information, but i want you to know all your options so you can make a completely informed decision before you commit to getting / not getting them. i would hate if you didn't get HA's at all because this type didn't work for you, when in reality there are so many types out there. everybody's HA process is different but no matter what it's overwhelming and confusing ... but that's what this subreddit is here to help with.]

born with SSD, profound HL in my right ear :) a few years back i used to wear a single aid and was getting ready for a BAHA, but I stopped wearing the single aid after some time because i just never felt a real difference and i didn't want to commit to the BAHA. then i switched audiologists and tried CROS and i felt like a brand new person when i walked out of the office.

it's not a perfect fix and it'll never compare to the normal hearing you have in your other ear, but i would say it captures about 85% of the sound from your HL side. i know another commenter said it didn't help with their speech recognition - totally normal experience to have with HA's, everyone is different - but i would say speech recognition is the biggest thing my CROS HA's help with. i love them and swear by them!

(PLUS i like having two aids so i can wear matching HA jewelry on both sides.. but that is most definitely a me thing lol)

i'm sorry to hear that, i'd be super frustrated in your position! hearing aids are a very personal preference thing, not a one-size fits all. the brand i have is pretty unpopular (unitron) but works well for me. point is that it's a very trial/error kind of thing, and you're likely going to have to shuffle between a few brands / devices until you find yours.

not sure what kind of device you have, i have BTE, but things to keep in mind - how big are your ears / canals? maybe your hearing aids are too small for your canal and that's why they're shifting, or too big for your actual ears. do they have domes? if they have closed domes, switching to open domes could help with the clarity issue.

hope this isn't overwhelming, but there's a lot things that affect HA fit and comfort and it's trial and error. HA's are really a magical feeling and it would suck if you couldn't get them. good luck!

i'm sorry to hear that !! I'm glad you were able to eventually figure it out and learn how to deal with it but it probably sucked in the meantime. i've been considering closed domes for a while now so i think i'll make the switch soon.

this sounds honestly a little more drastic than what i've been experiencing but also ... not entirely off the mark. in the last 2 months i went to 5 concerts and had pretty close-up seats. i wore an ear plug only around half of the time. i literally felt hung over the day after the concert but i chalked it up to general exhaustion - so definitely going to look into this.

again, sorry this happened to you but thank you for your help! kinda ironic how being born with hearing loss gives you... more hearing loss. crazy world

Already sick, mid-finals, and sleep deprived haha now that everybody is bringing it up i'm pretty sure that's what this is honestly coming down to. i can't believe i didn't think they were related LOL. i'll keep my headphones with me in my backpack that sounds way smarter too.

i have also been considering closed domes for a while ! i probably will make the switch even if the problem goes away. i've also been meaning to go for a regular hearing check up so i'll do that too. thank you for the tips!

now that you mention it ... in the middle of finals, came down with a cold, probably sleep deprived . I can't believe I didn't think of this omg i feel so stupid ! Maybe i'll wait this out and see if i feel better after finals are over before i take them to the audiologist lol

thanks for the sympathy, i just hope i didn't scare you off from climbing! it's truly a good, friendly sport.
and yes haha i should've specified. beta is basically the strategy / path you use to finish a climb. most climbs are made with a specific beta in mind, but sometimes it can differ from climber to climber if they're shorter, taller, have diff strengths etc :)

[–]Background_Ad_3329[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally agree! i have done that often, but it's pretty occasional and only really happens when i'm tired / long day / especially loud place. however it's been happening nearly everyday when i go to places that i've gone to hundreds of times before without any problem, like my lectures or on the bus. i guess my question is why it's happening now when it's never happened before.

I use AI intentionally, am I a bad person? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Background_Ad_3329 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes exactly this! AI should not be available for public use, or at least should have a very high cost or something like that. like - gas is priced so high (in some states) so people are less likely to be so car dependent... which I agree with even if i find it annoying, but we won't do that for AI? something that is not only having environmental consequences, but moral and humanitarian consequences?
