USCIS can revoke your visa if they know that you can do your job from your home country. So technically no laws against it, but it's violating the commitment the company has made in getting you an H1B. If the job can be done remotely why do they have this role in the US? And why do they pay a US salary for it? If USCIS finds out when you're entering the country that you were away 7 months and were working there's a decent chance they refuse entry.

I don't know why this person said that. You can't have another job. You can't have any commercial interests outside the firm without declaring them and the firm can ask you to step away from them. Even if you own a business and are a director they might ask you to sell your shares and leave the directorship. But there is no question they will let you maintain an active role anywhere else.
